This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What should Lords of Olympus' Art look like?

What should the artwork on Lords of Olympus be like?  New comic-book style art? Classic sci/fantasy art? Clash of the Titans stuff? Trippy 70s art? Anime? Or should we use commons art depicting classical portraits of Greek Myth?

Spontaneously I'd prefer illustrations that are based on Greek religious art. I wouldn't be jaded if it was revisited with a modern eye...

But no manga style please. I don't think Lords of Olympus is meant to look like Saint Seya rpg. Yikes.

It should match the style of the gameplay you are trying to drive.  If the game is supposed to be fun and fast the artwork should mirror that.  Grim and brutal - mirror that etc....  Good artwork in a game should help support the feeling of the game not just be there because hey, cool pic.

As long as the art doesnt come from to many different sources and fits the themes your trying to present go with whatever is affordable and cool.

This.

I agree that the art should have uniformity of style.

My main suggestion is that the illustrations should be ones useful to show the players - in this case the portraits of the NPC gods are probably going to be a priority, and legendary beasts, etc. But also items from olympian life, even mundane ones, but also mystically important locations and items - what might a means of scrying look like, implements used in sorcery, etc. And try to keep the illustrations relevant to the nearby text, rather than "Floating." One of my persistent irritations is when RPG art almost entirely shows ersatz PC types "in action" - showing the precise subset of characters and scenes actual players are guaranteed never to encounter or need to see.

Stylistically my fond hope lies for the trippy 70's...I'd love to see crazy post-Kirby Olympians. But it's hard to go wrong with a classical/hellenic style, either.

Yes, it is my hope that there'll be a character portrait for each of the Gods (at least those that have discernible bodies as such, anyways).

And illustrations for at least some of the monsters and areas.

So yes, I really hope that the illustrations in the book are made to be practical!

Don't know where else to write this, so...
I'm so going to buy this game! This, and Lords of Gossamer and Shadow.

Now, replace "acting" with "roleplaying". Still true.

I'd like to see art in 80's style mixed with what one could see in the Hellas RPG.

That doesn't matter, Pundit!
Whether 2011 or 2012 or even later -- I'll buy it. Everything Amber deserves credit, and your take on it sounds simply awesome.

No computer generated.
No comic book / manga.

"Emotionally Evocative" would be my suggestion.   Each image should showcase the god or monster in its passion.  Images of places should show the oppulence and beauty of Olympus and Mythic Greece, the strangeness and danger of Hades, etc.

I'd love paintings instead of drawings in a big glossy hardback.  But now we are talking a 10k art budget.
