This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Trapping Amberites!

So, I was just curious if any of you or your players have ever come up with great ways to trap Amberites in a shadow or prison they can't escape? Obviously it's hard, some characters can shapeshift, others have Trump mastery, although poking the eyes out can work in most cases...what do you guys think?

Those using Pattern mostly need to be able to walk/ move freely.  Chaining people up is a good start.  Logrus, if I recall correctly, could get around this, leading to...

Preventing them from using their senses/ cognitive abilities.  Blinding is one option, but drugging should work fine too, and hopefully prevent some other abilities coming into play.

That just leaves the Trump to deal with.  You ideally want it to be near impossible for the person's allies to contact them or see them.  Sticking them somewhere on the other side of the polarity (eg, in Chaos if you're hiding them from Amber) seems a good start.

That said, no one in the series ever stays trapped.  It's probably a good idea to have a plan for how to deal with them if they get free, or make sure your plans don't rely on them staying imprisoned forever.

To use pattern you have to be able to do the following: Walk, see, and think. If you keep an amberite from doing any of those three, they're fucked for Pattern.

Trump depends on you having Trumps to use (or being able to make them), and its already been established that you can create trump proof cells, or put someone in a shadow so far away that a regular person won't be able to reach them by trump.

Logrus and shapeshifting are considerably trickier. I guess it depends whether you need the PC to be conscious while trapped or not. If not, you can always do what was done to Jasra, a spell to freeze them.

The easiest method that comes to mind, at least as a GM, is to create a power that exists only in a particular location but is strong against the other powers and use that to hold someone.  As a player, perhaps not so easily.

As a PC I once trapped several people at different times in a "locked room" prison that blocked all powers (save contact from a specific Trump card) much like the blue crystal cave, only it was a spacious and luxurious apartment.  They got deposited there by Trump trap.

It also came with a big ticking clock and some way (psychically?) of making the prisoner know "time is passing..." in a manner guaranteed to frustrate anyone with Important Things To Do.  The knowledge that "time is passing..." was always tickling away at the back of their mind....

It's a bit of a strange question. Both Merlin and Corwin (and others) were trapped several times using different methods - blinding, imprisonment in a dark place, trapped in a power resistent cave, dosed with hallucinagenic drugs, chained up in a remote shadow - it seems like one of the easiest things to do if you so desire.

The clock is a nice touch.
