This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Throne Wars: How many of you have done them?

I have, quite a few, but I'm wondering how popular these are.

Just the one , and we actually didn't finish it (three of us had to dash to make it to a LARP session). But they're cool.

My group prefers cooperative role playing to competitive, so it's hard to convince them to really get cut-throat enough to play a decent Throne War.

I did a one shot Throne War (sort of) as my introduction to running Amber on a camping trip.  The five players had all played Amber before, some of them many, many times.

Each player ran as one of the elders (with one playing a returning Osric), only I forbade them from being Corwin, Benedict, Fiona, Gerard, or Random.  Random got offed in the first minutes under cover of the lights going out, and all hell broke loose from there.

The only survivors were Caine, Flora, Bleys (all PCs), and Llewella (who ran off with the Jewel).  It was very, very bloody.  And a lot of fun!

I may be starting a game with seven players, three of whom have never played Amber.  A throne war may be a nice way to start things off to introduce them to the system, then restart with an actual campaign.

ChaosDrgn

Since the books came out I've done 6 Throne Wars, most of them on the Amber side of things.

The one I was doing just before I was forced to move was a Chaos one involving Finndo (ok, so mildly Amber). From the author who shall not be named take on things I had House Bariman still in existence in the Courts, though very much out of favor when Finndo and Osric returned (the mother was Chaosian in my notes). Finndo was able to marry into another family, and arranged for some of his children to marry well, strengthening the house. After the Patternfall war (a mild disgrace for him since he helped engineer some of it) he decided to let whoever was strong enough to lead the house to do so provided two rules. No outright assisinations and nothing that would bring harm to Chaos, it should only be taken care of inside the house.

Croaker

I did... I dunno... About 3 of them, I guess.

All were great fun, but, being PBEM...
- About half the players dissapeared before game even began, some of them without having even done a character
- The rest slowly was took appart by RL concerns, until I was down to 2 players, 3 at most.

I like to think there is a little bit of "Throne War" in every Amber game. ;)

Without a doubt.  Every one of my games has had at least an aspect of being a throne war, which may say more about my players (and friends) than I'd like to admit.  My games are player driven, by and large, what they choose to do is more important than whatever plots I might have worked out for them.  And usually a few of them go gunning for the spiffy hat.

In any of my games to be sure.

I did one throne war. It was quite fun. We stayed up all night one weekend and talked amongst each other making plans. I ended up leaving for work the next day and nothing came about. It was still very interesting and fun to do.
