This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The Corwin Pattern

Quote from: RPGPundit;129932How many of you have set a campaign there?

What was it like? Did it have shadows?
Was the "pattern" power the same in how it worked as with the regular power?
Was it possible to travel from there to the Courts of Chaos?
To Amber?

What kind of world was it like?
What kind of shadows were found there, and how did they differ from the Amber shadows?

RPGPundit

If I may add a few questions:

Are the shadows of Corwin's pattern connected with Ygg?

Does Corwin's pattern universe have primal planes of its own?

Some argue that Corwin's pattern is closer to Chaos than Amber because Corwin drew it close to the Courts. Is that true in your eyes? After all when Amber was created there was no such thing as far away from Chaos either.

First and last tie: As I recall, Ygg was there to mark the middle, the end of the "influence zone" of Amber and Chaos. I find this very significant, because if we take Amber as pure order and Chaos as... well, chaos, and given that Corwin's Pattern didn't have to force order into nothingness like Dworkin's had to do, then maybe things are not as orderly down there. As for Ygg, I don't know. He now signals the place of the Pattern, yes, and so stands in the Primal Plane of that universe, but I really don't see him as that significant. Of course, he could be, and his shadows could be connected with "places of power" in that universe... possibilities are endless. Great premise, Schattenstrum.

Not Ygg, Ygg II, it wasn't the original tree; it was a sapling Corwin moved and replanted.

I think the tree grown from Ygg's staff was called Drasil (thus completing the reference.)

Sudden thought.
If the Blood of Amber can erase/damage the Original Pattern made from the Blood of Dworkin...
and the Pattern of Corwin was made through will and not blood... what thoughts on erasing/damaging it might anyone have?

Having a depressive or suicidal descendant of corwin walk it? If such a thing is at all possible for amberites ;)

I've set several campaigns there, with different settings.
One of my favorite had the pattern there and the realm around it operating as the connection point between the regular pattern's realms and Corwin's, a little as if two galaxies had collided, offset a ways.  I had some plans for localized interference patterns, but the trick was that they both related to the Courts the same way.

For the rest of the questions, well, I've tried them all different ways.  Interesting to play around with and try different notions.

I don't recall, but if it isn't, it should be from now on!

Really? Ok, it's easy to remember, but ain't it a bit simplistic? There are two other nice names for Yggdrassil (an. Yggdrasshíl):

Mimameid (an. Mímameiðr or Mjǫtvidr)
which means "Tree of Measurement (in context of Fate) or Tree of Mimi(r)

"What is the tree's name, spreading its boughs atop all lands?
Mimameid is its name, but noone knows its roots,
nor knows its falling, not felled will be by fire nor by iron."
- Song-Edda: Fjölsvinnsmál (Fjölswidsong), 19-20

,,With his fruit start fire for sickened women,
drive out, it shall, what is within; this is its purpose to the people."
– Fjölsvinnsmál (Fjölswidsong) 22

,,What is the golden gleaming rooster's name, sitting in the talling tree?Widofnir is its name, and he sits, tempest-blazing, on the boughs of Mimameid; besetting with ghastly sorrow Surt and Sinmara."
– Fjölsvinnsmál (Fjölswidlied), 23-24

Lärad or Laerad (an. Læraðr)
which means "Cause of Mischief"

,,Heidrun is named the nanny goat,
standing on Allfather's hall
guzzling Lärad's branches;
the cellars fill with purest mead,
this booze is never ceasing.

Eikthrynir is named the stag,
standing on Allfather's hall
guzzling Lärad's branches;
and from its antlers
drips to Hwergelmir,
where all rivers flow from."

– Song-Edda: Grimnirsong, 25-26

"The goat named Heidrun stands atop Walhall and feeds on the leaves from the branches of the famed tree, named Lärad. But from its udder flows the mead, filling a capacious jar every day. It is so much, that all Einherjer have ample booze. [...] Even more prominence has the stag Eikthyrnir, standing atop Walhall, and feeding from the tree's branches. From its antlers drips excessively, trickling down to Hwergelmir. And from there the rivers flow."

– Prose-Edda: Gylfaginning, 39

How about one of those instead? :pundit:

I hereby propose to call him Charlie.

What? It's the sort of name Corwin would have liked.

digression abounds.

Those are kewl names for "seeds' or 'branches' of Ygg or Drasil.

IMC; Ygg has a network of agents and branches of itself in Shadow, reaching far into the two (three, four? however many now) primal areas of reality seeding neutrality and keeping Balance as best it can.

Agents of Balance / Knights of Neutrality, what eva ya wanna call 'em.
Most people call 'em elves or fae. (Not all, just the indoctrinated ones).
Woodland races tend to side with Ygg in it's efforts IMC, but there are others, even Amberites, IMC that have become Agents of Balance.

That's pretty cool. So, are there trees in every primal zone or just elves?

I see Ygg as a cross sentient being, though rooted only in those primal realms it has a seed or root, branch, whatever in.
Elves are like roaches, they mostly come out when the lights are off, and yes, they do tend to be in shadows where Ygg has power, being that (IMC) they as a primal race have made a pledge w/Ygg to ensure balance and the forest, and recycling... bla bla bla.
Dwarves on the other hand...

The universe is chaos. Made of maleable substance as are its denizens. The ability to shapeshift is inherent in this. They can shift the matter that they are composed of and even absorb other shadow matter. Amberite healing , growing back eyes and the like is a passive expression of the same power. They have the power to just grow back eyes if they wanted only they don't realise this. The Logrus effectively an attempt to render this complexity in Trump form. An impossible idea like an Esher print in 3d that you can look at for 2 minutes and see the statue of liberty in. The impossibility of it is what drives folks mad.
The form a person takes is determined by their trump. A trump is the definiton of order it brings order to chaos by defining it.
A pattern is an abstract trump of the universe. It creates shadows echos of its self like ripples through the chaos. A pattern initiate is really just a guy that can impose the order inherent in trump on the shadow matter they are currently in. Advanced pattern initiates can do with without the need for movement, which is primarily a distraction tool to free up the inherent control of matter that trump contains. An advanced Trump initiate has learnt the last of dworkin's lore and paid the price and can move through shadow at will (the Font is an aberative daft idea that we should ignore and blame on roger having a bad curry one night).
So with that in mind. Corwin's pattern is as second universal Trump and as such it will generate shadows. These will be available to one an all.
The universe is more like a Japanese Zen gravel garden with the patterns and logrus as big rocks with ripples coming out of them. The difference between the Logrus and the patterns is that he logrus rock is randomly ossilating and so its ripples look like chaos (in fact they are multi-source fractals but I digress).
