This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Tarot Trumps Redux!

Eh. I don't know. A little too cutesy-poo. I'd want something either more traditional, or more psychedelic.  Either way hers is right at that spot in the middle that satisfies neither option.

I'd rather have some late-70s early-80s professional Fantasy Artist (or someone who's style is equivalent to that), and who was ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH THE SERIES.
The massive problem that there is with 90% of the 10000+ Tarot Decks on the market today is that they're done with people of a certain artistic talent who essentially know NOTHING about Tarot; or know nothing about the particular theme they've chosen for their deck.
These are not things you can take someone without prior education but who happens to be an excellent artist and school them in it in a few months, nor can they become self-taught experts in that span of time (though many of them quickly come to believe they are, usually producing terrible decks as a result).

Of course, for an Amber deck, I really don't care about it being a good tarot deck; I want it to be good in terms of being about Amber; I want the cards to make sense and have a depth of symbolism from the novels. For that to happen, you'd need someone who was very familiar with the series.

There's nothing wrong about hiring an amateur that is familiar with Amber and Tarot, but I think that if you are going to spend a lot of money (and it'd be a lot) for a project like this, you might as well go for quality art too.

Now, Stephanie Pui Mun Law's work is definitely on the cute side of the scale (that includes Blue Rose and Changeling), but there is no denying that she is talented and evocative. I'm no Tarot expert, but I think that given proper instructions and explanations for each card, she could create an accurate Amber deck.

Isn't there an issue with the people here not having the rights to the IP, making it hard for one of us to convince her (legally) of anything of the sort?
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

I dunno if I'd agree that it's "cutesy-poo," but I think you may be right that her style isn't right for Amber. Hmmm.
