This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The GIT!

The Trumps and character descriptions are really falling in to place. This family sure has an interesting mix of characters.

Yep. I have to say I love Dane's descriptions of people! Reading it just makes me smile.

I would love to see Dane's description of Cybiline too ... it feels like there's an untold story there, especially considering that Oberon apparently likes to spoil his girls ;)

Okay so ... Whisp'ar is now the Warden of Remba, albeit the unwilling Warden :) . If Whisp'ar wishes to give up the postion then it will come up as vacant in the next in game Sanctum meeting.

The next thing is anyone making proposals for the Dukes. I am happy for you to 'create' your own NPCs here ie you can name Ferdinand of the Hosue of Burgundy and leter we can fill in who he is or I will do so. The houses are as listed although there are a few references to old PCs from previous cos I have yet to tidy up. Ignore these.

So the Dukal lists are incldued here. 2 roles are occupied, Duke of Scrolls and Duke of Mirrors (this is for plot reasons we can't replace them at this point but can in the next in game sanctum meeting). First we do proposals . Open votes by all wardens. then for remaining slots I will assign NPCs (possibly assisted by secret allies of those with High PI. If 2 PCs try to impose their own candidate secretly then the one with the higher PI wins but if the two PI scores are close enough the identity of hte proposer of the winner may become known)

We have one proposal so far.
Degion Proposes Dane as Duke of Thrones (captain of the Royal Guard).

Duke of Doors
Reports to the OverWarden
The Duke of Doors is Amber's Treasurer. They are responsible for the finances of the kingdom and run a department of bureaucrats that includes tax men, economic analysts and auditors. Now in Amber when members of the royal family can bring what ever they desire out of shadow the idea of being fiscally prudent is perhaps an oddity, however the kingdom and the city in particular is a real living and breathing place populated by people who live their lives and so the economy can not be ignored. The Duke of Doors also holds the key to the main Sanctum doors (a ritual position as other copies are widely available) and opens the doors before each Sanctum session. During the ritual observances they 'guard' the doors to prevent intruders (again a ritual position as there is usually a squad of Amber Royal guardsmen outside).

Duke of Arches
Reports to the Warden of the Pattern
Head of Amber's judiciary (in actual fact reports to the Warden of the Pattern who is the supreme judge) the Duke of Arches holds regular Court sessions in the Halls of Justice in the city and has a number of junior magistrates reporting to him that look after the more mundane cases. Only Royals are exempt from his jurisdiction and they would fall into the domain of the Warden of the Pattern. Interesting Amber does not have a jury system rather the judge hears both sides as presented by advocates and then makes a decision, a system that is not devoid of abuse and corruption. Death penalties are rare and exile is a far more usual sentence.
In Sanctum ritual they stand in the archway to the east of the sanctum and guard from invasion from that direction (chaos)

Duke of Scrolls
Reports to the Overwarden – currently position held by Caspar
Amber's Chamberlain they are the head of the Bureaucracy and manage the day to day running of the castle and the kingdom. The position is currently held by Caspar who has been in that role for nearly 400 years. The Duke of Scrolls (more often referred to as the Chamberlain in non-Sanctum situations) sits at the centre of a huge web of petty bureaucrats. He tend to know minute information about the most mundane of topics from the quantity of Bayle's red still nesting in the Royal cellar to the number of ships in harbour. His official sanctum role is to record proceedings which he does on velum scrolls which are stored in the castle library.

Duke of Stairs
Reports to the Warden of Storms
Admiral of Amber's Northern fleet the position is one of the few Dukedoms of interest to the royal line. Ships and trade are the life blood of Amber and the Admirals are key roles in the military and economic existence of the kingdom. The northern routes out of Amber lead to 3 of the 6 Golden Circle kingdoms, Thassa, Bergma and Kashfa. The total size of the navy at any one time numbers about 50 Ships of the line and numerous support vessels.
During Sanctum meetings the Duke of Stairs 'guards' the stairs that lead from the Sanctum floor up to the public balcony, unlike some of the other ritual positions there is a genuine need for a military presence as on the rare occasions where an open sanctum meeting (one in which the public are invited to attend, usually by invitation only) does take place the risk of attack from hidden assassins is real, albeit slight.

Duke of Cloisters
Reports to the Warden of Storms
Admiral of Amber's Western Fleet this position is largely analogous to that held by the Duke of Stairs. The western routes from Amber lead to the golden Circle kingdoms of Desault, Solat and Kalari. The size of the western fleet is kept to that of the northern fleet this is really a diplomatic exercise and each fleets are constantly at loggerheads with each other in an aim to increase their size, strength and power. Crews from each fleet have what could be regarded as a healthy rivalry with each other and the taverns of Amber are often mopping up broken tankards and chairs after this rivalry spills over. Of course the navies will all ways team up in a fight with a landlubber or a copper.
The Duke of Cloisters 'guards' the cloister area, beneath the public balcony. This area is occupied by the majority of the Masters who do not have specific ritual roles.

Duke of Thrones
Reports to the Warden of the East
As captain of the Royal Guard the Duke of thrones is one of the most important military figures in Amber. The Royal Guard make up a large proportion of the military force in Amber. Along with the City Guard, the Navies and the Rangers of Arden they are a well trained and well motivated group of warriors recruited from across shadow. In Amber the military rank system is simpler than on Shadow earth. Captain is therefore the highest active rank although a number of ceremonial titular ranks do exist. The detail of the rank system is given in the military section. The Royal Guard are garrisoned in the Castle in the eastern barracks.
In the Sanctum the Duke of Thrones is responsible for the personal protection of the king or the OverWarden in the king's absence. They stand in public view to the side of the Royal seat.

Duke of Pillars
Reports to the Warden of the East
Captain of Amber's City Guard, has a less glamorous role than the Duke of Thrones but with a lot more men and a far more diverse range of materiel. The City Guard are garrisoned in the City in Watch Towers but also have numerous Towers across the kingdom. They are the basis of Amber's ground troops and act as a police force as well. Details on the regiments and organisation are given in the military guide.
In the Sanctum the Duke of Pillars stands between the pillars to the north of the Sanctum which is where the Wardens congregate.

Duke of Staves
Reports to the Warden of Arden
Captain of the Rangers of Arden the Duke of Staves is another key member of Amber's military establishment. The Rangers guard the Forest of Arden, the main land route into Amber and are organised as a mounted skirmisher units. Great trackers and riders they view themselves as Amber's elite military force.
In the Sanctum the Duke carries a large oaken staff which is rapt on the flagstones to open and close the meeting and to call the meeting to order should debate break into bawling.

Duke of Mirrors
Reports to the Warden of Dreams – currently held by Molo of House Chantris
Currently held by Molo of the House of Chantris, who has been in the position for longer than anyone can recall, the Duke of Mirrors has an unusual remit in that they are responsible for matters arcane. Most usually granted to a noble with a proven record in occult matters it is one of the least political of the Sanctum roles. The Duke acts to interpret supernatural events for the crown and to protect the kingdom from these sorts of assault. Of course there are several members of the Royal family that are more suited to this position but the Duke of Mirrors has the advantage of always being about either in the library, or his tower in the eastern wing of the castle.

Galfor was wondering why he'd go to something as boring as a Sanctum meeting as well.  Eoghann is more than welcome to take his place.  While I have your attention, does anyone have a corkscrew handy?  I left mine back in my bedroom.

Said about a million times before: Arden for Eoghann!!! Arden for Eoghann!!!

MoinMoin! It's aliiiiiive!

I'm glad business is starting. I hope you'll love to hate Degion ;)

@JibbaJibba: so far, using MoinMoin, I'm always accessing articles through the Recent Changes page, which is fine when reacting to new entries. I wish there was something more like a table of content of all visible articles, just to be sure I haven't missed anything published. I suspect something like this exists and I'm just dumb and didn't find it.

Exactly! Thanks! Did you find it though help pages?

I hate that some pages' titles miss space characters. I can't find a feature to modify titles though. Anyone spotted this?
