This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So I hear Rite Publishing has a big announcement on Monday. I hear Jason Durall is the lead designer. And I hear the announcement will involve a logo that says "Compatible with ADRPG."

So that's interesting.

Thanlis

... oh. OK, I see the other thread now never mind.

If you heard about the project without knowing about the other thread, where did you hear about it? I'd be curious to find out what other places on the web might be discussing this, so if you have any links it would be appreciated....

It came up on RPG.Net today in an old thread about Diceless by Design.

Interesting that its a patronage project. I didn't see what your required amount of patronage needs to be to publish?

In any case, I'm sure that unless you're being totally unreasonable, you'll get it. Amber fans are nothing if not dedicated.

With Lords of Olympus, we've chosen to go the regular route for that reason, we know that there's going to be a shitload of people who will buy this game just for the system (and we're going to make sure the setting is kickass too).

Patronage Projects are what we do best. The only retail line we do is Pathfinder Rpg because its  the only one that is profitable (You will only sell 50-100 copies of  the PDF in the first 30 days, and 50 is more likely). Retail is a gamble.

From my experience over the last several years, I have found that we reach a higher quality with the patronage business model because we can create a Deluxe full-color product, and because we can always cover our costs, we are more likely to produce additional products in the same line because we only required 30-60 customers to hit goal in 60 days.

We will be posting more details about the project once the pitch is complete and   the promotional artwork is complete. I expect it will run $29.99 for standard patronage and $74.99 for senior patronage, which is the same as the Coliseum Morpheuon patronage project from Rite Publishing, and Less than Halls of the Mountain King patronage project by Wolfgang Baur's Open Design.

I foresee and uphill battle, since you have no established fanbase for you company (ala trust in the quality of your product), You won't legally be able to advertise you compatibility (ala I actually pay a reasonable percentage to have that right), there is precedent that amber fans don't buy additional product, because they have all they need in the core book (ala the financial failure of Phage Press), Plus we both have an additional competitor, there is already a non compatible diceless system in Noblis.

If anything though Noblis shows that you can have a successful diceless stand alone game.

Precis Intermedia doesn't have an established fanbase?
I don't mean any offense here; but before a couple of days ago I'd never even heard of you guys; while Precis is the award-winning publisher of Two-Fisted Tales, Coyote Trail, Gnomemurdered, Earth A.D.2, and like, a dozen other games.

This is the age of the retro-clone. Labyrinth Lord couldn't advertise compatibility to anything either,  but its doing well enough for itself.

I was a personal friend of Erick Wujcik, and that's never how he told me things went down. You are in fact the first person I've ever heard suggest that Phage didn't produce more Amber stuff because people wouldn't buy it.

Nobilis is garbage.

Yes, that at least is true. And Lords of Olympus will have the benefit of being a new game; in the sense of an all-new setting based on a highly-approachable concept. It is not trying in any way, shape, or form, to rip off the setting of Amber. It'll be interesting and worth buying in its own right.
And its going to be Open source.

So yeah, I think we'll do ok.

Phage Press was, by most standards in this industry, incredibly successful, and the only thing standing in the way of it being more successful was Erick's inability to publish more product due to a variety of reasons unrelated to finance or resources.

Amber Diceless Roleplaying sold very, very well, going through a few printings. Shadow Knight sold out its entire print run. Erick once told me that he'd considerably more than 25,000 copies of ADRP, and that was at least five years before he died. Not too bad for what is essentially a one-man effort.

By comparison, Spirit of the Century is one of the most successful indie games on the market, and Fred Hicks just announced that they've sold exactly 5219 copies, print and digital.

Yes, this was pretty much what he always told me about it. It wasn't about the game not selling, or that he thought sourcebooks couldn't sell. It was about his personal time and commitments.

Also, while we're on the topic of how Precis Intermedia apparently has "no established fanbase"; I should note that Precis has actually already published a diceless-rpg (not based on The original Diceless RPG, of course, but its own system), Active Exploits, which was a moderate success.

So not only is Precis a well-known company with an "established fanbase", its actually got experience publishing diceless RPGs.

Funny how increased chatter about new diceless RPGs gets me all pumped up to revive my Amber campaign again! We don't even have to have a new product, just discuss a new one! :D
