This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Erick's book?

A few months after he was diagnosed, Erick emailed me with the following comment:
QuoteI'm mainly thinking of doing a book, 'On Role-Playing,' to describe some of the strange experiments I've done over the years. If you can think of any you played in that are particularly memorable, that you'd like to write about, they'd be more than welcome.
I replied with some ideas, but he never got back to me, and before too long, it was too late.

I was thinking about him the other day and wondered if anyone knows what happened with this.

Nothing official that I know of, but it's something that Erick and I talked about once. For years I've been collecting quotes from Erick about gaming in general and Amber Diceless in specific. Sadly, with Erick's passing I semi-shelved the project becasue I had no written permission to publish. Also, since the collected information comes from direct communication, message boards (current and defunct), magazine interviews, and the like, I'm not sure if there is any easy way to gain such permission at this time.

The man obviously had a lot to say, and you get a fantastic sample of it with Amber. It would be incredible to have his wisdom distilled into a single book, his views on the game and the way it developed.

From an academic standpoint so long as you quote the sources they should be fine to print and since a text on Roleplaying would be quite academic in tone should be fine. An interesting take would be to take a few of the major topics of gaming and use them as chapter headings then take quotes from Erick and other sources, you coudl even reach out to a few current designers to get their opinions. Then you could compare and contrast different views. With some decent linking text and a little imagination it could be quite interesting.

Ah, but therein lies the problem. In the old days, when writing research papers I learned to have a stack of notecards where each quote would be cited by source. Sadly, with computers I've allowed this organization to be a lot more lax. While I have a general list of which sources were used, the information is arranged by topic instead of source, and I no longer know exactly which quotes came from which source.

This has taken me years to put together but (thanks to an earlier hard drive crash) most of my original notes are gone, unless I happen to have any old printouts in a notebook in the garage. Not holding my breath on this, however.

I would think that the advice in Amber and Shadow Knight pretty much IS this book already.

Wouldn't it be good if every post by Erick Wujcik in this forum regarding ADRPG will be put together and edited into a single PDF as a Q&A for everybody to refer to?

Those make lovely (if sad) reading but so many are parts of ongoing conversations that they might be somewhat difficult to follow out of context.

RPGPundit

Yeah, its a nice idea but it wouldn't work outside of context.
