This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Other Attributes?

Of course.

Just as you can be a great swordsman and a poor strategist. And suck as hell at lockpicking. And guns. And dogfighting with a plane. Save in Amber, of course ;)
Compared to this, someone being generally fit and an athlete don't bug me at all.

Thing is, to have a "realistic" amber seems to require more than 4 attributes, plus a skill system. Some are fine with this, some aren't, but no system is ever gonna please everyone :?

I wouldn't see the point in this "realistic" Amber you're talking about. Amber is realistic for a game where you basically play gods.  That is to say, its emulative.

I guess it depends on your definition of "realistic."

Computers and space ships might not have seemed "realistic" to people 300 years ago. But, these things were still possible within the bounds of reality (and these things may well have existed in other places beyond Earth, even at that time).

In the words of William Shakespeare:

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

I don't claim to know all about what is possible within reality. But I feel more comfortable with talking about what seems to contradict reality. And saying that you can't be good at chess without being good at sword fighting seems to contradict the reality that I know, and even what I'd conceive of the reality that Corwin describes.

And, in the words of Erick Wujcik, from the ADRPG (page 76, under the heading: "Love Your Character.")

You see, I love Sherlock Holmes. Yes, I know that his exploits fill the pages of fiction, and are not in the history books. In his time you had to read about Holmes under the by-line of Doyle, and not in the front page news.

That doesn't mean he doesn't exist somewhere, somehow, in some reality that we haven't yet found.

I can definitely resonate with that view as well. :)

But, going back to the question of "realistic vs emulative" ---there is also the question of what you mean by "emulative." Are we talking about emulating a hypothetical reality where Amber exists? Or are we talking about trying to emulate some specific narrative of Zelazny?

I have stated my views very clearly previously and am in agreement with Warp9.
Wujcik created a great game but RAW it is really about emulating his view of Amber. The strength of the system is that with very little tweaking it can be opened up to cope with every version of Amber (even the one in the books :) )
