Just like Highlander 2 & 3... I should have never seen them.
But I don't let it ruin my appreciation of the 1st movie.
On page 244 (HC) of the Bentencourt book, "To Rule In Amber", King Uthor 's signet is a Griffin. Was this used for any reason or was it just 'cause all the other mythical beasts were taken'?
I should not have read that book, the price was right, e-bay, home delivery, complete my collection...
Now mind you... I didn't HATE the 1st 2. I thought them... entertaining. I could see it as some storyline for a game scenario, but I'd do it better.
So I'm reading this 3rd book, and I'm comin' across all this WTF?!? as I keep interrupting my reading to go back a line and see if I missed something or just had read it wrong? I have so many issues with this 3rd book that I have to rant about it... but I will do it orderly, as the Pattern would like.
I found so many discrepancies that I started writing them down.
SO WHAT (besides "I hated the whole thing"), DID YOU HATE / DISAGREE WITH THE 3RD BOOK ESPECIALLY?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin
It's all there my friend.
Thanks Gunslinger, but the day I can't Shadow-walk to Winkpedia I'll give ya call
But to continue the RANT, here's my 1st list,
My Gripes About "To Rule In Amber"
CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM:
Bad Writing...
Oberon 'falling forever' forever x2 he says? no way to tell time he says...
Then once he's out, he gets slight hunger paings. I guess that would be one way, and stubble grown?, fingernails? no?
He drifted in greyish greyness forever x2, felt hunger pains, then was offered a sandwich later and says, "No Thanks"
THERE IS NO DESCRIPTION OF MEMORY RECALL IN ANYONE'S WALKING OF THE PATTERN.
THE TEST SEEMED ONE OF ONLY A PHYSICAL MEANS, WHERE WAS THE MENTAL STRAIN, AND BONDING EXPERIENCE?
CHAPTER 4
PROBLEM:
Misrepresentation of the Pattern?
The way it reads, the fight scene seems to go on over a rather LARGE section of the Pattern, I thought the Center....
How big IS the center of the Pattern???
During this fght, much blood was drawn, on the Pattern...did even a drop spill? does he even mention it or it's importance? NO
Dworkin was stabbed, in the foot, while standing on the Pattern.
Q:
How far across is the Pattern again? it's stated in one of the Zelazney books..
Bentencourt writes: that Oberon kicked the sword 20' to the end of the Pattern, so by this thought, it's 20' to the other side, how big is the center? Does he perceive it @ 50' across total? So how large of an area does it sound like they are fighting in to you?
Q:
If someone trumped to center of the Pattern, and they were not of Patter-blood, what would happen to them???
(Do I recall a reference somewhere in my memory? or was it a game?)
What about if they were of Chaos blood?
Was that it? do I remember Mandor standing in the center? Or was it a dream?
GRIPE:
Dworkin bound by strips of cloth from his shirt? DUMB (but I guess he had nothing else)
quote: Oberon says: "Everything I told you is True" too many times, he comes from such an untruthful lot.
GRIPE:
Drawing a Pattern based Trump on a Chaos Lady's back????? STUPID!
:wtfsign:
PAGE 135
Chapter 13,
Seems he forgot blood drifts up in the courts...
PAGE 101
Clue, or Mistake?
Aber says he sees 2 severed heads on display. "Mattus & Titus" - (NOT Titur or Conner, being that they are twins...)
Did this mean he was the traitor and sloppy, as he would know whom he betrayed... no-one else seems to catch it though, so it's porob. a written mistake rather than some easily caught slip.
CHAPTER 15
WOW, that's alot of stuff accomplished in 1 day, A LOT.
I have more,... but I'll write them when I have time to waste, please feel free to rant about whatever you want in the book, as that's what this thread if for...
Dude, you're talking about a book that was written by a B-quality writer against the EXPRESS WISHES of Roger Zelazny. The whole series was derivative uninspired pap. And you're bringing up specific concerns about it?
RPGPundit
At the Pundit says so shall it be.
I bought the first one got halfway through, then scolded myself for my crime why why why did I not obey my Inner Voice.
Absolute unmitigated crap. I mean the parallels with Highlander are so very exact. These books are to Amber what highlander 3 was to highlander 1 that is to say just a copy of the plot with no original ideas at all. I mean he can't even think of original names for his characters from chistsake
Yeah, that's what I gotta listen to...
I'm in a calm place now...
Thanks guys....
...sigh
It it may ease you further, I laughed when reading pundit's words, as I, too, find that he's perfectly right on this. Sadly :( If we were gonna have new amber books, they could at least have been great books...
Just to warn you ... stop at #3.
Book #4 is the first half of a story arc which was supposed to finish in #5, but the project has been killed and #5 probably will never be written. I hate cliffhangers, and it's even worse when the cliffhanger won't be resolved.
I'm just sayin'......
Thanks... I will stay far away from Chaos Lords waltzing on the Pattern, and blood on the Pattern that isn't even mentioned, man... everytime I think about it, and that suck-ass writing...
John Gregory... did you even read all the Amber novels? More than 1x???
It just looks like you got lazy with someone else's creation, hang your head in shame.
Back to the Star Trek for you... which by the way, I will never read.
I would have thought about the Zena one's, but your rep is bust:mad:
What??? Did betancourt commit 4 books?
Quote from: gabriel_ss4uJohn Gregory... did you even read all the Amber novels? More than 1x???
O_O
I had the exact same feeling while reading him, like "what is he saying??? This is sheer nonsence, he directly contradicts things zelazny clearly posed as facts, without any reason for it, just like if he hadn't read the novels"
It seems he was handed a sheet with the 9 princes (and princesses) names, characters, powers and relationship, told the amberites where disfunctionnal, and off we go!
He read too many of those "Corwin was lying" posts on the 'boards.
That doesn't even explain his folly...:banghead:
ha ha... but it's too sad for me to find humor.
