This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

LoO: Alternate Olympus-aware Worlds

So in Lords of Olympus, the people of some worlds (like Classical Earth) know that Olympus is a real place with real gods; while other worlds (like our own Modern Earth) do not. Its likely that there's more places in the multiverse that are like the second example than the first.

But I got to thinking, what would be some other interesting worlds (Earths or otherwise) where the people there are aware of the existence of Olympus and the Olympians? What would these places look like? How would they treat this knowledge? How would they relate to the Olympians? What would they see them as? Would they worship them? Fear them? Something else?

One possible world that comes to mind is a science fiction type one.  The Olympians might rule over a galactic empire.  The other species might regard them as a sort of Precursor species that was responsible for bringing life and technology to the galaxy.  These ancient super powerful beings would probably be worshiped by ordinary citizens but I could certainly see factions or cults devoted to researching every possible way to overthrow the Olympians.  The Olympians would probably need to make a few changes to the Laws of that Universe to protect themselves from high tech weapons.

I could see something loosely similar to the Stargate universe, where the Olympians are viewed as ultra-powerful aliens of some kind, and where there are other aliens that oppose them. The humans and other mundanes would, of course, be the pawns caught in the middle.

I could totally see a world in the style of the Traveller universe, a very advanced interstellar civilization, aware that the Olympians were significant in the creation of Life as We Know It; they might believe that the Olympians are long since vanished from the galaxy (if no one has bothered visiting there for a while, much less publically), but certain groups might think that they are still around in secret, or seek to contact them.

And yes, I've already played (in my last amber campaign) with the idea of powerful, well-informed (relatively speaking, by mortal standards) and well-equipped secret organizations dedicated to studying the immortals and potentially preparing themselves to deal with any threat the same might pose to the universe.

So the Olympians could basically take the place of the "Ancients"... huh, interesting idea.

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I really like it. Frickin brilliant.

Edit #2: Gotta do the "Lords of Asgard" supp brother... gotta! I'd buy it right now... please please please :D

Another world idea, one like Classical Earth, but the Fall of Troy was not the end of the Trojan War.  The Gods found other peoples and cities to fight on their behalf.  The war spread across the rest of the Earth leading to a collapse of Bronze Age civilizations.  The remains of humanity have returned to a nomadic life style but they still carry on war when ever they meet a group perceived to be siding with the wrong God.

Wow. Post-apocalyptic Antiquity.  That's pretty cool!

... that's..... damn, that's just awesome. To be honest, though, that sounds like a job for Runequest. I'm totally gonna think on that though.... a PA RQ game..... it's giving me a warm, tingly feeling.... I think I'm in love....

I am glad the idea has been well received.  Let me know if you ever make use of it.

New world, a world exists that contains a sub-universe.  This world is a mirror of Norse mythology.  The Norse gods are all powerful in this sub-universe, having all expected powers and knowledge.  The Olympians have recently traveled to this world.  Their Olympian magic permits them to challenge the Norse gods.  This taken as a sign of Ragnarok and the Norse gods decide to try and expel the Olympians.  Mortals in this world might be causalities of these godly conflicts, or they might do their best to supplicate either divine party to not fight it out.  The Olympian magic would be greater than the Norse magic because the Norse world is a sub-universe.  I think the part where things would get real interesting is what would the Norse gods do if they found out this was true.

This could be interesting; but the way Olympian magic I think it'd be difficult for the Norse gods to stand a chance.. unless they found allies.

Certainly with the Olympian magic the Olympians could just destroy or remake the entire world, but I don't think they would be motivated to do that right away.  Also, I feel the Norse gods thrive on overwhelming opposition.  I think they would find someone or something to help them out.

Yes, I think that last one would be the most interesting possibility.  For some reason it occurs to me that they might end up somehow figuring out how to contact or use the Primordials, that'd certainly change their odds...

I had not considered that, but that would certainly turn the tables and make for a much more even fight.

Yes, though the question would be why would the primordials want to help?
