Hello everyone,

I have tricky question about the titles within amber royal family and I was wondering how the GM of this board handled it.

Oberon is no more and random was crown King.

What about his brothers and sisters prince titles? Do they forfeit it as they are no longer descendant of the king?

Usually the players play sons of amberite of Random generation. What about them ? Du you simply use Lord and Lady as I read it on some novel (Merlin, Lord of Amber and prince of Chaos) ?

How did you deal with that ?

From what I know of my royal etiquette, they're still Princes and Princesses even if their brother is King. Similarly, their children are still princess and princesses.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?

I think you are right.

I may be remembering incorrectly, but doesn't Merlin make a big deal about how he has a few titles, but that he's not technically a prince of Amber?

The princes are still princes. Just like prince andrew and prince edward in the uk.

The whole title thing in amber is confused. Random talks of getting awarded was it a regency or a dukedom, i forget. Obviously a regency makes no sense but a duke is lower rank than a prince.

I add a whole layer of nobilty and a parliament of sorts called The Sanctum that splits power up in amber and plays sides against each other so the king can stay in control also provides great roleplay opportunities.

Artifacts of Amber

I have all Random's generation still as Princes and Princesses.

The next generation are as well but seldom addressed that way but as Lords and ladies. Higher than other nobles but under the Princes and Princesses.

I also had Random be more progressive. He is no Oberon so almost all of his generation have official titles and duties. Some appreciate the gesture some resent it but still took it.  This was to give them all something to do and be invested in in Amber.

Just my Thoughts.

By way of obfuscation, here are the real-world Prince Philip's own titles:

  • His Royal Highness The Prince Philip
  • Duke of Edinburgh
  • Earl of Merioneth
  • Baron Greenwich
  • Royal Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter
  • Extra Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle
  • Grand Master and First and Principal Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
  • Member of the Order of Merit
  • Companion of the Order of Australia
  • Additional Member of the Order of New Zealand
  • Extra Companion of the Queen's Service Order
  • Royal Chief of the Order of Logohu
  • Extraordinary Companion of the Order of Canada
  • Extraordinary Commander of the Order of Military Merit
  • Canadian Forces Decoration
  • Lord of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council
  • Privy Councillor of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada
  • Personal Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty
  • Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom

When Random was offered a dukedom, regency, or a barony, he wasn't being demoted. Instead, he would have been adding another title and holdings to his existing status.

Yes, there isn't really a limit to the titles. Remember also that Prince/Princess is a prestige title more than an actual one, so a ducal title with actual land/property grand would be in a way higher (though not technically higher) than the regal title itself, especially past the heir apparent.

Aristocratic titles depend a great deal on which nation's system is being used.

In the british system, the sons of a King are Princes; the sons of his sons are also princes, but not the sons of his daughters.  Any further children past that point are not Princes.
(This explains, for example, why HRH Prince Edward the Duke of Kent, and his younger brother HRH Prince Michael of Kent, are both Princes, being Cousins to Queen Elizabeth and Grandsons of George V; but their children will not have that title).

On the other hand in some eastern european systems you had a situation where all children were born with their father's title and so you had a great number of impoverished Russian "Princes" who were ridiculously distant in the line of succession to the Russian Throne.
