I was actually thinking a better example might be Britain in one of its colonial wars, one of the ones that went badly.
Which adds another detail; I think the Courts are huge, utterly huge, and most of shadow past Ygg is seen as just a very boring excessively "stable" backwater.  Most chaosians can't get the idea of why their blood should be spilled trying to bother conquering that place; though of course they're terribly shocked when Amberites come over to the Courts and start kicking their asses.

I think as much as the first encounter in eons between the Courts and Amber was a shock to the Amberite royal family, it was much more of a shock to the Courts, the Amberites to them must seem extremely alien, possibly in a terrifying way.
