This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Google-The best place for amber DRPG?

So, in toying around with all the neat cloud stuff Google has, it seems that the way google drive and doc works could be a powerful way to play an online amber game. Creating multiple user edited Docs, allowing the player to make a copy and edit to give to the other players when they catch up, and potentially being able to keep a consistent narrative voice for future reading seems like it could work well and being able to create and share unlimited DOCs just seems great.
Side note-Merlin needed a tape recorder in the second set of books he retold his story so many times.
Thoughts?

I found a wiki with users able to set customisable permissions on pages and manage groups invisibly. I used MoinMoin as permission setting was easy.

It worked really well.

I managed to build a decent card reader and recorded the base background of hte game in simple HTML.

on top of that I tried using a chat server to enabel real time play but it was less sucessful owing to the difficulty of players not being able to make common time slots.

yeah that seems cool, I've done similar in the past. I think I really like the feel of working in a document that everyone is editing feels like writing collaborative fiction more which is why it's good for amber and bad for all those uptight RPG's with real rules and dice and crap. I'm a bit worried about retcon editing, but I play with my brothers, and, well I trust them like they were my brothers

I'm wary of engaging with something like google docs for Amber. What has defined Amber for me is the social aspect, and while on paper it seems it would relate well over the Internet, I still think the most important element would be lost.

Others say they've had a positive experience in this regard, but I just cannot buy it. This may be sacrilege to say on a forum, but - trying to interact with someone in a roleplaying game over the Internet just feels lonely.

Yeah, I don't know, I mostly feel the same way.  Of course, Amber did have one of the most successful MUSHes of all time (AmberMUSH), so clearly there are people who for a long time before google felt that the internet is an awesome place for amber roleplay.
