This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Trumps of objects...

Quote from: charis;348014I think they are using the -sketch- that Dworkin made on the wall in Corwin's cell. Then again, that was probably an actual Trump come to think of it, since he took the time to make it and it was still functioning until Corwin went and cleaned it up. Or I think he went back and cleaned it up laterwards...

What I mean to say is, although trumps are often referred to as "sketches," I don't recall anyone in the novels positing a functional difference between "trump sketches" and "trumps" of the sort that we get in the sourcebook.

Worse than that. Think about shapeshifters. I alway imagine that the Chaos deck shows everyone as demons .

Yes, it seems that trumps are keyed to psychic impressions of their subjects, which I think is posited as at least part of the reason why Corwin was unreachable by the trumps during his time on the Shadow Earth -- his amnesia interfered with the psychic signature on the cards. I suppose severe mental illness might possibly have a similar effect.

That's an interesting consideration. I'd never really thought about how if someone's persona was severely altered they might become unreachable via trump, but it does make some sense.

Of course, the potential for that to be used as a technique/weapon by Amberites in a campaign is fascinating...

I think the difference between a trump and a sketch is quite clear... in the Merlin saga when he trumps to the bar to meet the girl on shadow earth, the trump remains and then Fiona spys through the trump.  The sketch on the wall also remains in the dungeons of Amber, generally the trump travels as well.

Welcome to the site :)

but .... the trump remains with Fiona becuase they decided it would and the drawing ont eh wall of the dungeon is on the wall of the dungeon so ... unless he brings the whole wall through.

In the books there is no difference between a sketch and a trump but its a useful mechanical way of showign degrees of skill however ADPRG doesn't use partial powers so diffferentiating between levels of trump skill is moot.

This is interesting
Reaching out through Shadow, I found myself  another  blade.  With  its
tip,  I  traced  a  rectangle  in  the air, a bright circle at its center. I
reached into it with my will and desire. After a moment, I felt contact.

from The Shroudling and the Guisel.

It appears that Merlin can create a rudimentaty trump of Ghostwheel in a triffle with the tip of a sword blade... Now its not 'canon' but its a lot more canon than something we decide on a web forum :)

From looking at real artists the ability to catch a personality in a few strokes is a higher level skill than preparing a complex complete image.

Keep in mind that Ghostwheel is particularly easy to draw. I mean, its just a freaking circle!

Exactly! You can just trace around a coffee mug using a yellow highlighter.

I could totally see a 'Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind' sorta story, with Ghostwheel reaching across Shadow and influencing art and culture with the mental imprint of it's symbol... thusly making a percentage of beings in Shadow create his image in a broad range of artistic expressions. sorta like links in shadow. Ghostwheel's own awareness contact list, his cellular phonebook as it were,  I could imagine Ghost connecting with many out of Shadow for conversation and learning.
