This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Just What Does Having a "Fragment of the Pattern" do?

I would say that an item with this could replicate one of the basic pattern powers. Shadow walk, mould shadow, pattern lens, alter probability or provide a handy power source for magic. Of course it also is the antithesis of Chaos so you could have it deal increase damage or bind it into armour to provide increase defense. In short whatever you want it to do :)

I think the cannon line woudl be imbues it with a degree of reality and makes it imune to chaos effects whilst being able to extert an element of Pattern on Chaos ..or something like that.

I had level 8 and sometimes 16 powers from artifacts be dependant on Pattern/Logrus/Other imprint on an item or creature.

Like, Pattern would let you create an item with 8 and 16 points shadowalking, shadowmastery, Defense... but not shapeshift or Trump.

Logrus could only do level 8 shadowmastery, but could do level 8 shapeshift, and I allowed items with embedded logrus tenrils free and instant use of it (thus, no "summoning the logrus" thing").

You get the idea.

Anti-BS reply :)

The core of Amber DRPG involves rationalization and justification.  As a player or GM, we all play a sort of meta-game of plausibility.  Oddly, exacting detail isn't a requirement.

Wrong:

The bridge collapses behind me just after I cross it.  This kills some of my pursuers and prevents the rest from following.

Right:

Evading them, I run towards the bridge.  I think of the bridge's construction, years ago.  As I run, I consider the possibility of flaws in the structure.  Within these possibilities, a probability takes seed, grows, and is made real.  While I run across the bridge, I can feel its foundation shift. . . the floor is loose and unsteady.  I make it across just before one of the key supports gives way, causing a rumbling violent collapse.  Some of my would-be captures, fast at my heels, meet their end falling into the chasm below in the wake of the bridge going out.

Same holds true for a "fragment of the Pattern."  It is what it's rationalized to be, providing that rationalization makes some sort of sense within the general absurdity accepted within the game.  Part of this rationalization, however, must weigh the value of points.  An 8 or 16 point "fragment of the Pattern" item should feel like 8 or 16 points of power.  "Fragment of the Pattern" is the justification rather than a qualifier for free power.

Croaker

??? Isn't this what I said (Save for the logrus tendril extra power)?

Or were you refering to pundit and not to me?

Maybe I was rephrasing or slightly misunderstand your post, Croaker. :)  In a nutshell, a "fragment of the Pattern" item needs to be reasonable and justified within the context of the game and relative point value.

This is in respect to point-spent/permanent items.  I suppose that a temporary item used as a plot device could be out-of-whack: especially if used by an NPC baddie. ;)

Hey that is what I said too :)

You can make a "fragment of the pattern" do whatever you want so long as you have a compelling back story and possibly a hat of some type, something with a feather would be nice
