This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I don't know if its so much that, as it is just a way that Wick is showing how you can run his Houses of the Blooded game in an Amber-esque style.

I'm about 100% certain he's doing an Amber-like game with the Houses of the Blooded setting.

John is a big, big Amber fan.

RPGPundit

Well, there you go. And then there were three, I guess.

Jeez, I didn't think that my whole "in all but name game" thing would end up catching on this hugely.

You're giving yourself a bit too much credit... John has been talking about this for a long time.
In fact, I'd be surprised if Amber wasn't one of the many inspirations behind the ven of Houses of the Blooded (look at "the Curse", under the Sorcery chapter of HotB).

In fact, he's asking me to run an Amber game for him often so that he can play HIS Amber character...

People get excited about the same stuff all the time... It happens.

John was trying to get the rights to do something Amber-related from the Diceless by Design guys a year and a half ago. I helped put them into contact with one another, though nothing official came of it.

Steve (owner of Rite Publishing) and I were talking about doing an ADRP-compatible game from the beginning of March. It took about a month to get the license approved from Diceless by Design, and we'd resolved ourselves that if the license didn't happen, we'd make a compatible product without a license.

You first announced your product in mid-April.

Are you somehow claiming that your were so influential that you reached back through time to affect others?

I wasn't aware of that, about John Wick trying to get rights.

As for me, I started the vague outline work of what would become Lords of Olympus back in July of 2009.
You'll note it was at that time that I started the thread "An Amber-in-all-but-name Game"; long before any inspired-project came to pass.
Obviously, though I didn't declare it openly at the time, the thread was intended to gauge what the reaction would be in the Amber community to such a project before starting serious work on it.
I'll note that you yourself first posted in that thread in August 2009, quite some time before either you, Rite publishing, or Diceless by Design decided to do anything. By March 2010, I'd already secured a publisher and had gone from the outline/research stage into starting to write the actual book.

So yeah, I was the first one to put the zeitgeist into words, in fact.  Not to discount the possibility that the others weren't simultaneously feeling that zeitgeist.

There are many, many of us that ran Amberesque (Amber in all but name) games at home and in the various Ambercons since the mid-90's.  It's not new but it is cool that so many of them are percolating to the public now.  With Erick gone it may be the only way to expand on this game.

Yes. I think the big difference is that now there are three products in the works that are actually going to be (theoretically) PUBLISHED. At least one of these is past the "writing" stage and in post-production.

Did anybody hear something new on HotB: Blood & Shadow ?

Somewhere on John Wicks Blog I read about a demo / playtest of Blood & Shadows during the RinCon ....

http://wickedthought.livejournal.com/1051685.html

Really hoping for a release not to far away ^_^

Nihilistic Mind

It's one of many projects he has going on at the moment. I know that Blood & Shadow had to be moved down his list in favor of a couple of other projects, but we have discussed it from time to time.
He's got everything figured out except generation relationships and the rules associated with it.

Panjumanju

I always felt that Amber should have launched a kind of renaissance in diceless gaming, and had a million knock-offs the way so many other games have their imitators – or, "in the tradition of". It always surprised me that it didn't happen.

Can we now conclude that renaissance was just belated?
