This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Anyone familiar with this game?

I ask because a student of mine had a deck of "dixit" cards. She said that the game itself was kind of dumb, but that she liked the cards. I looked at the cards and though they were sort of strange but they reminded me of Trumps. Some are places, some are people, some are things like a dog wearing clothing and a monocle.

I'm not sure how valuable these are, but I thought they might be used as random Tumps in a wacky Amber game.

Here's a sample of some of the cards.

I haven't played it, but there's a Tabletop episode where they play it.  It looks kinda fun, in a party-game kind of way.

I've never heard of or seen Dixit.

If you want a game with some Trump-like cards there's Avalon Hill's old Magic Realm game. Cards with names such as "The Captain", "Druid", "Dwarf" etc.

I can't remember it's name, but back in the 80's a college buddy had a semi-RPG game that used cards. Based roughly on Call of C'thulhu a number of cards would be dealt out, some to the player, some to a sort-of-GM. Together they would weave a short story where the player wins by surviving. Some cards represented places such as "Old House" or "Living Room", others were of monsters such as "Ghoul" or "Zombie" while others were of items such as "Knife", "Pistol", "Chair" etc.
Very vague, I know. Wish I could remember more. We played it only a few times.

Dixit is originally a French game and I've played it here in France. It's actually quite cool once you get into it, in a sort of pick-up-and-play relaxing with friends sort of way. The world the cards invoke is sort of whimsical and fairy-tale-ish, quite pretty quite thought-provoking.

The idea is that you come up with a word or phrase, possibly a quotation, that tangentially describes your card on your turn, then everyone selects a card from their hand that they think might fit that phrase. You lay them all out and everyone guesses which one they think is the original inspiration. You get points, as the originator of the phrase, for everyone who picks your card, but ONLY so long as not everybody does. Then whoever else's card gets picked gets a point as well.

The trick is coming up with a few words that are evocative but not too specific, and then choosing the right card from your hand to fit with someone else's words. It's actually fun trying to negotiate that balance between too obvious and too obscure, and is much more fun the more references and turns of the imagination that people around the table have/don't have in common. With a creative group it can be pretty surprising.

Because of the amount of whimsy and obscurity of what's depicted, I think most games would benefit more from using a more "archetypal" deck, such as the very many types of Tarot available; though the Dixit deck could be fun for providing strange story elements in a fairy-tale-esque setting. Could come in useful for Changeling: The Lost (or maybe even more The Dreaming), but I'm not sure how useful it would be for Amber...

I like Dixit - a cool game to play whether you're sober or tipsy and just want to laugh with friends.

Fun fact: It apparently started as a tool to communicate with autistic children.

Never heard of the game until now.
Some of those are cool but I think that you could be better off with regular art cards.

The Everway Cards were great, if you can find them.
There was a Tarot deck for resolution of conflicts, and a lot of adventure cards for visual inspiration.

In my old Everway game I'd mixed the everway cards with a bunch of more sword & sorcery type fantasy art cards.  It worked well.
