This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Corwin's Animal?

So, the Pattern has the Unicorn. Chaos has the Dragon-serpent.

We see a couple of other animals too: Brand/Luke have the Phoenix.  Dalt has the lion.

So what would be Corwin's creature/animal/symbol, that would come to represent the mythology of his pattern the same way that the Unicorn represents the mythology of Oberon's?

I suppose I had taken it be the tree planted near his primal pattern.

RPGPundit

No, I don't think that's it.  Oberon had his tree of Ygg too, and that's not a symbol of the actual pattern.

It could be the Rose, I suppose, but while that's a fine personal symbol, I don't think its really a very cool "living entity" for the Pattern.

If I give it some thought, a black panther comes to mind.

A camel.

Hey, it's tireless, just as corwin! ;)

Quote from: Croaker;298831Hey, it's tireless, just as corwin! ;)

A lizard then, it regenerates, like Corwin...

It's got to be a little more inspiring than that. We know so little about Corwin's pattern that any choice for a supernatural mascot would pretty much make a statement. Now what statement would I like to make ? I'm not sure

Quote from: Trevelyan;298825Clearly a crow.

I read that as "clearly a cow," which is considerably less inspiring.

Anyhow, tt may be that the Unicorn and Serpent are simply associated with order and chaos respectively, in which case the Unicorn would be attached to both / neither of the patterns in a direct sense. Then again, perhaps there are other allegorical creatures wandering around, one of whom might offer his services to Corwin's pattern.

In THAT thought progression, it takes me to another steed, one with wings instead of a horn.
IMC Corwin's Avalon is interspersed w/ Valkyrie and Angels to battle the chaotic forces nearby.
(My 2nd character I created for the game, 1st after I read the books, was Gabriel... son of Corwin from an Angelic realm in his new Pattern zone called Avalon... his mother a celestial angel, and his siblings looking like a Nobilis line-up. Pegasus fits the idea for me)

Though I did see a nice painting, (I think by Rowena), of a winged black Unicorn... nice
I think that would be better.

The Crow seems like the best choice of the ones mentioned thus far.

Totally. Corwin's blood bird was a red crow, so it seems right. And the crow's a bad omen, just like Corwin.

Apparently in Scandinavian mythology Hugi (the crow who serves as Corwin's traveling companion / dinner in The Courts of Chaos) has a sibling bird named Munnin that might be well-suited to the job (the names mean Thought and Memory respectively). Interesting, in that they, along with the tree, might be establishing Corwin as a kind of Odin-figure, at least in his universe. He might do well to wear protective goggles…(especially since he has already lost his eyes once).

Croaker

I had this vision of Corwin's animal being a bat...

Where's the emoticon equivalent of a "ba-dum-ching?" :-P

Anyhow, I suppose the tricksy plot-jujitsu approach would be to make his animal a PC who is unaware of the fact.
