Title: Corwin as his Pattern's Oberon
Post by: RPGPundit on July 14, 2008, 10:59:45 PM
Corwin could be considered the Oberon of his new pattern.  Will he be up to the task? Will he make the same mistakes his father did?
What will his rule look like? Will he have the same iron grip over his family there as Oberon did for all those years? Will he be as manipulative?
If he isn't and doesn't, will that actually be a terrible mistake (a different sort of terrible mistake than that of Oberon's)?

Corwin as his pattern's Oberons? Pah! Corwin as his pattern's Dworkin? There's some story fodder!

But what would Corwin be like as a father to a dynasty? Looking at his experiences in both the original and the Merlin series, I think Corwin is likely to start out as the kind of father who thinks his own childhood sucked and wants to demonstrate that he has vastly superior parenting skills to his own father. Of course, Corwin has no practical experience of parenthood so far (getting pally with a grown child like Merlin is a very different kettle of fish to actually raising a kid) so he'll most likely mess it all up, just in a different way from Oberon.

I can see Corwin starting out as the kind of endulgent father who tries to be supportive of his children, wants to show them all the love and respect that he never got as a child. But at the same time, Corwin is still prone to sudden bursts of anger and morbidity, which is going to make his kids lives a living hell. A child of Corwins dynasty won't know whether his father is going to be loving and supportive, violently angry , or just self obsessed and disinterested in his offspring at any given moment. Angry outbursts are likely to be followed by one of the other two options in very short measure (either loving apologies of self flagellating isolation) leaving the kids even more confused.

Over time, Corwin is likely to settle down into some sort of stable parental role, but as he ages and tries to deal with the practicallities of a potentially murderous brood, all seeking to crry favour with daddy and make their own way at the expense of their siblings I can see Corwin finding a new understanding of Oberon's methods, and gradually adopting more and more of them himself.
