This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Attribute Power Levels?

i allways thought psyche being the superior attribute, through personal preference ofcourse, i have allways weaved my way through swordfights allowing my psyche to change the battlefield from swords to minds, and i usually win seeing i have rank1 psyche in most games i play.

And for the strength vs warfare thing, it all depends on how the players use their attributes, for example:

Strength PC lobs a table at warfare guy. im sorry but the only way warfare can help there is seeing this coming and dodging, but if it were an onslaught of tables (eg a large tavern used to sitting 100+) then eventually warfare guy could be struck and disarmed etc allowing strength guy to move in. thats how i allways play my strongest attribute, is by overwhelming them with it that they eventually have to fight on my terms.

dont know if that answers the question or not :P

Well strictly a thrown weapon of any size or shape is Warfare :)

When I play an Amberite I cheat. If I have a strong character then I might well have an item that can specifically increase gravity tenfold or a selection of power words that give me an in.
My longest runnign Character Hugo.. was weak reasonable at Warfare high Psyche and Amber Endurance. His edge was sorcery and a blade with very high warfare that could mould shadow reality to give me a combat advantage.
I would fight defensively whilst Severitus, my blade (which of course could also rack and use named and numbered spells), would shift reality adding a patch of oil or a loose railing before hitting my oponent with a blindness spell when I would strike.
I always thought Endurance was overrated. Mainly because Amber rank meant I could going for hours any way and I was generally so well prep'ed that any conflict would be over in 3 minutes if it wasn't then my sword generally teleported me out of there leaving some unpleasant devestation in our wake.

I hasten to add that as a GM I think Endurance is hte most important of all attributes :)

The only thing i use Endurance for is walking the pattern, thats about all its good for as a junior, however once you get more xp it comes in handy for simply doing some crazy things to other PC's :p also i still think psyche will be more powerful then other attributes, mainly because you can destroy the minds of some many people... and thats allways fun :D

Croaker

Quote from: Klaus;329298That has its own problem: W 100 vs W 10 and W 10 vs W 1 are both the same percentage difference, but the person with 100 Warfare will destroy the person with 10 Warfare, while 10 Warfare will take a while to kill 1 Warfare.
If you use ranks instead of points, this smooth on, in my experience, and these problems tend to dissapear.

As per the Amber rank, why not base things on C&A costs for attributes? I remember seeing some guys do this, and thought it seemed fine.
Say, Human is 1, Chaos is 2, Amber is 4, and every rank above Amber adds 1. Then, compare relative difference.
So, for exemple, someone 12 ranks above amber (16 points) would have a similar supremacy an amberite would have over a human (4x).

This can be tailored at will to have the Amber rank be more or less important: If we put human at 1, chaos at 5, Amber at 10, ranks at +1, even achieving over an Amberite the same sort of advantage Amberites have over Chaosites will be near to impossible for ranked characters.

This allow the GM and players to set the tone of their campain, and the importance of ranks, although this is something each GM already does more or less at random in every game.

If you don't like to use ranks, then, just say something like +1/10 points.

Yup, its about ranks, not points.

I like the theory that ranks rule, but when it comes to describing combat I have had characters point out that their character is both far better at combat than they are AND far smarter than they are.

The smart players (mostly girls, no offense ladies) usually resort to I have X Warfare (or Psyche or Strength), what do I know about how to deal with what is being done to me?

They tend to take their cues from me after they get a few combats under their skirts and use the combat descriptions provided in the book i.e. full defensive, full offensive, feint etc.

Many players want to play the numbers game - so i took their character sheets away from them. Descriptions not math became the rule. For those that are not so good at description I make suggestions with the phrasing, "Your character knows..." or "Your character feels..."

PC vs. PC is a little harder, but it is a learning situation for all. My Number Ones NEVER assume they are the best. It is just too dangerous when dealing with an unknown (I rank the PCs against the entire cast of the Amber-verse. Yeah, it is a lot of work, but it speeds play along nicely once it is done.)

Good hunting
