This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Amber Virgin?

In one of the previous thread chats entitled: Dworkin/Pattern/Unicorn and Suhuy/Logrus/Serpent started by Trevelyan - I enjoyed a great many comments and ideas, and stumbled upon a Q I'd like to ask the forum @ large...
How many time have you read each of the Amber series...
1, 2, and that other guys?

My A:
If Memory serves*, 5x for the 1st Chronicles of Amber (5book)
3 times for the Merlin Saga (other 5)
and as stated in previously referred to thread, 1x for the 1st 2 Bentencourt books.

I envy any of those guys so much for the time they spent w/RZ and managed to pick his brain, who ever they may be. Wujcik, Randall, & others.

So I have RZ's short stories;
Blue Horse, Dancing Mountains
Hall of Mirrors
Coming to a Cord
The Shroudling and the Guisel
and the
Prologue to Trumps Of Doom

What else is suggested Amber related reading

(I have Aces & Eights too)

So how many times has it been for you?
Are there any who have recently discovered Amber too, please feel free to write your thoughts on your 1st reading, (I'm in the category of, 'damn, I can't get to my other books 'cause I wanna read it again.')

I'd estimate it's around 65 times for the 1st Chronicles. I couldn't even guess at the others.

Hopefully you just forgot to add "The Salesman's Tale," if not, go pick up a copy of "Manna from Heaven," as soon as possible (it just went out of print).

Of course, I'd also recommend getting as many issues of Amberzine as humanly possible. You can still get Amberzine #12-15 over at //www.phagepress.com

I've read the first series 4 times in french, 3 times in english. Merlin series, twice in french, 3 times in english (almost, finishing Prince of Chaos now).

It was hell to find the books in France... They hardly had a complete collection at my school library... Eventually got to buying them and I would read them over and over.

The thing is, I don't necessarily read them in order anymore (unless I feel like going back to the Great Book of Amber), so I've probably read Guns of Avalon and Courts of Chaos way more time than all of the rest.

Oh and I've read the short stories a couple of times each. As hard as it is to find those, it's nowhere near as difficult as making sense of all the fiction written for the Legend of the Five Rings rpg/ccg. That's the advantage of having an RPG based on the available litterature, rather than the other way around ;)

Hey Erick, how many times did you have to replace your books throughout all of those readings? :D

I have to admit that my Great Book of Amber is looking very tattered... Is there a leather bound harcover of it?

Yes, I have it...
Don't have Manna, but it's on the list to get.

Salesman.... Yer gonna see my memory act up...

It wasn't in my document folder in html, and thought I had 'em all in there,... but it's on disc...
oh, it's in there now... good lookin'-out.

I actually have a few cd's burned of Amber web-pages saved from the mid 90's and since.
I haven't had time and a good enough system to actually go through all of it.

Sooo.... It doesn't seem there are too many people drop in here on the reg... eh?

I meant I have salesman,

Leather bound?
Seems to sound like something I may have seen drift through on e-bay.

Don't suppose anyone knows an Amber gaming group or person in Chicago with which I may get in contact with?
(Just reach with the Logrus and Grab you that book.)

Thanks for the welcome too guys.. I know one of these years I'll get to Ambercon..... That's not too much to ask out of life, is it?
(Any-one else here married?)
...sigh
on w/ the chat.

Well, let me see if I can remember...

I read the first Amber series for the first time in the early 80s.  I may have re-read them a few times as a teenager.  I have re-read them five or six times as an adult.  So let's say 8-10 for the first series.

The second series came out when I was in college, and I think I've read it maybe three times total.

I've re-read the Amber short stories four or five times, and felt the pangs of deep loss each time I finished them.

I have never read the Betancourt books, nor do I plan to.

I'm reading the 1st 5 books again. This makes #3. I've never finished the 2nd 5, nor read the Betencourt books. Chalk it up to the face that up until yesterday, I had to borrow the books or read them off a pdf. Fortunately I have rectified this situation and bought myself the Great Book of Amber. :D
