Hi all,
Reading the Visual Guide to Amber, which i consider to be canon as it was written in collaboration with Zelazny, i come to a hiatus that is bothering me:
{p.30} «[...] and here Oberon laid the body of Paulette in state [...]. Others have lain in state here as well : Eric, Caine, Deirdre, and Corwin.»
If i got no problem at all to understand when and why three of them was mourn there, i just don't get it for Deirdre... The only missing corpse mentioned next is Corwin's, delibarately. So, Deirdre's body is implicitely laid in state... What do i miss? I thought Brand had dragged her into the Abyss? How can her body be present at her funeral? Plus, the rulebook states she can be retrieved from the Underdark or Abyss thingie. I'm so lost...
I'm not sure you're going to get an answer. I don't have the visual guide, never have, and therefore don't use it. As far as I'm concerned I take the version from Corwin's Chronicles. Dierdre was pulled into the Abyss by Brand. I have a completely non-canon solution to what happens next...
I have the visual guide. It's a neat book, but there are several places where the guide contradicts something in the novels, and this is one of them. Everything that I have seen would indicate that Deirdre fell into the Abyss and was never seen again. Perhaps the note of "lain in state" is more symbolic than having an actual body there?
The visual guide is notoriously decried.
I don't think you can take it as more than a fancy.

My little joke to myself is that the Visual Guide is Neil Randall's campaign notes. :-)
Thanks to all of you. I could use a resume of the others contradictions you might have spoted.
