This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Thank you for a very informative review! I don't know when (or whether) I'll get into 5e, but it's interesting to learn about.
And we are here as on a darkling plain  ~ Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, ~ Where ignorant armies clash by night.

From what I've seen, WotC are going a decent job of presenting the different approaches you can take to running a D&D game. The problem is, a lot of people in the D&D community regard sandbox play as an advanced option. It's not. It can be learned by new DMs just as easily a scripted play. It does, however, involve a different skillset from scripted adventures - a skillset that has been neglected by publishers and forum wonks in the last 20 years.

I agree with this. My feeling is that the higher quality end of the OSR small-publishing movement is pretty much the only thing that kept this hobby from imploding in a white-hot flash of scripted-adventure suckitude.

To be fair, most GMs I know run non-scripted adventures and sandboxes. It's just that they don't use published products to do it. Healthy for the hobby, not so hot for the industry, if you see the distinction.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.
