This is my first attempt to start a play-by-post so hopefully I am doing this correctly. Looking to start a game for Servants of Gaius (which I am developing), a Roman mystery/investigation setting. Will give everyone a a file of the rules and character sheets. Plan on doing rolls by the honor system. Hope to make a 1/day post. Anyone interested feel free to post here or contact me via PM.
Because this is my first attempt I am limiting it 3-4 players for right now (just until I get the hang of how this works).
The basic premise of the campaign is the PCs are recruited into the Servants of Gaius, a secret order that protects the emperor and roots out an insidious threat against the empire called the Cult of Neptune. Characters can be from one of five classes: Senator, Equestrian, Plebian, Peregrini (non-romans/latins), and Slave.
I am interested.
:)
Invisible Castle works great for d.roll...
PS:
In reply to the recent PM...I have 2 versions of the Doc.
did not receive any with building diagrams or maps.
I am planning to run the playtest this coming weekend with the second version.
credit S.A.G.E. for playtesting.

Cool. Once we get one or two more we can start. Feel free to hash out character concepts in this thread.
S.A.G.E. Credited in latest doc (i will send that to you-tweaked the poisoning skill and a couple of weapons). No diagrams or maps yet. This is just the manuscript, our artist won't begin doing maps, borders, etc until December when the doc hoes to layout--we have an awesome logo though.
For this campaign we will be using maps based on Pomponius Mela's stuff (who was active in the period). These are a little different. Not a familiar map of the Roman world but pretty cool.
I'll join. :)
Cool. I will send you guys both the rules and Character sheets. The only sections that you really need to look at are the intro, character creation (more as a reference beyond the first few pages) and the equipment chapter. However I am happy to walk you through the basics as well.
Just sent you both emails with the manuscript and character sheet.
I want to join please Brendan. I am not posting very much at the moment due to my cluster headaches, but they will pass... I'm hoping at the very latest in the nest week, and then I will be back in better form. I REALLY wanna play SoG, but have not yet had the opportunity I'd hoped for over irc, so this would be a great. Please please :)

You can definitely join. I will send you the latest doc.
I was thinking we could give character creation a week if that works for everyone. So actual play would start on Monday the 7th.

Sounds good...will start hashing it out tonight as I read the new doc.!
:)
will post general idea here so we don't all make up similar PC's (highly unlikely but one never knows!).
I think I'm going to play a Senator. A lesser son of the Piso gens, maybe.
Quote from: Benoist;487521I think I'm going to play a Senator. A lesser son of the Piso gens, maybe.
Excellent. That is an interesting line. Gaius Calpernius Piso is the current governor of Africa. Gnaeus Calpernius Piso was embroiled in controversy following the death of Germanicus (there were rumors he poisoned him, possibly at the order of Tiberius) and subsequently committed suicide in 20 AD.
I would be related to Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso. I'm thinking even one of the sons of Plancina, who would somehow try to get over the disaster his direct family went through and redeem the honor of his father by being the man he never was.

Isn't Lucius Vitellius the Elder governor in 38? It's okay if you just placed a Piso there instead, I don't mean to step on your toes, and I'm completely cool with this sort of thing. :)

That works great. Plancina had Livia's protection so that probably was enough to keep you from being Tarnished by your father's name. If you like, you can take the Dishonored Vice (which is exactly for this type of situation), it basically gives you a -1d10 to your Auctoritas rolls. You don't have to take it though, as you could be in good enough standing that there is no real mechanical effect. Also if you are a Senator we will have to hash out your Enemy.
Haven't been posting much and just saw this. I'd love to give it a go if you still have room.

Yup. One slot left. Welcome aboard.
Pm me with your email address and I will send the rules.
Just another note about classes (since this came up in playtest), if you want to be a curiales/decurion (a provincial senator, not one in Rome) you would take the Plebian Class.
Just a clarification on occupations. The skill point they provide is the first one for that skill (one free skill point). So if you take craftsman it gives you your first rank in Trade ( you couldn't but two ranks, then use your occupation to boost it up to three for example).
I've got 3 characters almost built. I can play any depending on how the group would operate on what others are playing.
1. a retired gladiator, working as a bodyguard, possibly of a PC.
2. a Greek tutor/grammarian, good at research and academics but not rough and tumble.
3. a woman from a humble past who is now a priestess in the mystery cult of Isis.
Opinions?

These all look good to me.
Benois is a Senator, how about everyone else? It would be good to have a combat heavy character to play with that part of the game but I don't have to be that character. Trying the magic out might be good too.

So far I've only seen what you and Benoist have in mind. but my experience with the system is people tend to lean on combat-light characters like Senators.
Whatever the mix of characters I will do my best to provide a campaign that works well with their overall make-up. So if you want to make a combat character, definitely feel free. If you would rather go with one of the other options, don't feel pressured to make a combat heavy character.
I'm thinking of a military or ex-military man, maybe Equestrian, more upper class military rather than common soldier or gladiator. Dunno for sure yet though, also toying with the idea of priestly type or philosopher as well. Still reading through the rules. Definitely want to be Roman rather than foreign, unless a foreigner would fit the game Brendon has in mind. I would not be averse to playing a Celt merc or gladiator either.
Any of those options are fine sigmund. Going in today, will update you guys on the start date sometime next week.
Sounds good to me. :)
I'm leaning towards a priestess of Isis. I should have the character written up today.
I'll play the combat heavy. Going with the Equestrian soldier... what rank may he have Brendan? Does he still start the game as a Miles, or can he be like a Lower Tribune. Would an Equestrian class Roman be in the Vigiles? What kind of rank structure do the Vigilies have?
Edit: I'd also perhaps be interested in being a member or former member of the Urban units, as it seems to me this would fit better with the nature of the game, and make it less likely I'd have to go off tromping about the countryside... unless that's what ya need us to do Brendan :D

Equestrians would be upper rank like a tribune. They would serve in the vigiles and praetorian guard as well (also as tribunes and prefects). My understanding is tge vigiles and praetorians guards had a similar structure to the legions.
Ok, so he'll be of Equestrian rank in the Praetorians, makes it easy for him to be detached for other duties if the need arises I would think, and if it's ok with you Brendan :) I'll work on filling in the rest today and get him into the thread. Hope you're recovering well Brendan.
Edit: For simplicity's sake I'll make him be from the Bruttius clan, if it's ok Brendan. So his name is Titus Bruttius Balbus, pending approval.
Second edit: FYI Brendan, there's a type in the last line of the first paragraph under the Augustus entry of the political titles, where "Augustus" is missing the first "u" in it.
Third Edit: Does the Heavy Melee skill, which includes the Verutum (javelin) cover throwing the Verutum? Also, in the skill section the Verutum is listed under the Heavy Melee skill, but in the Weapons section, it is listed as being a Medium Melee weapon. Medium makes more sense to me, but I'm not sure which it's meant to be.
Ongoing edits: In the Equipment section under shields, the "Scutum" is misspelled "Sctutum" in the parentheses after "Heavy Shield".
Also, on the character sheet are boxes next to the name of the skill group. Is this box for listing the number of points spent on the skills in that category? Also, if i have spent no points in a category is that the same as gutting? If a category is gutted, which in my case is Specialist, does that mean the skills can not be used at all, or just that all the skills are 0? Also, I have a military patron. I'm guessing it would work for that patron to be a higher up in the Praetorians, but I'm not sure. Do I pick the patron or do you?

Sounds good. I have the character mostly created as far as I can tell. Gonna transfer him to a character sheet, then type him up into the post I started for him. I've also been adding edits to my previous post about stuff such as the Verutum and it being listed as both Heavy Melee and Medium Melee.
Thanks Sigmund. That is a great catch.
Quote from: BedrockBrendan;489700Thanks Sigmund. That is a great catch.
No problem bro, part of the reason for doing this right? :) The Verutum is important for a Roman soldier. It is supposed to be Medium Melee right?

I have to check the equipment list (don't have the doc at the moment) but I believe I wanted the verutum to be medium and the hasta to be heavy. In a recent playtest one of them was shifted and that probably explains the error.

Okay :) My character will have both medium and heavy melee anyway, so no biggie in the end, at least for this chargen.
I've filled in most of my character. One question I have is, what in the way of equipment would I be able to buy, and would it include my weapons and armor? Is the game going to take place in Rome itself, and would I be assumed to have a place to live (the family home) or is that something I'd have to buy? Also, still waiting on whether I choose my own Patron/Ally or if that's the GM's job.

Because you are a praetorian you can purchase their standard equipment without much fuss. Anything beyond that you can probably get your hands on. You can create your own patrons/clients or work them out with me. Given your wealth as an equestrian you probably have a house in Rome or just outside it. We will be starting in Rome but you will probably venture to other provinces).

Cool. Since I'm a Praetorian, it makes sense to me to have a house inside Rome. I'll work on the equipment list, but I plan on having the standard Praetorian gear, plus maybe a few extra nick-knacks, but nothing crazy.
How far into the campaign do you guys prefer to start? Would you rather we begin prior to your characters being made members of servants of gaius or would you prefer to already be members?

No problem. We can start the week following thanksgiving (try to start EDIT NOV 28 if that works).
Checked out invisible castle and if I can register without an issue (and it is cool with everyone else), I figure we cam use that for rolls (skofflox suggested this earlier in the thread).
Also, everyone should probably have a back up character just in case.
hiya gang. Still interested in PbP here...just been busy as of late so less time to post.
:)
When is the tentative start date for this? I can be ready to roll by the end of this coming weekend...(ED: ahh I see the week of the 28th is in the works!)
(Brendan, still working out the schedule for a Playtest of SoG...looks like 2 players sometime soon after Thanksgiving.)
I trust all is well with y'all !
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Yes, going to get things off the ground next week. I figure we can begin with everyone already part of the same Servants of Gaius "cell" (unless anyone objects)--I just assume this will make it easier to get things off the ground in the pbp medium. With that in mind we can use this week to individually cover how each of you joined and why (either here or by email if you want to keep character information private--if you don't have my email simple PM me and I will send it along). Soon I will start a new thread with some basic background info, maps, etc.
PS Awesome mews about playtest. Let me know how it goes.
Back from my Thanksgiving trip, and very much looking forward to the start of the game. Hope everyone's holiday was as awesome as mine :D

Wanted to clarify these for you. Sorry for the delay (but it looks like you found some additional issues in the mean time).
Vertum: This should be medium, not heavy, melee. The skill section is out of date and I just changed it to match equipment. Yes your skill in heavy, light or medium melee covers throwing the weapons in that category.
Boxes: The boxes next to the skill category names are for marking P or S for Primary and Seconday.
Skill gutting just makes your skills 0 (which is unskilled and means you roll 2d10 take the lowest).
You are all free to create your patrons and clients within reason but I am happy to give input or create these characters for you through PM.

Alright. I'll come up with the stats of Lucius Calpurnius Piso before that day.
Received the final version of the rules, BTW. :)
I am hoping to start the adventure thread tomorrow when I get back from the doctor. If anyone needs more time or has any questions feel free to PM me. Also does everyone understand how combat works (especially things like Closing and Reach?). I will be using the closed damage rule (which is standard). If you guys want to do open damage for surprise and targeted shots let me know (that really cranks up the lethality in those conditions but adds a level of believability).
Will post a new thread to start the adventure when I get back around 4-5 PM EST today. This is going to be a daily post game, but I will probably do a 2 day window for the first couple of posts so people have time to finish up characters and jump in. The game will start with your initiation into the Servants of Gaius (see background thread for more info).
It is probably best to send me your character details by email (don't want to use up peoples' PM boxes here): Brendandvs2@aol.com

Hey guys. Just trying to get a sense of where we are now: are we going to meet together somewhere on this new day or .. what are you guys thinking of/want to do at this point?
That'll help me make a decision for Lucius (I assume he spent the night at his own home after the meeting).
Benoist, there was talk of meeting at Carus's in the afternoon/evening. I gave everyone directions to the warehouse/loft I call home.
(Gaia is here and we are waiting for others to show.)

Yes, the action seems to be occuring at Carus's place right now.
Just returned from holiday vacation, so will be more available for posting again. Quintus and Theo were on their way to Carus' place last post, so I'm assuming I have arrived unless we need to rp out knocking on the door and being let in and stuff. No worries Benoist. It has been a crazy month for everyone I am sure. I expect things to move at a slow pace till after the holidays. By the way I just got the SOG cover and will send all of you guys a preview by email.
Sorry, been checking the front page and I missed that the game had updated.
As I early thought that idea was to go to Carrus' and discuss plans, he and I had started in that direction previously. So, I'm going to assume that Gaia got their first (of the guests) and now everyone has arrived so Gaia and Carrus will fill in what they've thought of so far.
I missed it to. I normally subscribe to threads so i get emails, but new threads throw me off. Might help if you could give us an ooc post in this thread about new ones and I'll get an email and know to set a new sub please :D
Edit: now that I'm taking a couple classes as well as working full time I get distracted even easier than before and might not think to check for new threads myself. Don't wanna keep folks waiting.
I'm getting that sense I'm forgetting something in the game. Who took the money that was proposed to us by Claudius? Is it Lucius or someone else?

The layout guy did a great job, but you might notice in places like character creation we werent able to put spaces between some of the lists and surrounding paragraphs. I hope this doesn't make it too hard for you guys to read, but it really couldn't be avoided. Our only other option was to remove text (which i didnt want to do).
FYI Ya'all, my wife underwent surgery this morning. It went well, and she's recovering now, but I will be online only intermittenly, and might not have a chance to post very much this week.

Dont worry sigmund, we can just assume you are quietly following along till you get back. Hope isn't too serious. I have had seven surgeries inside a year so i sympathize. Surgery is no fun.
Thanks for the PDF!
Just went over my copy. Good work, Brendan. Be proud.

You are welcome. Looks like ghe character sheets got left out of the final layout (which we missed because they were in the next-final layout. Just sent over the updated file (also fixed the chapter 10-11 transition). If you dont receive a link to the new file let me know. In the meantime character sheets are up on the website.
Hey Brendan, are there any slots open now?
(Says a dragonslaying Slayers playtester. )
I have not received any mesages relating to the updated version BB.

I just sent you the latest file directly by email. When you log onto rpgnow is there a link to the updated download?

Email me and we will discuss the pbp campaign.

It appears so BB, they just hadn't advised me of an update to the file, which is unusual for them. I normally get update message for products. Thanks BB. Also, be advised that I will be undergoing my surgery on the 20th of March, so my posting might slow down even more that week.

I hope it is nothing too serious (the surgery). I will keep you in my thoughts on the 20th. Take your time getting better and post again when you feel up to it.

Hernia repair :( Not life-threatening though, so I'm sure I'll be fine.

Good luck. Glad it isn't anything too serious. Still, surgery is surgery so I imagine you aren't looking forward to it.

You are correct... it's a pain in the ass. Still, it could be worse. It's going to be out-patient, and I should be recovering quite well in less than a week. Hopefully anyway. Thanks for the well wishes :)

That is good. I think the biggest risk for something like that is infection (which is a risk with any surgery) so you should be fine as long as you follow you post op instructions.

Will do.
Just wanted to give everyone who is participating in the play by post Servants pf Gaius an invitation to join my actual live servants of Gaius game should you ever be in the Boston area (as far as I know none of you are all in different states and countries). Open invitation.

Wish I could bro :) That would be awesome! Unfortunately, Boston is WAY too north for my tastes. If I never see snow again it'll be too soon. As we all know though... life is like a box of chocolates.
I just want to let everyone know I am still very much into this game and am following the posting in the IC thread. I am just waiting for others to get the chance to do stuff since Quintus had pretty much taken action for a couple days so far.

If people dont object i can set it so the ship departs and everyone is aboard wednesday (this is my first time GMing a PbP so i want to makes sure everyone both gets a chance to take action but that things move comfortably for all). Share your preferences on the pacing and i will oblige.
By the way started a log of one of my live servants of gaius adventures in The design, develment and game play forum if anyone is interrested in checking it out.

Unless we want to make any more advanced plans, or you Brendan have any intriguing or encounters you wish to spring on us before our departure, I'm ok with advancing the timeline.
Okay. I will advanxe the timeline to everyone being aboard the ship heading toward Mauretania. Will put the next post up this evening (to give people an opportuni to send me any important messages about their prep before hand).
