This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

as the others leave the room I walk cautiously up to the now silent figure on his throne...eyeing the thing with curiosity and awe I whisper as I reach a hand to touch, hesitating to do so at the last moment...

"This son of Dakon will do his best to free your shade from it's prison. I shall make a tale of mighty Hrolf, to tell 'bout the hearths when the cold gathers."

I sketch a bow and hurry to catch the others. I bring my bow back to half draw as I leave the building.
Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

"Go with my blessings, all of you," King Hrolf says as you leave.

Outside, you head round to the back of the church and through the brush until you reach a clearing. Dewin has already spotted the building, a half-ruined building that pushes out from the side of the mountain through some trees. It's clearly only the beginning of a larger complex inside the mountain.

Though the masonry is crumbling, you can see two large stone doors jutting out on a portico that form an obvious entrance if you can get them open. There are also several cracks in the walls large enough to squeeze through. Finally, in several places the roof appears to have collapsed, and if you could climb up, you could probably lower yourself down.

First picture is the front, facing you, with the stone doors. The second photo is another section of the building. It's very roughly rectangular, with lots of little sections coming off, so that it sprawls. It's about 75m before it hits mountain, and maybe 50m wide on average.

Keeping the bottle of blessed water close to hand, Sighard walks with the others towards their new destination.

"I was hesitant to mention this in front of the King, but would our bottle of blessed water free him from his curse? Should we encounter many of shades we will be hard pressed" Sighard declares, "Perhaps if we went in through the roof we could see them from up high and be more prepared".

Norel moves up to one of the cracks in the wall and peers inside the structure, taking a moment or two to adjust his vision for the darkness in the structure.

"We might do well to rest here for a time to gather our strength, and plan our next moves", Alric says quietly.

Peering through the crack, you see the silhouette of a human form brandishing a sword... But it's just a statue in an otherwise empty room. The walls are covered in rotting tapestries, but there's no sign of life.

Bryce nods in agreement.

"That may be wise.  Especially if we will be confronting shades and other unnatural creatures."

Would any of us know anything specific about 'shades', especially how to combat them?

They're the ghosts of evil priests, wizards and such. They come to be either when the body isn't buried properly, or through the use of dark magic. Holy water, magic affecting spirits and enchanted weapons all affect them, as will breaking the spell holding them here or burying the bodies properly.

Also, they normally can't enter an area that's been consecrated, though you saw at least one of them in the church, so either the church has been deconsecrated or something's odd is going on with the shades.

Would a bolt (or arrow, etc.) on which 'multimissile' was cast count as an 'enchanted weapon'?

Yeap! Any spell that counts as dealing magical damage works.

Ok, so how long do you want to rest for, and do you want to rest up here, or trudge back down the mountain?

OOC: It's up to the spell casters.  In-game, it's only like an hour or so after we got up for the day, right?  In-game, Norel would balk at 'resting' again since we just got up for the day.  However, I understand the meta-game reason for resting again.

I figured it would be at least mid-day, didn't we have to pack up camp and then march back up the mountain from where we had fled to after the spirits in the copse?

I figure it's just before lunch. Between packing up camp, hiking up the mountain, looking around, fighting ghosts and talking with ancient undead kings, it's been a busy three hours or so.
