Title: [OOC][Earthdawn]Dawning of the New Age
Post by: Serious Paul on November 03, 2008, 02:38:44 PM
This is the OOC thread. The IC thread is now open, feel free to post whatever you'd like, if you want to, in reaction to the arrival of outsiders in your Kaer. Eventually all of you will be summoned to the Council Chamber around dinner time.

Please feel free to ask whatever questions you may have at this point.

For convenience a link (http://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?t=12448) to the Kaer Thread, which contains our maps, etc...

I tried to get a post up, but I'm not feeling it. I'll wait for the summons; just give me as much description as you can at that point, please.

Okay Game Day was today, and my daughter has a field trip tomorrow. So I will get us moving faster tomorrow afternoon, after the field trip.

Garon makes a Perception test. He's step 4 on Perception - damn trolls! - and thus rolls a d6.

1d6+0
4+0 = 4

I'm afraid a 4 only buys you this: Minas seems tense, and from the set of his posture and the look on his face he's definitely been yelling at someone. Behind him, just inside the door is two more Guardsmen, both look shaken, but say nothing.

Isil's sizing up the situation too. He's a little more perceptive though:

Isil realizes we've been summoned to the only large private chamber in the kaer so that the horror-possessed dwarves can consume our flesh and bathe in our anguish. Shorter game than you expected, neh?

You notice the Zombies...I mean uhm, obviously you're more perceptive than your larger companion. Besides what I described to him you notice that the Dwarves have left their armor and weapons in a neat stack, discreetly near the second row of seats. They glow with a faint enchantment, which you'd be willing to guess is some sort of alarm.

You also see that a table has been placed in the center of the room, on one sideis the dwarves, on the other is the Council of Peers-divided clearly into two groups. At the Head of the Table is Navic, who looks exhausted. At the foot of the table is Thork who looks angry, and excited. Obviously a great argument has taken place.

Any specific questions based on this? Or anything I missed you'd like described?

Nope, that's cool.

Protocol here is that we can sit down and talk politely? Or is this more of a stand-and-answer-"Yessir" situation?

Given the presence of the Council, I think Guard-trained Garon will come to [whatever passes for] attention, and remain there until granted leave to act or speak or be at ease.

Thanks to Engine my machine is at least working for the time being, and pretty comparable to it's previous performance level. But my schedule for today, and last night has been pretty harsh, so I'm hoping to get us moving forward this evening when I get out of work. (Even if I get out late.)

The room you're all in is quiet, and obviously protected by some sort of magical ward, that prevents you from being overheard easily. (It can't completely muffle all sound, but it does dampen sounds, and mix them to anyone listening.)

Harker has a large scroll case that he seems to have picked up from somewhere clutched in his right hand. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Okay these are what Minas and Navic will be equipping you with:

Raynor's Map: This enchanted map adds whatever it's owner sees automatically.

Two Light Crystals: One medium soft light, and one small red light crystal.

3 Death Cheat Charms. These function just like the book says.

An ever full pot-enchanted with elemental water, this quart sized pot can produce up to 4 gallons of fresh water a day, hot or cold.

Elemental Blankets-enchanted with elemental earth and fire these blankets can warm or cool it's user.

All the equipment on your character sheet. (Your welcome!)

500 pieces of gold in a chest, sealed with a intricate lock. This is your "walking around" money, that you can use to buy supplies and goodwill.

Questions? Anything I missed that you may need, feel free to ask for-the elders will consider each request on it's merits, and what they have available.

By "tomorrow's first light," I obviously mean whatever time they spool up the big light crystal "in the morning," presuming they keep some diurnal cycle at all.

Here's (http://rpg.freespeech-alpha.com/characters/Garon%20Stonehand.html) my updated character sheet. I've added the padded leather armor, a backpack, a couple weeks of rations, a backpack, eating utensils, the stuff given us by the council, and the Adventurer's Kit. Most of this stuff he can just get from Stores, but the utensils and backpack he'll get from his mother.

Garon will carry the gold in the middle of his pack, stuffing the inside of the little chest so it won't rattle. He'll keep 10 gold in his belt pouch for immediate use, as well as his own 12 silver. And he'll probably spend the whole night sleeping at the door, ready to leave when the time comes. :)

I know animals are rare within the kaer, but does anyone have a dog they'd lend us? Garon was going to bring it up - they're useful animals when in unknown situations - but we do have a Beastmaster, so if it's going to come from someone, it might as well come from him. Is a guard dog something we'd like to have?
Title: [OOC][Earthdawn]Dawning of the New Age

A dog is indeed a difficult creature to obtain, under normal circumstances, however you guys can have access to one fo the few that are trained to work guard and hunting duty. I'm unconcerned about the particular breed, but it won't be bigger than a Lab.

The dwarves will light their small light crystals, which are red hued, and adjust their loads then assuming none of object they'll organize the march with you, and the female troubadour in the rear. The march tot he surface will only take a half an hour, and the walls along the way will be decorated with a variety of protective enchantments, and markings, and you'll see several disabled traps, but the dwarves will seem worried that they may have missed one.

Questions?

As long as I'm going to make posts about Garon looking around, I suppose I may as well actually make a perception test. Garon (http://rpg.freespeech-alpha.com/characters/Garon%20Stonehand.html)'s perception step is only 4, so I'm rolling a d6:

1d6+0
2+0 = 2

Yes, well. It's a good thing I'm not off on my own. Still, I do have a few questions:

How far is it from the entrance of the kaer to the clearing where the ship is parked?
What is the terrain like, both up-close and in the distance? Up-close, what sort of foliage do we see, and does it appear healthy? Can we see any animals? In the distance, what sort of environment are we in? Are there mountains in the distance, or deserts?
Title: [OOC][Earthdawn]Dawning of the New Age
Post by: Serious Paul on December 02, 2008, 09:32:49 AM
You notice the Dwarves seem to be wary about you, keeping an eye on you-but not in a overtly hostile way. As if they'd had a bad experience or two around Trolls.

Quote from: Engine;270663How far is it from the entrance of the kaer to the clearing where the ship is parked?

About three hundred yards, straight line distance, but because of terrain features it will be a total of four hundred yards to walk.

QuoteWhat is the terrain like, both up-close and in the distance?

Up close the terrain is rocky, with short and long grasses, and some scrub bushes. In the distance you see ground drop, and the grass gets greener, and taller, eventually giving way to short trees, then taller ones. A massive forest lies in the distance, but beyond that appears to be a large body of water, larger than anything you've ever imagined, let alone see.

QuoteUp-close, what sort of foliage do we see, and does it appear healthy?

Your best guess is that it's late summer, possibly early fall. The plants all appear to be healthy, in fact you pass a small bush that bears blackberries-which Junipero points out are edible.

QuoteCan we see any animals?

You see some birds in the distance, and some field mice, but little else.

QuoteIn the distance, what sort of environment are we in? Are there mountains in the distance, or deserts?

Your Kaer appears to have been built into a natural rock formation, midway up a large mountain, as I stated earlier rocky steppes give way to plains, then forest, then a large sea.

Further questions?

Currently you're heading Westward, at a pretty fast clip.

Okay once finished with Junipero, you'll be invited to go below and stow your gear. The three of you have been given one of the few "State Rooms" to share. The dwarves have put together a makeshift set of bunks for you, that are made of woven ropes (Hammocks basically), and you have a table, three chairs, and a chest to use. You also have a spyglass mounted to the rooms single porthole style window, it folds in to allow the window to close. Currently the window is open and a small bird is perched on it.

Questions?

No worries.

The group has been summoned to the main deck where you'll be served dinner, and sit with the dwarves. You will be introduced to the crew, and the Captain, a dwarf named Torin Rocksunder. He's a burly dwarf, with broad shoulders and hands like jack hammers.

His first mate is a Dwarf named Tailbit, a shifty looking fellow with a crystal eye.  Questions or comments?

The possibility of immanent ship-to-ship combat - if I manage to wakey-wakey! - has me thinking about Great Leap. Looking here (http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:bWG6--AffkYJ:www.harmsfam.net/cmsimple/ed/talents/TALENTS.DOC+%22great+leap%22+earthdawn+harmsfam&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a) [.doc file available here (//www.harmsfam.net/cmsimple/ed/talents/TALENTS.DOC)] it appears that Garon's (http://rpg.freespeech-alpha.com/characters/Garon%20Stonehand.html) maximum leap distance is 20 yards, with his average being 10. Can that possibly be correct? Or is the version on Harmsfam from ED2?

At this point it's quite clear the ship is under attack, but unclear just exactly how.  Everyone please tell me OOC what you'll be doing, and then feel free to make a single IC post describing these actions, but keep in mind that it is unlikely any of you will make too far from your quarters.

None of you, except Garon, clearly recall the way up to the deck. (Keep in mind this is your first time aboard an Airship, and you just woke up.  Your initial confusion will not last.)

I'll give you all a day to make IC posts then I'll start posting stuff. As always, feel free to add a little color to what I post, or fill in blanks I leave.
Title: [OOC][Earthdawn]Dawning of the New Age
Post by: Engine on January 15, 2009, 08:34:45 AM
Garon will put on his armor, take up his sword, and cautiously lead the others up on-deck. His primary goal will be protecting Isil and Coaul, his secondary goal will be protecting the airship and her crew.

edit: And I'll do Wood Skin before I leave, also. Rank [1] plus Toughness [16, or step 7] is step 8, or 2d6.

2d6+0
5,6+0 = 11

So I add 11 to my Death and Unconsciousness ratings, for a total of 42/50. And my skin looks like bark! Which is good, I guess. ;)

edit 2: Oops. Forgot to re-roll the 6:

1d6+0
5+0 = 5

So the final Death and Unconsciousness ratings are 47/55. Go d20 Dice Bag (http://www.penpaperpixel.org/tools/d20dicebag.htm)!

Speaking of which, does anyone know of an ED-specific die roller? I keep forgetting to explode dice, and the d20 Dice Bag isn't really set up for things like rolling steps. Any suggestions?

edit: Well, earthdawn.com has one (http://www.earthdawn.com/index.php?categoryid=43), but you can only copy + paste the result, not the raw numbers, which kind of sucks. I'll keep looking.

Title: [OOC][Earthdawn]Dawning of the New Age
Post by: Serious Paul on January 20, 2009, 01:04:13 PM
13 combat trolls, the others-about 12 are needed to fly their boats, and man their cannons. Currently there 22 dwarves on deck, six are manning guns, six should be, but are defending their guns. The rest are armed, and generally armored dwarves-except of course, Junipero.

Indeed. Can I spend my action for the first round I'm up on deck sizing up the situation and then relaying my info to the others (including Junipero if possible)?

Specifically, I'd be looking for the following:

1) Who's leading the attack
2) Are there any mages/archers?
3) How are troops transferring between ships - grapnels, swinging on ropes, planks, etc.?
4) Where's the helm on this thing?

Per is 1d12. The roll is: 11

Of course.

Looks like, for now, that the largest troll on the deck of your ship (As soon as I get this map up, he's in in the middle.) is leading the attack.

Quote2) Are there any mages/archers?

None readily apparent. There are no bows visible on any of the ships.

Quote3) How are troops transferring between ships - grapnels, swinging on ropes, planks, etc.?

The first three leapt from their Drakkar. The rest have thrown grappling lines, and are getting ready to swing across.

Quote4) Where's the helm on this thing?

On your ship in the rear, on the aft castle. Currently manned by two dwarves.

I was waiting for DU to post. Is he out?

If so, I'm gonna get Junipero to drop the ship's altitude as quick as possible. If the trolls're swinging across, it should leave the boarders stranded in mid-air, and put us out of the firing arcs of their cannons. Then, we brake and wheel unexpectedly as they follow us down, and rake them with cannon fire (assuming they have to tilt forward as they go down, that means exposing their deck to us).

Ah, I'm all for Isil's plan.

Okay the ship is starting to descend, but not fast enough to stop three more trolls from leaping aboard. Once they're aboard the remaining trolls will begin to shift their drakkars for better positioning. Currently your starboard rudder is on fire, if it is destroyed you will lose about half your maneuverability.

Garon is going to look for the dwarf who is hardest-pressed, and take a Great Leap over there, attacking the dwarf's opponent on the way down. With his sword. Hard.

Okay Engine go ahead and roll your Melee Weapons, and/or any relevant talents you'd like to use. PM or post the result of the dice. DU: If you'd like to help put out the fire you can help the dwarves pass buckets of water and sand, or you can try and keep the Trolls from attacking the damage control crew.

I suppose I should roll my Great Leap, to make sure I make it over there. It's step 12, or 2d10:

2d20+0
18,13+0 = 31

That means I could jump 31 yards, if I got that right. Does that seem retarded to anyone else? Anyway.

Melee Weapons is step 9, d8+d6:

1d6+0
1+0 = 1

1d8+0
8+0 = 8

I re-roll the 8, for:

1d8+0
4+0 = 4

So, 1+8+4 = 13. Which means I'll hit anything with a physical defense of 13 or less, right? Seems like maybe I ought to read the rules again.

Heh. I figure I would be more useful fending off the Trolls. So Unarmed combat rolls we go...

Unarmed Combat is step 10, d10+d6:

1d6+0
5+0 = 5

1d10+0
3+0 = 3

So 5+3 = 8. So I hit any target with a PD of 8 or less. I also went ahead and rolled for damage.

Damage test, Strength step is 5 so 1d8.

1d8+0
8+0 = 8.

:) Assuming these guys are armored, Coaul will soon realize he's an idiot and run away to grab a weapon.

Oh, yeah: damage. Paul, if I hit, could you roll [step 14, d20 + d4] damage? My rolls have been suspiciously good lately; I need you to average it out for me. ;)

I'm drawing my sword and then casting Mind Dagger at the nearest troll.

d10+d6 = 5+2 = 7 vs. the troll's spell defense

If that succeeds, damage is a d12+2.

That might be the problem. :p

Your good luck continues you roll a 19 and a 3 for a total of 22, which causes two wounds; which in turns requires your opponent to roll versus Knockdown. 22-11=11, he rolls... in what must be the absolute worst roll in history a D10 and a D* for a total of...4. He is therefor knocked down, and twice wounded, for a total of -5 steps. He's also nearly dead...you've literally chopped a massive chunk out of him, or lopped a portion of a limb off. I'll let you take care of that detail in your IC post.

You do succeed, inflicting 7 points of damage, reduced by one for his mystic armor. This does not stagger the troll, but does cause him to momentarily pause, and bleed from the nose.

Yeah unfortunately that's a pretty clean miss.

Go ahead and make IC posts folks, and I'll add to it, and adjust the opponents!

Insanely sick. But I have Thursday and Friday off. I will get this kick started then, when I am hopefully less prolifically sick.
