This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

StormBringer

You make the tree line and see that the road continues upwards into the forest, leveling out as it enters a culvert about 20yards ahead of you.  It looks to be about fifteen feet above the level of the swamp, and you can see where the swamp has risen in the past from the exposed roots.  The culvert has rather sharply angled sides on either side that form a berm about ten feet above your heads.  The forest is thick on both sides, but the wind that whistles through the opening is also causing the trees to sway heavily; the creaks and groans that are echoed and amplified through the gully sound like the laments of tortured spirits unable to find their release.  Through the increasing darkness, you occasionally see a flash from the storm, and a peal of thunder as though the gods themselves are warring around you.

The road goes on through the culvert for about 50 yards, when the sides taper off to the level of the roadway again.  The road had narrowed to a few yards between the walls, but opens up again to six or seven yards wide.  Even in the gathering gloom, you can see what appears to be a somewhat wider area 50 yards ahead.  It looks like the ground on either side of the road banks toward the level of the swamp, starting about 10 yards out.  The danger of getting flooded appears minimal, but you are not sure how much cover you can find in a pine forest such as this, whose shadowy depths induce a sense of maliciousness directed towards your party that presses on your very souls.

Catching up the rest of the group, Thraim yells over the howling winds, "this looks like a good spot to weather out the storm.  What do you think?"

Venosha

"Looks a tad bit safer then before!" Semina shouts into the wind.  Motioning to Adarleigh to dismount Icerick, Semina follows suit.  "Do you mind holding Icerick's reins for a moment while I converse with the dwarf,"  she asks of the elf maiden.

"Thraim." Semina comes up behind the dwarf.  "I will take my horse and place him closer to tree line, due to his sporadic jitters." "It won't take a but a moment, and the rain will be here soon enough," Semina frowns.

Walking away from the dwarf, Semina looks across the horizon as the blackness descends upon the party. 'We should find some form of shelter,' Semina contemplates as she watches the sky glisten with lightning and rumble with drumming thunder.

Since they've found the spot to wait out the storm, Thraim goes about the business of setting up his tent properly to withstand the strong winds.  He makes sure not to set it up near or under any small or weak trees.  With his hammer he stakes down several pitons to hold the line for the horses.  Once he's completed his preparations, he'll assist anyone else in setting up their gear for the storm.

Semina heads into the tree line a bit, and secures Icerick loosely to a branch.  She knows the horse will not flee due to the lightning but his attitude can influence the other horses, causing panic.

She gathers some rope and her shoddy hand axe out of her saddle bags and begins to look for some fallen branches.  She inspects the limbs lying upon the ground and piles them by a tree near Thraim's tent.

Collecting all that is agreeable on the ground,  Semina finds a rather small tree to hack down for her shelter.  Chopping away, she reminds herself to bring Icerick closer to her once her shelter is constructed.

'What I wouldn't give for some fresh fruit or a fine pork roast,' her thoughts betray her.  Sighing at the work ahead Semina begins to hum to herself, so the temptation of food doesn't make the day seem longer.

Overhead, the thunder shatters the sky, and bolts of lightning wreak destruction upon the ground.  The wind is picking up, making the tops of the trees sway dangerously, leading you to suspect there may be more than rain falling on your heads.

Everyone is finishing up with their make-shift shelters when you hear the wall of rain advance on your position from the northwest.  Within minutes, the torrential downpour is pelting your camp, running down the tree branches and drenching the ground.  You can barely see the road through the curtain of water, but enough to tell it will be a treacherous river of mud soon.

More concerning than your travel plans are the vaguely humanoid forms that can be seen in the rain at edges of your perception.  Shapes that seem to flit back and forth on the far side of the road; outlines that seem stark in the burning white arcs of lightning, but murky and indistinct otherwise, as though your minds are playing tricks.

"Let's hope they don't like the rain either" Naren mutters.

Seeing the humanoid shapes moving in the curtain of rain, Thraim calmly picks up his crossbow and loads a bolt in it.

Yelling over the winds so that those around him can hear him, Thraim says to the group, "it looks like we have some uninvited guests, and I'm not feeling particularly social at the moment."

Heathcliffe arches an eyebrow as he spots the phantasms skulking about in the green but a look of surprise overcomes his face at Thraim's words. "So you see them too?" the halfling softly exclaims. He had momentarily pondered heading out to stir the lot out of hiding if they truly existed, but a Greensberry is never a fool and now that others were aware, they could take care of it.

Sander eyes the forms warily, then considers his options. A light spell would quickly reveal their unknown visitors, but would likely prove useful for more mundane tasks as well before the night was out. Command, however...
"APPROACH!" Sander shouts, spreading his fingers and pointing his open palm at one of the obscured figures.

(OOC: Ok, do I have to roll any dice? Assuming a D20 of some sort is required, I rolled a 1. Proof of roll can be found at: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?p=3570146#post3570146 )

Semina relinquishes her drenched robe and idles under her sieve like shelter.  She squats in a meditating position for a calming effect as she tries to drown out the sound of the battering rain.

'Exhaustion must be playing with my state of mind, for I swear there is something hovering out there' she begins to tighten her jaw.

Never taking her eyes of the lurking figures, Semina listens to Thraim's announcement of unwanted visitors.  She alters her position as warranted and folds her arms into each other so she may reach her axe, if the uninvited become unfriendly.

Semina's ears perk once more, as Sander yells towards the lurkers.  "It looks as though our visitors are uninvited no more." she yells to whomever is listening.

(OOC:  Semina is trying to look a little bit harder at these humanoids, is there anything more I am able to see?)

They seem to keep just out of your line of vision, just beyond the veil of rain, but they occasionally glide forward towards your camp, only to seemingly disappear.

Gathering the strength of his deity, Sander shouts his command towards the amorphous group.   It echoes all around you in the deep woods, but it seems to have no affect on any of them.

Despite the the slashing torrent assailing your shelters, you begin to pick up the whispers of a low groaning.  At first you think it the trees swaying in the storm, but it isn't an entirely natural sound that you hear.  A noise that reverbates among the trees around you, but seeming to come from somewhere above.

Punctuating the moaning is an entirely natural sound of some kind of wild canines howling and barking to each other.

Semina sit upon the back of her heals, studying  the apparitions as they come closers, then disappearing.   She watches intently as the figures blend to rhythm of the storm.

Very alert and excited about the possible threat, Semina remains still so no aggression is shown.  She occasionally glance at her companions for any signal of what's to come, but everyone is posed just as she is.

Semina tries not to let her mind wander on why Sanders spell didn't entice the lurkers closer, or how the moaning among the trees is beginning to annoy her.  'Stay focus.  Don't let your guard down,' she reminds herself.

Now the cry of the dogs brings even more emotion to Semina's stability.  She listens to Naren's comments, as her agitation tries not to rear its ugly head.
