Title: (Interest) SWN Summer Campaign
Post by: Mr. Kent on April 21, 2014, 04:47:31 PM
I love Stars Without Number, but my attempts to enjoy it at some other rpg forum didn't go so well. I'm interested in running a game here if anyone's interested, player-driven sandboxy goodness.

I think it would be a good experience to run a limited campaign over the summer with an endpoint in sight.

I have SWN's full core book (mechs! AI!) and all supplements except Suns of Gold. I also have Other Dust to pull material from (thanks to the good ol' Bundle of Holding). As long as you have the core book you'd be okay.

I had two possible concepts--Covert Ops themed hijinks using Darkness Visible, and scientific adventures with lots of deadly pretech and maltech. I'm starting to like the idea of combining them, too.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

My thoughts are "Yay!"

I have the SWN bundle, so I am ready to go. Between the idea of covert ops and mythic archeology, a la Indiana Jones, I sorta lean towards the latter. However if you throw in Andromeda Syndrome links between the two I'd be happy like a pig in shit.

I wanna play a Dr. Doreen Boyle from 'Helix'! I'm gonna be a straight shootin' medical researcher filled with Southern sass and charming colloquialisms!

I would like to play.  I will probably play a warrior type character.

Nice! I'll start generating some basic setting details. The PCs could be running their own mini Perimeter Agency, hunting down tech...

I'd love to play anything in SWN, but Play by Post is an unfamiliar format for me and I don't want to bog things down with my ignorance. Would it be a problem?

No, not at all! Perfectly fine if you're new to play-by-post. I'll do my best to make it a good start for you.

I created a Dice Room at this dice rolling site called Stars Without Number (http://rolz.org/myroomlog?r=Stars+Without+Number).  Feel free to use it too if you want. :)

I'll have setting details this weekend! If anyone would like to start working out a character feel free - I like the Dice Room Drohem linked to and will likely use that for my own rolls. If anyone would rather wait til this weekend to make their character that's fine too.

Let's do 4d6 straight, drop the lowest
STR, INT, WIS, DEX, CON, CHA

A preview: Names generated thus far for my pool of worlds are Qetesh, Shaddai, and Waldo

I'll wait to generate. It'll probably be an expert with whatever skills are needed.

Are you going to use the rule fixes Sine Nomine (the writer) has discussed on this forum?

Slight and petite, but ends up mothering everyone anyway as she was the eldest of six kids. A heavily idiomatic Southern belle who took charm school but couldn't finish as the family grew too big. Raised her male brothers, and more than a few cousins too, several of whom ended up in Waldo prisons because in their youth they gave lip to authorities. Can fit in with the crass, but tries to bring in some class, so can switch from easy going to prude on a dime.

Lived on Qetesh with its domed cities. Would often sneak out with family for a hoedown, or hunting, or checking on bootleg stills and crops in the wilderness where the ruins are. Often had to rescue kinfolk from tech dangers during these outings as Jo-jo was one of the few who was literate as well as technically inclined.

Got noticed by the good doctor and now has a right stable job, enough to send even a bit back to kin.

I'll need more setting info before I can fill out more. Otherwise I'll be stepping on the GM's toes about world building.

Immediate Needs:

What type of worlds (culture, tech level, attitude, other notables, etc.) are those starting three?

Which are we assumed to come from, or at least associate regularly?

Are we as a party starting at tech level 3 or 4?

Are we covert ops or archaeologists, or a mix, and by how much?

Are we employees with a regular monthly income (as noted in the core rulebook), or are we private and paying the daily lifestyle rate?

Any alien species available for players?
Title: (Interest) SWN Summer Campaign
Post by: Mr. Kent on April 25, 2014, 10:45:17 AM
While I absolutely love creating new races, for this I've decided the alien races in Titan Sector are the ones in the published material. The fact that they're all either physically tough species or have some physical defensive/adaptive feature really works in their favor in this case, as any weaker species probably didn't last this long to remain a presence. In order of commonality:

Hochog >> Ssath >> Qotah (from a Mandate Archive) >> Chittik (Hard Light) >> Ushan (Hard Light)

The last two don't have set assets written up in game, but extrapolating from NPCs and the text, the beetle-like Chittik have a natural 1d4 dam claw attack. Sun-worshipping Ushan are immune to Radiation damage, and on a successful Physical Save may instead heal a point of damage.

Alright, genned up a character in our dice-rolling room. Let me know if everything looks alright. I'll hold off on spending more credits if that's ok, I'd like to see if tech 4 is available for medical supplies.

Character Name: Blinov Yegor
Player Name: Shipyard Locked
Character Class: Psychic (Biopsionic)
Character Level: 1
Background Package: Urchin
Training Package: Adventuring Psychic
Homeworld:
Languages: English, Russian
Special Ability: Psychic powers

=== ABILITY SCORES ===
[12] - STR (0)
[14] - INT (+1)
[17] - WIS (+1)
[12] - DEX (0)
[12] - CON (0)
[13] - CHA (0)

=== COMBAT STATISTICS ===
[4] - Hit Points
[2] – Psi Points (currently 1)
[5] - Armor Class

=== PSYCHIC POWERS ===
Biopsionics (primary) – Biostasis – Psi Cost: 1
The biopsionic can maintain the vital life processes of a mortally wounded teammate with a touch. The biopsionic may restore to life a creature he is touching that has been dead for no more than six rounds. There is a 100% chance of success if this power is used within three rounds of death, with the chance decreasing by 25% for each round afterwards. The creature is set to zero hit points and remains unconscious until it receives medical attention. It will die if it does not receive such attention within 24 hours. This power does not function on creatures that have been torn apart or otherwise mangled beyond conventional surgical repair, nor those dead of poison, disease, or old age. This power adds 2 System Strain points to the target if successful.

Precognition – Omen – Psi Cost: 1
The precog may force a brief subconscious examination of future possibilities. The precog must have a relatively straightforward choice before her- perhaps to open a box, swallow a pill, or go into a spaceport bar. The precog will receive a distinct sense of whether following that course of action will result in physical injury or mental distress within the next ten minutes, according to the GM’s best judgment of likely outcomes. This power can be used only once per hour.

=== MONEY ===
[472] - Credits

=== EQUIPMENT ===
-- Semi-automatic Pistol (1d6+1; Range 30/100m; Rds 12; Tech 3)
-- Woven Body Armor (AC 5; Enc 1; Tech 3)
-- Ammunition, 20 rounds X2 (Enc 2; Tech 2)
-- Backpack (Enc 1; Tech 1)
-- Medkit (Enc 2; Tech 4)
-- Lazarus Patches x 2 (Enc 1 each; Tech 4)
-- Compad

=== DESCRIPTION ===
Skinny, short twenty-something with brown bangs over his eyes and oversized headphones. Really digs exotic sodas.

=== BACKGROUND ===
Street urchin turned psi-medic for hire, but more loyal than you’d think. Follows commander Aleksandr around because of their shared Russian heritage, but doesn’t go for the whole “father figure” shtick.

Looking good!

***

Titan Sector, Year 3200

The sector's great powers are the Titan Protectorate and the Concordat Holy Union. The Titan Protectorate was born of the ashes of the Terran Mandate in 3150. In 3160, a separatist movement undertaking the tenets of an alien religion formed the Concordat. Armed conflict between the Protectorate and its upstart offspring began the following year.

Locked in war from 3161 to 3176, the conflict ended with the Concordat retreating to another corner of space. While outright hostilities have been few in the decades since, a constant cold war continues.

Though Titan Protectorate has wiped away most traces of the original Terran Mandate, remnants remain. The Perimeter Agency, once a galaxy-spanning organization to weed out dangerous and unstable tech, fell largely into disarray. Titan Sector's own branch was privatized in 3180 by neo-physicist Dr. Nagesh Nadir, who beat out a proposal from Newsun-Matsuri Energy Concern in a heated bid.

Twenty years on, the Perimeter Agency is still alive, though drastically reduced in scope and operations. Nadir has brought you into the fold, hand-picking each of you for your experience and potential.

What type of worlds (culture, tech level, attitude, other notables, etc.) are those starting three?
   - Qetesh is technically "Qetesh II" in the Qetesh system. It has domed cities and is known for its alien ruins.
   - Shaddai is a massive trade hub, formerly a military staging area during the war with the Concordat. When looking for goods or services, this is often the first and best place to look.
   - Waldo is a Protectorate prison world. You all likely know or know of at least one wrongly imprisoned individual.

Other possible good starting worlds are (TBA when I get back tonight)

Which are we assumed to come from, or at least associate regularly?
The worlds above are all good starting points of PC origin, and your Perimeter Base is on Qetesh II.

Are we as a party starting at tech level 3 or 4? We begin at TL4

Are we covert ops or archaeologists, or a mix, and by how much? You are archaeologists and researchers of the unknown, first and foremost. The covert aspect is that the Perimeter Agency in Titan Sector is no longer government sanctioned. Though you're not outlaws, you'll likely be competing with the Protectorate's Preservation Corps at the very least, if not the Concordat's missionaries, so discretion will be key.

Are we employees with a regular monthly income (as noted in the core rulebook), or are we private and paying the daily lifestyle rate? You will receive a regular weekly stipend, TBA

Want to say our characters met before our current employment Drohem? I'm picturing something like this: My guy had a precognitive seizure fit while using a soda vending machine in Shaddai's equivalent of "little Russia" and accidentally pulled the machine down on him (ironically fulfilling the precognitive prediction). Your guy pulled the machine off of him.

The other "origin grade" worlds in this region would be lush garden world Cradle, with its jungle cities and thinly veiled xenophobia, and Typhon, which features battle-scarred settlements in disputed territory.

You two may want to reassess your armor selection, especially since you two are the most likely to fight, as my low HP options are run or die.

"Armor
[...] Primitive armor, such as leather jack, metal mail, or metal plate,
is of limited use against advanced weaponry. Weapons of tech level
3 or higher ignore this armor." (SWN core rules, p. 35, col. 1)

That's our modern weaponry (Tech 3) just ignoring your armor AC outright.

Lowered AC is hard to get, and your Dex bonus stacks atop. As we start at Tech 4, and 1d6+400 credits, Woven Body Armor at AC 5 for $400 is pretty much the best. The other two are rather prohibitively expensive.

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll enough as it is for decent armor.  It's cool, he'll wait until we get our first big payday and get some armor.  He would rather have a good weapon over armor.  I appreciate the offer though. :)

:( You'll have to be our heavy providing suppressing fire for our getaway. Good thing you have solid range with the weapons. Our first major payday, or after our weekly/monthly salary, will likely have to go to at least one or two woven armors for the two of you. Until I go up an HD, armor is rather pointless for me.

I bought gear so we could survive out there and record info to better gather tech relics. I was thinking about trade goods or trade metals so as to bribe our way into good will. But I'm down to 50-ish credits, so we'll need to be extra cautious in our first few forays.

The extra Glowbugs are my way to Hansel and Gretel breadcrumb trail our way through dungeon areas. I'm seriously thinking about many more in the future. Would have liked a portabox to discreetly transport any tech, but that's for later.

I don't know how fast you'll go through Lazarus Patches and other med-gear, so I cannot say. Besides, I trust you two know what you are doing, so keep your money. It's all good. I'm going to update my character sheet in this post to reflect resources losts or gained.

Could have sworn it was originally Binov, but I must be mistaken. I'll use Blinov from here on out. :)

I was going to ask about that, but I just went with the sheet. :D

Oh, and I just realized when transferring character sheets that "Commander Aleksandr" sounds awesome. I may be using that more often!

Also! I was curious about some housekeeping things... Do you guys use an app or anything to keep track of your character sheet? Do you keep a paper copy or just a forum post somewhere that you edit/update like i saw drohem have with a link to his character sheet?

Hmm--can't really think of anything! :)

Also: Wiki is on its way! (http://wiki.rpg.net/index.php/SWN_On_the_Perimeter/Main_Page) Character sheets are up for your use, and I'll have planet info up soon.

And also also: I'm going to go ahead to the morning meeting, but first! What are the group's intentions for the night? Drive back to Base for a few ZZZs and come back in the morning? I believe you have the oxygen for it. You could find a room in Q-Town for the night, for a few credits.

(Either way, I'll have Denny meet you in the morning!)

Qweevil's

Would Denny have seen these things growing up on the farm's in Jessup? Do they commonly go around in packs or are they solitary? Or if Denny is familiar with them what would he know about?
Title: (Interest) SWN Summer Campaign
Post by: Mr. Kent on June 01, 2014, 10:27:51 PM
Qweevils move in packs/swarms. Two-dozen is the usual low-end of a swarm size, but packs have been recorded as big as fifty.

They're not so common in Jessup because the dome is rich enough to deploy a certain pesticide that keeps the vermin out of the surrounding farms. That isn't to say Denny hasn't seen one in person, but they're not as common as around Q-Town or the poorer domes. Denny's dad used to sell and repair the pesticide pumping device at his shop, so Denny would be familiar with how such gear is rigged. It's likely that Dad's old partner knows a chemical supplier.

I figure if Jolene needs anything in town, well she plans on returning in the evening to meet up with those boys from Asherah ;) Of course, if you think of anything you need before the Amity Farm, let me know Opa and I'll slip it in the timeline as I did with Blinov and Nia.

So what's everyone thinking so far? I am loving this and hope you are too. I'm feeling really motivated right now, so I'm reorganizing my notes and will have an updated map of Titan Sector soon. I'm also really psyched to delve into things like ships and factions in the near future.

Speaking of ships, your Perimeter Agency vessel is sort of a Schroedinger's Ship, with nothing truly finalized until you find occasion to leave Qetesh. The hull will be a Free Merchant, but the specs are up to you, so let me know what you might want.

(Also realized that Spanner or Modia would have to accompany you as your personal pilot until Denny levels up to Navigation 1--a detail that eluded me before! :D)

Denny's Father 's name was Trey 'Ox' Plowman, People called him   OX, because he was seen out in the fields working on equipment more than he was at home... Denny's mother Tara didn't like this much but she understood it was the business life... Realizing quickly that Trey wasn't very good at the Financial and Administrative side of running a business he partnered up with Rydell Lewiston, an accountant... What they didn't know is that Rydell had political connections to some of the ' Old Money' on Qtesh.... appprently he caught the Eye of one of the wealthy land owner's youngest daughter and they married... After Trey's accident when he died, it suspiciously came out that Upon an unexpected death, all business asset's are to be turned over to Mr. Lewiston, leaving Tara and Denny with nothing...

Maybe Jojo Rydell and Rydell Lewiston are distant-distant-cousins! :D Lewiston could've been named after his mother's maiden name, so if you climb far enough up the family tree they'd be connected...

The Wiki (http://wiki.rpg.net/index.php/SWN_On_the_Perimeter/Main_Page) has been edited with all sorts of goodness! Sector NewsNet, Jobs Listing, and Campaign Calendar will be regularly updated, and hopefully help keep straight some tidbits of info from way back.

Next I have an edited Titan Sector map (with all worlds) to go up, and a list of various infobits you've found about various worlds. (Atargatis=full of psychics. Want illegal cybernetics? Head to Humbaba! And so forth...)
