Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Arkansan on May 05, 2013, 09:33:53 PM
So with school wrapping up for the semester I have a lot more free time and I have been tossing around the idea for a massive dungeon in my head. I have been reading a lot of the articles out there about megadungeons and their design and have been particularly intrigued by the idea of a dungeon as a mythic underworld. I have never run this sort of thing before, I typically run games in a sandbox setting I have been tinkering with for a few years but I have got bored of it here lately.

At the moment I have no gaming group but I have the itch to run something and I would like to try my hand at play by post. I have wanted to run a play by post game for awhile now but I have never got around to it. So this is a general interest check to see if anyone is interested in playing in this sort of game with a GM who is new to play by post.

The system I have the most experience running is OD&D but I would be willing to branch out and run one of the retro clones, I also have wanted to run Dragons at Dawn for awhile.

I am still in the process of fleshing my idea out and building up the area around the dungeon so it would be a week or so before I would be ready to run anything. Again since I have no group at the moment I checking to see if anyone would be interested in playing before I even continue working on this.

Since I am still designing things I am open to input as to things potential players don't like to see.

I would definitely be interested, I've only got experience with Labyrinth Lord but would be willing to give something else a try for a megadungeon.  Also have no experience with play-by-post, but plenty with face to face play.

EDIT:  I don't like my PC to be invincible.  Apart from that, I'm easy.

I would be happy to participate and contribute to the game and new experience for those who haven't played in a PbP game before.  :)

Sounds like a fun game.
I am up for any rules I can get for free, from Mini Six to any of the clones.

Wow. I had forgotten that I had posted this, but I am still up for it. I just got done moving so give me a few days to get everything unpacked and find my notes and what not. I am good with any of the clones, say labyrinth lord, would that work for everyone?

Yeah, I'm cool with Labyrinth Lord.  :)

Ahh!  Thought you'd ditched this, I'm definitely still up for it, and love Labyrinth Lord. AEC or the basics?  I'm on British Summer Time, hopefully this won't cause problems?

I just downloaded the lot of LL I found on their site, so I am ready to go.

Post by: Arkansan on July 06, 2013, 04:46:12 PM
Lets just stick with the basic LL on this as I am not as familiar with the AEC. I am certainly still interested in running this I just had forgot that I had posted it in the hustle and bustle of moving.

I need to finish unpacking my gaming stuff because all of my notes are in packed in with it, should not take that long but just to play it safe and make sure I don't have you guys waiting on me I will say that I will be ready to begin play by Wednesday. In all honesty I will likely have everything squared away before then but I would rather overestimate than underestimate.

I don't see how the time difference should be too much of an issue but just to make sure everyone is in the loop I am on U.S. Central Time. Do you guy want to shoot for daily posting or go for a few specific days a week? I can do either but having a few set days a week might be easier for everyone.

I'm good with daily turn posting or Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or whatever you decide oh mighty Lord of the Labyrinth.

How shall we roll em up?
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Arkansan on July 07, 2013, 12:37:59 AM
Hmm, I would be good with Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, easier than posting everyday but often enough to keep the pace up. We should probably wait for everyone to chime in on that though. As to character creation, standard 3d6 in order.

How do we want to handle rolls? I trust everyone to make their own, but if anyone else is concerned I don't mind doing all the rolling. I am also open to any other ideas. I am new to play by post so I am not sure as to the best way to handle this.

I kind of like http://rolz.org/ for dice rolling.  If you like you can even make a room we can all access and we can see each other's rolls (though I keep forgetting the link for the H&H game I am in.)

I just made a room called "LL Character Roll Ups" for our use and I'm gonna go make my rolls and see what's he gonna be.

 Chugosh: 3D6 => 14
Chugosh: 3D6 => 10
Chugosh: 3D6 => 8
Chugosh: 3D6 => 12
Chugosh: 3D6 => 10
Chugosh: 3D6 => 11

Fighter? Hmm. maybe Elf?
Only the numbers seem to say Fighter more.

Chugosh: 1D8 => 3
Crap.  2 hp.
This will be brief.

Well thats pretty neat, we can use that for sure. Hmm good STR roll but bad CON, tough to say what to do with him. You could do a decent elf maybe.
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Chugosh on July 08, 2013, 02:19:09 AM
I went with Fighter.  Rolled crappy HP, but I'm willing to go with it.  I will now roll for his cash allotment and see if I can armor him enough to keep him alive past 1st level.

 Chugosh: 3D8*10 => 150
Not too bad at all.
I can buy banded armor (I assume like a roman lorica segmentata) a helmet and a shield for 105 leaving 45 for weapons and traveling gear.  Cool.

The elf might have been good, too, but the xp progress is so very slow so that decided it.

Sounds good, I look forward to seeing the finished character sheet. I dug out most of my notes last nights, I still need to flesh a couple of things out but we should be good to start Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. I would still like to hear from everyone on scheduling how often we post though just to make sure whatever we work out is most convienient for everyone.

Ouros is one of the four patrons of mankind. He is most often associated with order and justice, though he is often connected with medicine and prophecy as well. His sign is a pair of scales balancing a scepter and an outstretched hand. His followers have a well established network of temples with an intricate hierarchy. They often operate hospitals out of the temples as they consider good health of the people essential to public order. They are often legalistic believing that even an oppressive government is better than unmitigated chaos. At their highest mysteries the priests are taught to evaluate the natural rhythms and order of the universe in an attempt to divine the future. They believe that the chaos of the monstrous is a threat to proper order and must be kept in check. The church also sponsors several military orders.

The four patrons of mankind are the gods that are most often thought to be responsible for the creation of humans, each responsible for the humans of their respective regions. Ouros is the patron of the men of the north. Theologians in the civilized lands debate as to wether they are actually four different gods or aspects of one god despite some rather sharp differences in beliefs amongst the four cults.

STR 5
DEX 13
CON 11
INT 14
WIS 7
CHA 12

150gp

Not sure what to do here really-I'd have gone for a fighter but that strength kind of sucks.   I think it might have to be...halfling! (that's a personal first)  That way I'll get +2 for missile rolls.  I can live with a +5% prime requisite instead of +10%.

HP:  5

Happy with that!  I'll equip tomorrow, but in the meantime yes I am happy to start Wednesday.

Huh, I wonder why it sent your post to moderation? As to the number of posts just for management sakes I would say a minimum of one and no more than three. Of course I don't see why that couldn't be subject to change if we find that to be either too much or too little.

Two questions:

1) I've taken Gnoll as my extra language based on my INT stat, hopefully that's ok?  Of course happy to change it if not.

2) I still have a rather heavy 62gp left over, can I hire a bearer to carry a sack with my remainin gold in?

Post by: Arkansan on July 16, 2013, 11:03:54 PM
Essentially what I was thinking so far is that in the beginning there was a group of primordial beings that existed for untold ages. Eventually they warred amongst themselves, destroying the universe as they had made it. The aftermath of the melee was a sort of storm whose violence reshaped their physical remains into the unformed earth. The gods are the remnants of these primordial beings thoughts which were drawn to the remnants of their dying breaths. They then found their way to the earth, and began to shape it according to their individual tastes and personalities. When they acted in the world they became tied up in it and to a degree a part of it. They also created the sentient races to suit their tastes, fashioning bodies for them which drew smaller portions of the breaths of the dead primordials, thus giving them life.

Some of the gods are more powerful than others, with the weakest being no more than powerful local spirits. They are a mixed bag personality wise, ranging from benevolent to aloof. Essentially their personality reflects the original thought that animated them, so for instance one could reflect the infinite range of thoughts and feelings that the primordials may have felt in their final battle. One could for instance be a reflection of, say a final act of mercy or compassion or of a feeling if resignation.

The gods tend to be fairly consistent in their behavior at least. Other spirits are more chaotic and wander the stars doing who knows what, these I term outsiders. Some are down right evil and dwell in the great caverns below the earth, demons essentially though.

The gods don't tend to manifest themselves physically very often, preferring to act through their priesthoods. I am picturing that this may have once been different and a great cataclysm changed it.

Anyway, I guess I just sort of have you the whole cosmology in a nut shell. I don't know if that helps but I would be very interested in anything you come up with. If you do come up with something I would love to keep it as canon in the campaign world as I plan on using this one for a long time, if that would be okay.

Of course if you don't want to come up with something I perfectly understand and would be happy to do it. :)

Post by: Drohem on July 18, 2013, 11:46:51 AM
Anything I come up with will be just a re-hash of the Greek primordial beings so I would rather go with your own creation. :)

I just thought of a hook for Donovan:  Father Blind John has become terribly concerned with the safety of the town of Last Keep and the peoples dependent upon it, and so he wrote a letter to an old friend in the Church hierarchy explaining his concerns and the troubles of late.  Donovan has been sent by Blind John's friend, with the full Church sanction, to aid however he can.

What do you think?

In the interest of expediency, I updated my character sheet here with weapons purchased and some supplies, but still ready to role-play out such as purchases are subject to your approval. I wiped out my coin except for a small purse of gold.

Egads!  I hope that we don't encounter Mind Flayers at 1st level, LOL! :)

The last image is awesome sauce!

Baltron's Beacon does bring back some good memories!

LOL! Perhaps the Mind Flayer King will be your Boss nemesis within the temple ruins! No worries, I have your back!:cheerleader:

Baltron's Beacon brings back fond memories for me as well. I last ran it about 10 years ago and always enjoyed the sneak factor in approaching the fortress.

How are we handling rolls gentlemen? We can use the rollz site linked earlier but rooms made in it only seem to stay open for a certain period of time.  I would also be fine using the honor system, as I trust everyone here to play fair. Although I think we should note any rolls made in post. Suggestions, thoughts?
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: AndrewSFTSN on August 03, 2013, 12:01:29 PM
Yep, see my thoughts in the cheating thread about that.  Honour system is fine by me, I think the important thing is noting the roll (and modifiers) in the post, perhaps in a different font colour.  I'll probably be using rollz anyway as I often play at work (sshhhh).
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Drohem on August 03, 2013, 12:10:08 PM
I'll be using the website for my rolls.  It doesn't matter to how anyone else makes their rolls.  :)
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: pbj44 on August 03, 2013, 12:19:05 PM
In the past I have happily used https://dicelog.com/dice. It has a neat feature where you can make your roll and the results are instantly emailed to prevent any "fudging". Using this system we could make our rolls which would be transmitted with time stamp to any email address you decide. You would get an email like this:

Dice Roll Information:
----------------------

My bow shot at the Orc on the wall.

Dice Results:
-------------

Result of the throw of dice "1d20" :

8

We then enter our roll in-game for everyone's enjoyment and are good to go. Since the public and private results would match then there are no issues.

Another alternative is for each of the players to send you a "sheet" of "to hit" rolls and a sheet of "damage" rolls, say, 40 results per sheet. As you use the rolls just scratch them off. This keeps more of a story flow to our game log, so instead of:

"You hit the Orc for 5 points. He's still up though."

You can have:

"Your strike rips most of the Orc's face off, but somehow he twists off your blade and lunges for you again!"

Setting up an account is child's play and validation takes about 10 seconds. I have used the service for about 8 years with zero problems. Just my freely disregarded thought. I will go with the crowd.

That dice log site seems very cool, however I think we will just stick with the honor system if everyone is cool with it. As to posting roll results I was thinking that whenever an action is taken that requires a roll after the the action you could put the roll in brackets. For instance

I attack the orc (8).

Or something like that anyway.

Oh and if its ok I figured I would make initiative and surprise rolls for both sides.

Can Donovan save Ari if he gets a CLW spell off next round since he's at zero HPs?
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Arkansan on August 05, 2013, 08:12:02 PM
Sure. Lets say that at 0hp you are unconscious losing 1 hp every round, they can go down to negative half their constitution score before death rounded up. If that works for every one I am cool with it. Unless someone else has an alternate house rule they want to put forward?
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: pbj44 on August 05, 2013, 09:09:21 PM
Whoa, just checking in! Of course this sounds good to me! How long am I down?
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Arkansan on August 05, 2013, 09:15:19 PM
If Donovan's clw goes off, you may get up that round. Otherwise you loose 1 HP per round. You can go down as far as your half your constitution score rounded up. If the spell doesn't go off but they finish the fight they can stabilize you unti you heal naturally or the good Father can use CLW again.

This here is old school.
What is the loot and any evidence offa dis cultist?

And the HobGobs for that.

I'd say anything we cannot use and don't want to carry, we break (extra spears, hg armors etc)

Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: pbj44 on August 11, 2013, 09:01:11 PM
Facepalm!

The next cultist we meet is a nude man - err - I mean - A DEAD MAN!

We got lucky in that first encounter, but I think the way to go (at least until we are stronger) is to lead off with a strong volley of missile fire before we go in. Now that Aiden has a crossbow it should be a bit easier, but we should get Brogar something to shoot as well if fortune allows it.

I hope we hear from Drohem soon, but in the mean time I guess the good Father will be on auto pilot. Well I sorta had this pictured as an open game so, yeah another player is always good. I can roll you up a character and post it later tonight, or early tommorow. I have a few ideas about how to drop in another character. Fighter or thief?

Oh and I proably wont get an update posted on the game till later tonight or tommorow morning. I guess we can just keep moving until everyone else is in a position to post again I will just run them.

I don't have any of the first edition AD&D books anymore so I can't say for sure. The actual game is available for download, or there is a handy set of reference sheets online that someone did that has all the tables in the book as well as the equipment lists. Or you just tell what you want and I can look it up in the book for you.

Hmm, how exactly do you want to go about jumping in? I figured we could just say that you were on your own private expedition, we could have you start to descend the stair case as the other PCs are about halfway down. I figure we could just say you took a different route to the Halls and that is why they didn't run into you on the way there. But I am open to any other ideas.

--  Meet Charlie, an 'Adventurer'

Sorry for the delay again gents, I have been in the middle of a family crisis. My younger brother has been in ICU with a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain, and a broken leg. Needless to say that things have been crazy. He is out of ICU now so things are settling down. I will update the game tonight when I get home and gods willing we can resume a normal schedule.

Of course that assumes everyone is still interested, if not I understand, the schedule of this game has been a hot mess for a long while now.

Glad to hear it!

To be honest I am losing creative steam with the dungeon though, so many pauses in between work sessions have made my notes scattered and disjointed.

So my question to everyone is this would you prefer to press on with this game, or would you be ok with me starting a new one? A fresh start so to speak?

I totally understand if everone wants to carry forward with this game, we cartainly have invested some time in it. I just feel like I have learned a few things about running a play by post game, about pacing at least, that could lead to a smoother game with a fresh start.

Either way I am ok with, I just wanted to put it out there. :)

Can you give some idea of what the potential new adventure would be about? That would help me decide.
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Arkansan on March 13, 2014, 08:53:37 PM
Well I had a few possibilities in mind. All of which I envision running as a sandbox.

1. Post apocalyptic fantasy with some science fantasy thrown in. Think Barsoom, Almuric and the like with magic and what not. Think radium rifles, flashing blades, horrors grown in vats and ancient and poorly understood technologies that have begun to take on a religious significance. All the while the world slowly dies. Weird contrasts between the medieval and the futuristic.

2. A more traditional fantasy, set in a failing kingdom during what will eventually be known as the end of Mans dominance. Lots of petty nobles ruled by a weak kneed king, all the while the world becomes weirder, fey so to speak and humanoids of all shapes and sizes begin to run amok.

Anyway either of these settings I would run as a sandbox. I have a few ideas for starting hooks that could apply to either. The PC's could have been hired to map out a wild border land. Or they could be survivors of an ill fated caravan headed to find a fabled city of riches. They could also simple mercenaries hired to deal with the myriad problems of an incompetent noble. I have many more ideas for starting hooks and am open to suggestions, of course being a sandbox there would be no prime directive so to speak and anything that looked worth doing could be done.

I'm usually down for a post toasty.
The fall of mankind seems kind of cool apocalyptic as well.
Title: [Interest] Megadungeon Campaign
Post by: Arkansan on March 14, 2014, 12:26:36 AM
Yeah that is kind of the theme with both possible settings, the fall of man imposed order and a return to a sort of primordial chaos, though approached in different ways. Reading through the original D&D books whilst waiting in an ICU has sort of given me some visages of weird and chaotic takes on the implied setting which I am itching to get put to paper. Either way I think much fun could be had, however the vote turns out I will be happy to be gaming again.

Hi Arkansan, thanks for running the previous, for the small amount of the mega-dungeon we did explore I enjoyed it.

I think I'll sit out the next one though, as I'm not sure how much time I'll have free in the forseeable future - perhaps I could jump in at a later date if I find I'm able?

I'm glad that you enjoyed, I'm just sorry the schedule was such a train wreck. Of course feel free to jump in any time you want! I would be glad to have you back. I envisaged this as being an open game anyway, and with a sandbox set up it is very easy for people to drop in and out.

So as a group are we leaning toward option 1 or 2? I am fine with either, but to be honest I think one sounds a bit more interesting personally. I have some outline work done for both so as soon as we decide I can begin fleshing out the initial area, which should be able to finish over the weekend as I will have lots of downtime. So basically if we get a decision today we can start playing again Monday or possibly even late Sunday.

Sounds like everyone would be ok with option 1. I will start expanding my outlines and mapping tonight. I have lots of free time this weekend so I should easily be able to get a starting area up and running.

How does everyone feel about house rules? I was thinking of using Akrasia's sword and sorcery rules for M-U's and maybe a couple of other minor things. I am thinking of using swords and wizardry white box for this game, or possibly S&W core. That ok with everyone? I am pretty flexible here so its whatever but I was thinking of making a few changes to get a specific flavor.
