Title: [IC] Things To Do In Cadsandria When You're Dead
Post by: One Horse Town on December 12, 2013, 11:03:47 AM
So, you beat a hasty retreat from Pratts Landing on the Silver Skein islands because of [that thing that happened], taking the first ship you could get passage on. Considering the three factions of the Church of Poseidon that you were stuck in the middle of, a brave move, but one that paid off.

You travelled westward on the Sea of Five Winds aboard the Starfish for a week until you made landfall at a place called Oathcoomb. Fearful lest priests of Poseidon followed you, you headed inland, through Errands Row, where everyone pays for goods with small gemstones, ascending the Picardi Ridge which wends North and South for as far as the crow seems able to fly and over another week of travel, passed through Bravado Pass and found yourself in a small town that services the mining communities of the Viceroy Mountains – Cadsandria.

Talk about the backside of the world...

To the west, forest, Muster and then the Giant Lands, to the south, mountains and the backside of the backside of the world, the Duchy of Craghold, East, well eastwards leads towards the sea and possible problems because of [that thing that happened]. North is endless mountains (and somewhere, the town of Ladenhollow, home of smiths – oh, and cursed), and should you survive the peril, not to mention boredom, of that trip, to the areas around Lenap, where trails are harder to find than virgins in a brothel.

So, for the moment, backside of the world it is. It's not so bad, really. It has decent inns, decent merchants, and fabulous jewellers, should you be able to afford that sort of thing. It's quite lively, what with miners' spats, visiting caravans, the clanging weapon smiths, and the history lessons held each day at the Library of Time, but your money is starting to run out and you need some honest adventuring work.

Perhaps you'll find some notices near the criers pillar...

"Wagon lost and three dead as Demonettes attack near Muster. Cadsandrian Merchant's League boycott town."

"Ganessa Gnolls sighted near Errand's Row leads to Jasper shortage."

"History of Tlan in six lectures, starting tonight at the Library of Time."

"Duke's Regent in Craghall looking for bride for the young Duke."

"New caves found in Craghall mines. Foreman lost and equipment sabotaged. Miners strike."

"The Ghostwind strikes Ladenhollow as solstice approaches."

"Silk available for reasonable prices. See Lombold at The Furnace Inn."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm looking for 3 or 4  characters that have been together for a while. Strictly OSRIC.

Stat Generation: 4d6 drop lowest, arrange as you like.

Experience Points: 3000

Starting Money: Roll starting money and add 50 gps

Equip as you like with your starting money

Hit Points: Max at 1st level, roll afterwards

Alignment: I'm not interested in running for an Evil group

Feel free to come up with that thing that happened in Pratts Landing that led to your flight to Cadsandria.

I have the final word on who plays and who doesn't.

I won't be using a dice-roller. Feel free to do so yourself if you want to, but i'm presuming we're all adults here.

I'd prefer a reasonable pace of posting from the players. If we hit a section where combat or other rolls are needed, then if you're not around i may assign your rolls to other players until you are.

I see this as open-ended.

Will give this a shot. Played a face to face OSRIC campaign with Piestrio (one of the guys with a skeletor avatar on this site) and enjoyed it a lot, would like to play it again.

Sorry if this is jumping the gun, but with these kinds of games I like to give the stats time to come up with a character for themselves. I know you said "arrange as you like" but here's what I get with rolling 4d6 drop the lowest in order:
Str: 12 Dex: 10 Con: 9 Int: 10 Wis: 14 Cha: 10

I've got dwarves on the mind recently (am running a face to face Dwarf Fortress campaign) so maybe a dwarf fighter or possibly a human cleric.

Miron Earbeard had found himself in Pratts Landing after his last major adventure.  He had become with friends of some of the locals and was flush with coin from the job.  It was in Pratts Landing where he summoned his familiar, Tinenwor, a pseudo-dragon.  It had been nearly a year to the day since he first attempt to summon a familiar failed, and this time luck was with him and he was able to call a special familiar instead of the usual animals that answered a wizard's summons.  Miron had become a fixture in the Enchanted Centaur Tavern since his arrival to Pratts Landing, and good friends with the owner, Oraithlo Dreall.

It was Oraithlo who introduced Miron to the beautiful courtesan, Bourli Couller.  It was probably the fact that Miron never used her services that endeared him to her, and they often shared meals and conversations in the Enchanted Centaur Tavern.  Miron was never particularly devout to any of the gods, but, like most people in Pratts Landing, both Oraithlo and Bourli were members of the church of Poseideo.  Although he casually knew that there were three open factions of the church operating in Pratts Landing, Miron never really took the time to get involved with the church nor its politics.

However, when his friends both came to him with a serious job, Miron listened to them and took on the job.  Currently, the three factions of the church of Poseidon were peaceful and neutral toward each other.  This state of status-quo was held in place by an ancient treaty negotiated by the leaders of the church of Poseidon.  Bourli learned through one of her more talkative clients in the church of Poseidon that the ancient treaty that held the factions in check from open conflict was about to be sabotaged purposefully by one of the factions as a power play.  The client bragged about how he helped pen the plan for his church elder, and how he spelled it all out for his superior in a document.

Bourli brought this information to Oraithlo since he was a respected citizen and layman in the church of Poseidon.  She knew that she could not do anything meaningful with the information herself, but as a devote church member felt a responsibility to do something about the plot that was about to unfold.  They came to Miron to obtain the document from the offices of the priest at the second largest cathedral in town.  Miron's saving were dwindling fast staying the Enchanted Centaur Tavern and so he took the job.
Miron was able to obtain the document with the help of Tinenwor, but was seen by the church Templars as he fled the cathedral with it.  Luckily, Tinenwor's magical resistance aided Miron against the Templars' spells as he escaped into the streets of Pratts Landing.  Miron brought the document to Oraithlo, and then hastily packed his few belongings.  After a quick and quiet farewell to his friends, Miron made a hasty exit from Pratts Landing while looking over his shoulder for Poseidonite Templars.  He was nearly caught on the docks in the crapper, but after a harrowing chase, mad dash, and incredible jump onto the deck of the moving boat, he was able to effect his escape from Pratts Landing with nothing but the clothes on his back.

If you think an assassin, and a half-orc at that, might be problematic, I'm willing to go with fighter/thief or play something else. Hadn't even thought of alignment, honestly.

I actually preferred to play a monk, but OSRIC doesn't feature that class. Shame on you, OSRIC people.

Can I start with some first level henchmen? I'll roll for advertising costs to get them on board (and assume it happened as part of my backstory) and equip them out of starting cash if that's allowed.

Editing: looking in detail at the costs, I just can't cover them. Are there zero level hirelings available who will follow me into combat? Also thinking of hiring a hireling or two with animal handling skills.

Sorry for being an annoying rules lawyer but I don't think you're accounting for the costs of casting Find Familiar twice. That should cost precisely all of your money. Still, I think that a psuedo-dragon is worth all of your money.  They're damn good familiars.

I also believe that specialization/double specialization are optional rules, not default OSRIC rules.

Edit: I think I'm going to roll with a human cleric, I'm 5'6" and weigh 212 pounds so I suppose asceticism isn't on the table.

Copying Drohem's format, many thanks. Will buy stuff when I figure out about hirelings and animals. Am thinking about getting maybe a porter, a 0-level mercenary or two and someone who knows how to care for animals (maybe dogs and/or sheep).

Oh a few more things for my shopping:
-How much does honey cost? I'm going to be buying a good bit of honey.
-Is any alcohol stronger than wine available? Anything strong enough to light on fire? If so I want to know how much it costs as I'm buying some.
-Are we usually any background professions or anything of the sort? If so I'd be happy to roll randomly or choose a background as a (religious) musician if I have any choice in the matter, in which case I'll buy me a sistrum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sistrum

===  Appearance  ===

A tubby black man with a cherubic face, Yared the Lesser is usually seen in a spotlessly clean but plain black cassock with his hair covered by a tight-fitting hood. However, while performing religious ceremonies he removed his cassock and displays his that has been eyed a brilliant sun-yellow and trimmed neatly into a solar halo.

Yared's holy symbol is an eyeless lion head surrounded by a solar halo.

===  Deity  ===

Yared the Lesser serves the King in Splendor, a lion-headed solar deity whose priests claim will one day slay Night forever so that the world is bathed in eternal summer:

The Lion in Splendor went down through the gates of darkness and the arteries of the earth. He saw the black water of the Sunless Sea, rise up, bubbling and boiling. But he commanded the Woman’s hound to lap at the water and the Lion walked on with dry feet and the hound laps still, his bitch crying in darkness for its mate. But as the Lion passed the hound’s teeth tore away his mane.

The Lion in Splendor went down through the gates of fire and their burning glow. Enter it and you die, see it and you burn. But he seized the Woman’s dragon and cast her contorted to the ground and she gnawed at the rock of the underworld and the Lion walked on with head unbowed and the dragon gnaws still and breathes flames no more. But as the Lion passed the dragon’s claws tore away his hide.

The Lion in Splendor went down through the gates of smoke and heard the chants and calls of witchcraft. Who taught the frightening ugliness of these lies? But he called the Woman’s iron bull and its snorts cast away the mists and vapors and the Lion walked on free of sorcery and the iron bull snorts still and treads upon the wicked. But as the Lion passed the bull’s horns pieced his eyes.

Then the Lion in Splendor was without mane, hide or eyes and all that was left of him was a blind man lost in the place of darkness and consuming fire. The terrible Woman locked his hands with manacles and placed every temptation before him but he was a king still, the King in Splendor, and denied them all. And, as morning came, he tore his chains and took up the slaver’s whip and the Woman tore clumps of hair from her head as he ascended into the sky, the Lion in Splendor once more.

Darkness cannot be measured by light. The consuming fires do not light the house of gloom and the waters of the Sunless Sea have no sparkle. In darkness creatures grow and form and harbor malice in their minds. The children of darkness are nothing, but the children of light stay. The house of evil is nothing and its consuming fires die. Its sorceries die and end and have no place in the eternity of light. They come to nothing. The generations of light will stay forever. The words of light will rise and illuminate the world in everlasting light.

Yared's deity is influenced by the Gnostic concept of the Demiurge, Mandaeism, Sufism, Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, ancient Egyptian/Babylonian religion, and Azor Ahai from A Song of Ice and Fire mostly by throwing bits at the wall and seeing what sticks. Priests of the King in Splendor are famous for schisms and factional disputes and their temples are lighthouses, even the ones located far from the sea.

In statues (especially on the top of said lighthouses) the King is depicted either as: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d2/Lion-faced_deity.jpg/150px-Lion-faced_deity.jpg or as a well-muscled human male with a blind lion's head with broken manacles in one hand and a slaver's whip in the other.

Hope it isn't an imposition on your worldbuilding for me to invent my own deity, I'd be perfectly fine (would prefer it actually) if my deity is completely foreign to these parts.

If not, I'll have Yared sign onto one of you pantheon.

===  Background  ===

To be developed. In general Yared is pleasant around unbelievers, hates undead and nocturnal creatures with (literally) a burning fire and tends to be manipulative and controlling to any converts he happens to make.

Damn, I'd have to download OSRIC -- and all I got is Sword & Wizardry on the iPad. I really don't want to miss out on the six part lecture on the History of the Tlan.

How about I work as someone's "Nodwick" low-level hireling who gets vacation days? I'll throw down a 3d6 straight down stat line, race, class, appearance, & alignment, and let you all fuss kitting up its 'build'.

Well that was easy.

Iowain, the mediocre medic.

Human male. Cleric. Neutral Good.
5' 7", 132 lbs., dirty blond hair, dark brown eyes, prone to pleurisy -- takes to warm clothes to keep off the chill, smells of liniment.

(left to own devices, favors the Protect from Heat/Cold spell)

STR 9, DEX 4, CON 5, INT 6, WIS 9, CHA 12

if skills are used: read/write, knitting, herbalism, etiquette.
throws a mean afternoon tea, amiable, funny, & discreet.

If OHT says yes, handwavium the rest, or whoever employs me can stock the rest.

Would be happy to have that guy as an acolyte of my cleric but really OSRIC character creation isn't much more complicated than Swords & Wizardry, most of the added complication is DM-side stuff. Would be willing to help you through it if you want.

Make the assassin a Neutral alignment and only have his assassination chance versus monstrous humanoids? We could call him a slayer instead.

If we can't manage that, i'm quite happy to keep that roll for the character when he's next able to cast the spell (and have 100 gps scrubbed off for the failed attempt). Maybe the failed attempt tipped him off as to what his best possibility is. ;)

Make the assassin a Neutral alignment and only have his assassination chance versus monstrous humanoids? We could call him a slayer instead.

I love kitbashing!

Half-orc monster hunter is a great concept! I've played a similar character, a half-orc ranger in a D&D 4e game, and I'm obviously fond of the idea. Do you think we could work some sort of bushcraft or wilderness survival ability into it?

Or we could do a bounty hunter. Maybe we could substitute the assassination table for a chance to paralyze or incapacitate? And throw in some sort of tracking or information gathering ability.

In any case, if it's too much trouble, we can just default to fighter/thief, or plain old fighter.

Looks great!

No fixed plans as to dieties to be honest. Wilderlands defaults to a weird mix of Greek and made-up stuff, so yours fits in fine.

No objections at all.

4 is a manageable number of players over tut net, so we'll go with this.

Sorry for so many questions, just a few things:
-How are you going to rule on 0-level hirelings and combat? I've had some DMs treat them just like henchmen and have them tag along and some who have them refuse to go into dangerous areas. Would like to hire some extra muscle to go into combat with me and henchmen are waaaaaay too expensive. Hell, I'd be willing to hire a slew of noncombatant NPCs just to give enemies a more target rich environment and have them be less likely to target me (basically poor man's mirror image).
-Does high high proof booze exist? I'm looking for Everclear-style grain alcohol. If so, how much does it cost?
-Cost of a pint of honey? I have cunning plans.

Quote from: Daztur;716478Sorry for being an annoying rules lawyer but I don't think you're accounting for the costs of casting Find Familiar twice.

Well, I was figured the failed roll was in the past but I fully planned on paying the cost once, but I just forgot when I was making up the character.  Also, I figured that OHT would rule one way or another on the weapon specialization.

Quote from: One Horse Town;716572I'm fine with weapon specialisation.

OK, cool by me.  I'll pay the 200 GP for both castings now.  If it's cool with you, and for the sake of game world decorum, Miron will start the game with literally the clothes on his back and no other equipment.  He is seriously down on his luck and willing to take any job at this moment, LOL. :)

As long as Iowain is stocked with enough creature comforts to stave off pneumonia, which almost killed him as a child and left his stats stunted, he's OK.

Not so much the roughing it camping sort, more of the turns base camp into domesticity sort. Would likely be offering side products and services of liniments, knit wear, and hand wash & block set drying of knitted clothes on the side when in towns. Also likes a pack mammal when traveling to carry said comforts, and provide another warm body just in case.

Drohem, fine with me.

On hirelings, depends what you're doing whether they will put themselves in danger or not. Chances are they are the look after the horses, help with moving treasure kind of guys.

Alchemists sometimes use something with a high alcohol content, but getting a pint of it is expensive. 4 GPs per pint. Let's just call it fire water.

Lets call a pint of honey 3 sp.

We need The Butcher to decide on his character and for Opaopajr to flesh out his. Maybe one of you guys could help him out?

Something to be getting on with, if you fancy it, is agreeing on what happened in Pratts Landing that led to you hiding out about 700 miles away. The only input from me is that it's got something to do with the church of Poseidon - which is currently suffering a 3 way schism.

Oh, I did that in Miron's background for him individually.  However, I take it that would like it better if we fled Pratts Landing as an established group rather than individually coming to Cadsandria?

Post by: Drohem on December 19, 2013, 01:37:45 PM
If we're already an established group, then perhaps we expand upon this kernel...

As part of the increasing tensions between the three factions of the Church of Poseidon, the church actively worked to stamp out any other religions in Pratts Landing and control the town completely.  In pursuit of this religious expulsion, priests of all other gods were branded heretics and being persecuted for their beliefs.

Caught up in this sudden power struggle and religious witch hunt as priests of the King in Splendor, both Yared the Lesser and his acolyte, Iowain, became officially marked for death as outlaws. Also, as known and established associates of the religious heretics, both Kazmak the half-orc and Miron Earbeard the half-elf became wanted men as well.

It was through luck and friendly contacts that the group was able to effect its escape from Pratts Landing literally minutes before being set upon by Poseidonite Templars and possibly captured.

Fell deathly ill from pleurisy progressing into pneumonia as a child. The fever nearly killed him, but also ended up saving his life. The warmth and radiance of the sun figured heavily on Iowain's fevered delusions, and thus a sense of calling towards the church, celebrating the King of Splendor, conqueror of cold and winter.

Stunted from the traumatic illness, and chased by repeated pleuritic bouts, his childhood seemed to end early. Living cautiously with a sense of joyous martyrdom Iowain joined the King of Splendor seminary just before massive persecution. It all makes sense to him, like the fall into winter before the triumph of the sun. He does not expect to see the glorious return bodily, but among the church triumphant. Meanwhile he seeks to shelter and comfort those exposed from the coming cold for as long as his borrowed time grants.

What's so hard about sitting in on a six part lecture? ;)

Anyway, given the power differential in backgrounds now, it makes more sense to keep things this way. Besides, Iowain has little reason to go dungeon crawling per se; he can putter around as a domestic and get paid just as well anywhere. But as a camp hand, I'm sure there'll be plenty of adventure at hand to keep the bivouac safe while the party has gone crawlin'.

===  Appearance  ===

===  Deity  ===

===  Background  ===

Not so long ago a heresy began spreading through the Golden Realm, as they so often do. Some priests decided that the traditional rubies should be removed from statues of the King in Splendor as providing eyes to the blind god was a mockery and because do you know how much rubies cost?

One of the leaders of this heresy was a priest named Yared who stirred up the common folk and brought the cataphracts of the inquisition down on their heads. Yared's nephew, an overfed youth known as Yared the Lesser, was one of the few who made it out of the country alive.

Since then Yared the Lesser has been wandering these lands spreading the blinding light of the sun to all those who live in darkness and telling all to make sure that no rubies are ever placed in the eyes of statues as that was the great cause that his noble uncle died for.

Paying for food really blew a hole in my finances but being able to carry a barrel of lamp oil around is important. Having that and Resist Fire should be fun. Poor man's fireball...

Only being able to afford so little armor is painful, but I like having the animals and hirelings.

I wanted to buy a tent but no money. However I do have an ox and a cook so I can have a bbq whenever I want, which I think is well worth it.

I'm assuming that my little band are all survivors from the heretics that fled my homeland with my uncle before the inquisitors caught up to us. Our homeland is sort of Medieval Ethiopia with a bit of Byzantium and legends of Prester John thrown in so we'd look roughly similar to modern Ethiopians (except my character being strangely short and fat).

Kazmak, male half-orc, 3rd-level Bounty Hunter (modified Assassin)

Alignment: Really, really torn between Chaotic Neutral and True Neutral.

AC: 5 (studded leather + Dex bonus)

HP: 13 (Invisible Castle roll (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4339391/))

Str 14, Dex 16, Con 10, Int 13, Wis 10, Cha 6.

Gear: Studded leather armor, daggers (2), longsword, light crossbow, belt quiver with 24 bolts, backpack, bedroll, waterskin, 7 days of standard rations, 2 sets of manacles, 100' of hemp rope, thieves' tools, cloak, gloves, heavy boots, flint & steel, hooded lantern and 3 pints of oil.

Money: 18gp and 5sp (from 170gp starting funds; IC roll (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4339401/))

Special abilities: Backstab (+4 to hit and x2 damage from behind), capture or incapacitate foe (on a surprise attack; base 65%, -5% for every two levels/HD of the target), disguise, tracking (90% in the wilderness, 65% in cities or dungeons), thief abilities (CW 80%, FT 25%, HN 10%, HiS 20%, MS 20%, OL 30%, PP 35%, RL 1%)

Kazmak was raised amongst a particularly unsavory clan of slavers and kidnappers, which was eventually slaughtered in a gang war the rocked his home city's underworld.

As one of the few, if not the sole survivor, he put his people-taking skills to a slightly more wholesome use by moving from frontier town to frontier town collecting bounties on everything from petty criminals to dangerous monsters.

He usually follows contracts to the letter, and all else being equal, prefers to deliver his marks alive; he'll kill if he has to, but he views assassination with distaste.

When not disguised, he's a short, squat half-orc with a proeminent jaw, slightly jutting canines and a broken nose. He keeps his hair very short and bears a small scar over his left eye. He's not the most sociable member of a notoriously unsociable trade, but he's easygoing enough when among trusted comrades (a rarity these days) and a bit too fond of his ale.

He was tracking down a mark in Pratt's Landing when he mistakenly broke into the house of a priest of Poseidon (who knows which faction) and hastily threw his lot in with the current outfit to leave town ASAP.

Are we good?

Still need to know if 1st lvl saves are different for clerics.

Also need an accounting of my purchased equipment. I have 2e equip list, is that good enough?

(Yet, considering I am so not frontline material that I'll likely stay in camp, this may not be so pressing.)

The saves for a Cleric are the same from 1-3 levels.

Thanks again, Drohem! If you can, take a look at my p. 4 Character Sheet so far to see if it is copacetic.

Anyway, I do so look forward to the Tlan lectures. Maybe I can get some baby clothes commissions and multitask while there. I wonder how entrenched Iowain is by now among the elderly community?

(Ooh! And I have to talk to Lombold at The Furnace Inn. It's rare for me to work in raw silk yarns.)

Yeah, looks good.  You have a zero weight adjustment for your STR score.  Studded leather reduces him to a 9 MV.

It's up to OHT, but I'm pretty certain that AC caps at 10 and doesn't go above it.

Well, if AC caps at 10 and DEX penalty -3 would undo everything from studded leather (AC 7), there'd be no point in wearing it or anything lighter. I will need OHT's ruling on that, otherwise I can save some more money for yarn.

So, there you are, staring bleary eyed at notices nailed to the pillar in the central square of Cadsandria.

The notices are -

Having been in town for a while, you know that news posted here is most often out of date - brought by merchant caravans from towns that are many days travel away.

Still, looks like there are several interesting things to investigate.

The crier has an abode adjoining the square and he can normally be relied on to flesh out these notices quite nicely...

[once you've decided on what to investigate i'll start a new IC thread to get it going - complete with funky name]

Yared's purse gapes like an empty mouth with only a few gold spots to relieve its dark gloom. If he didn`t get his hands on more soon he'd have nothing but an ox to eat.

"My friends, we have certainly had our fill of the giggling menace back home," Yared's servants nod glumly, gnolls were well known in the Golden Realm. "And as for the rest, I`d far rather investigate the contents of a lady`s skirts than those of a cave. I say we have a word with this Regent."

Kazmak stops playing with a dagger and looks up. "Find the lil' Duke him a bride, all right. Did plenty of bride findin' back with me folks. Can't say I like it – rather be taking some gnoll heads, Ares be my witness – but if the price is right... What say the rest o' ye?"

The half-elf raises a single eyebrow with a wry smile, and Minron says, "I've brokered unusual deals in the past, but never securing a bride.  Given our current circumstances though it seems like easy coin.  I'm in."

Once it's up, if everyone can re-post their character in their first post in the thread, we're good to go.]

Feel free to natter among yourselves here until i post the IC thread tomorrow!

Yared is beginning to get animated and nods at Kazmak. "Well, gnolls are a good sight prettier without their heads, I won't deny that, but with what happened to Miron the poor changeling was left without so much as a rock to bath their heads with so perhaps something with a bit softer hide than gnolls would be a good place to start.

We need to find a good girl who'll walk through fire for this Duke and then light one up and send her through. The King will take care of the rest."

Yared fingers his head head in a sunburst holy symbol and looks up at the sun. "I might even be feeling a bit of prophesy coming on."

OOC: rough plan, we investigate what the Duke's Regent is looking for. Then I prophecize that the Duke bride will be able to walk through a bonfire unhurt. Then we send a girl through a nice big fire unscathed thanks to my Resist Fire spell (makes people completely immune to normal fires for a while) and with some showmanship we impress the Duke.

Miron chuckles with an amused tone as he absently rubs his chin, "yeah, it might work."

Looking to Yared, he asks honestly, "but, you're sure you can make this girl fireproof?  We'd be in a sticky situation if she barbecues before her groom's eyes no doubt."

Finishing a row and stopping his seemingly incessant knitting needles, Iowain beams to the rest a smile difficult to see from standing in the bright light between them and the sun. :) "That does sound like enough to convince a Baron, my reverend tutor. But perhaps wouldn't it be better for us to collect information first? The King's light might shine upon a path unforeseen."

"I fear I may not be all that inspiring of confidence to a man so important. But maybe I can make myself useful here. The elders of this surrounding area must know much, and I feel I can be a good listener." Resuming his work, running off purls upon a very tiny bootie, Iowain tails off, "Besides, there are a few more things I wanted to do in Cadsandria..."

OOC: posted character sheet to the other thread, I'll keep the IC convo going here to not gum up the front page with blather.

IC:

Yared smiles indulgently at Iowain and Miron. "If her heart is pure then the King in Splendor will surely save her if not, well, cremation is a method of burial with much to recommend it," the priest says with a shrug.

"But, yes, let us investigate the matter first. It might also be good if the Duke Regent were not overly informed of any collusion between the bride finders and the bride testers. That might lead to unfortunate misunderstandings which might get in the way of the wedding feast."

At that point Yared begins rambling on wedding feasts from back home and the best methods of barbequing whole oxen, which mostly seem to involve honey marinades.

OOC: as far as I can tell you can drop the girl into a blast furnace and as long as Resist Fire has been cast on her she'll be fine for the duration.

Miron sniffs his shirt with a miserable look and says, "well, if we're going to try and impress a noble into giving us a job, then perhaps we should wash and brush our clothes."

Passing his gaze over Kazmak, the half-elf looks to Iowain and Yared and asks with a smile, "do you happen to have a sliver of soap?  Can I borrow you horse brush for my clothes?"

Kazmak gives Miron a pointed, ferine look, followed almost immediately by a wry grin, and silently goes back to playing with his dagger.

After a few seconds' worth of silence, he suggests, "Don't this Regent person have people takin' care of this sorta thing? I mean, if he be a nice tidy smellin' of flowers nobleman, I don' think he'd come down in person to hire the likes a' the sorry penniless bunch of us all."

Kazmak drains what little ale is left in his mug. "There must be a servant of some sorts scouring the alleys and ale-houses for the rascals and rapscallions the likes of us, assuming this place don't have guilds and gangs taking care a' this sorta thing already. And they may be mighty displeased to see a buncha out-of-town folk doing their thing, if you know what I mean. Specially such a rich fine job as getting a Duke-bride."

Miron chuckles softly with pleasure in seeing that his silent barb hit its mark accurately, and says to Kazmak with a straight face continuing his innocent fun, "well, I'll defer to your vast experience in such matters, Kaz."

"Respectable Kazmak, you are correct. I gather we would look rather out of the norm, especially as outsiders, to speak nothing of our habits. What marquis would give audience to such an inconsiderate motley?" Blushing visibly at the thought, Iowain crosses himself to abjure misfortune. Looking guiltily for failing to be of even basic use, "I take your meaning and shall work very hard to understand the mores and manners of our hosts."

Turning to Miron, "Perhaps a visit among the baths and laundry is in order. I should have some copper to share for you to freshen up." Pausing, looking up from sudden inspiration, "Maybe I can then take the opportunity to ply my herbal knowledge to see what they need in the way of soaps, lotions, and oils. And few compare to me when drying delicates and knits. I am righteous with a hot iron!"

Iowain closes his eyes, thinking of the moist warmth of steam and unconsciously takes a deep breath. More than once it opened his plugged lungs to healing expectoration. "A domestic job around here might be just the key for me to embed and gather information."

Yared seems pleased that his acolyte had found a way to get the elf cleaned up, dung-fired sweat baths had always been good enough for him but perhaps not what the changeling was used to.

"Yes, of course, we must gain the trust of the locals. I've not often rubbed shoulders with Dukes but I think I can win the hearts of the common people who that they will cry out for whichever girl we select. And let us make sure that it is a sweet girl with a pure heart, I would not have the Duke being lead astray, there is enough darkness in these lands as it is."

Suddenly, Kazmak seems concerned. "Dukes ain't in the habit of marryin' any pretty milkmaid off the fields 'cuz he took a fancy to her eyes. They marry because of dowries an' lands an' alliances an' such. Bet you a gold to the copper that the Regent's already thinkin' of some high-and-mighty blue-blood girl living inside a castle and surrounded by men-at-arms, and wants us to either do some persuadin' or --" here he breaks that wry, fanged grin of his "bride findin' the way me folks and I used ta do it".

Kaz turns around, yells some Orcish expletive at the serving-wench and points at his empty mug before turning back to his comrades. "Putting on a mummer's farce with fire an' sech be a fine idea but if I was Regent? Could care less about what the dirty rabble thinks it's best for the lil' Duke and the duchy I was runnin'."

"In any case, tough job. We should charge good. Ye know, her weight in gold or somethin'."

Post by: Drohem on December 24, 2013, 10:58:06 AM
Miron nods in agreement with Kazmak's assessment and sighs before saying, "perhaps one of you can see your way to lending me twenty gold as a short-term loan?  I will pay two gold interest on the loan no matter what, and I will pay another two gold if it takes longer than a month to pay you back.  It should be enough to purchase a sword and armor, either leather or a gambeson.  I am afraid that kaz's is right and that we may run into... mischief on this job.  Common folk like us always end up on the bottom of any noble business."

"Well, it is from my meager funds which were to start my life among the religious order. But as everything we knew has been overturned, who knows when Yared and I will return. My education, and very life, is in the hands of His Warming Embrace -- as I always understood it would be," Iowain starts to take on that familiar beatific look at the thought of surrendering to grace. "Of course I will lend you 20 gp for which to defend yourself, though I pray that it may not come to that. The King does not leave unclad those faithful to him, and likewise dear companion in our exile, how can Yared and I not do the same?"

OOT: I will tally 20 gp of my favors/in kind into a loan for Miron.

The half-elf bows genuinely with flourish as he says with a warm tone, "you are generous and a kind man, my friend.  I am in your debt.  If you ever should have need to call upon my sword, I will be there."

Tinenwor flaps his wings and regains his balance from Miron's bow with a screech and squawk.

faster bookkeeping than writing out "gp/sp/cp" all over and doing conversions.

(unless you are interested in exchange rates and non-base 10 denominations! it'd be a hoot to work off six pences and pieces of eight -- and then convert it to drachma and shekels!)
:)

Oh, and it's also a breakdown of expenses, with unlisted items rounded to what I thought would be its nearest equivalent. Each related grouping has a subtotal as well, for easier summation.
