This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dive Bar C

Alric

She stiffens reluctantly and hesitates an answer. "Oh you know, how life takes you where you did not expect. It's how I ended up here." Relaxes back into holding your arm, "Sometimes you miss the little things you thought were boring when younger."

"Time and choices can take us away as much as travel. But you know that, I guess." Fingers her mugs rim absently. As her finger circles back she adds again low, "Except you can travel back to a place, not a time."

"Hey, wanna learn a dance? I'll be easy on you."

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Path Up to the Downtown Claims, @ 2 Miles Out

Caden & Hanalee

Taking advantage of the delay from the old man and donkey, you amble up the path afterwards as a mask to your activities. The path passes over a wavy ridge, and the old pair must be over it ahead of you. As you crest the undulation, been taking the mountain upward at an angle since the town's edge, you come to a vista of the Old Graveyard.

You can see why it was the choice for Livonia's last resting place, it is a beautiful view, especially with this sunset. You can see the Basin stretch before you to the East, a nice copse of junipers lower down the mountain past a sharp drop off, and a meadow expanse of wild flowers between the path and that short cliff. In the middle of those wild flowers it lies, the Old Graveyard and its worn wood grave markers — with a conspicuous, tall, stone monument in its center.

Light's going to fade soon. You don't see the grim man in the distance anymore, but you can guess his tracks, for a little while at least. Perhaps he is that far ahead. The old man with the donkey is nowhere to be found, though, which is odd. They should be on the path within sight distance of this ripple's crest.

OOC: Gotta resolve light issues soon. Also will need Tracking (Survival or Disadv Perception). Stealth will be useful, but you both are not sure when. You feel a bit unprepared and at a tipping point, but it is a beautiful spot to find yourself as such.

Mr. Kent

"Hey...I think he's going that way!" Hanalee suggests.

(Rolled 16 in the diceroom, trying to use Survival to track...)

Old Graveyard

6 PM going on 7 PM

Hanalee can make sense of the trail dust to recognize the grim man's recent prints. They continue on up the trail, to the next rise... and the mountain's peaks are cutting short your daylight. Nearest dry wood is some of the old grave markers. The nearby brush is not as dry, and often oily for a pungent, smoky light, bad for stealth.

Caden nods at Hanalee "Right then, I'll follow your lead. I have a feeling the fool is going to need help despite what he thinks."

OOC: You do have to decide whether to hurry or prepare, as you have (if you had to guess) about until the end of this trough by walking before the twilight will obscure your tracking significantly. And after that, darkness follows soon from the peaks' shadows.

You and me both, so much for waiting until morning before going to the graveyard. ;)

Artifacts of Amber

"Sure enough if you can put up with my clumsiness" Alric smiles and stands taking her hand.

He avoids any further talk of separation. He wiles the night away with her enjoying himself before setting out again on the hunt.

OOC - fade to night.

Mr. Kent

Hanalee rushes ahead. "Let's get to him quickly!" she says quietly but urgently.

(OOC: I'm guessing you mean hurry vs. prepare weapons--in which case, Hanalee believes its more important to actually reach the man and figure the rest out later...)

"Right" Caden whispers. He will follow Hanalee moving as quickly as possible while still remaining stealthy.

OOC: Fair question. I am noting the tension between running v. light prep v. stealth, which effects movement rates. Running is 400' while Stealth is 200'. Normal is 300'.

Light is fading fast, as it is Dim Light already. Dim Light gives Disadv. to Wisdom (Perception)... and by extension Survival: Tracking, as you are using it as sight based.

Darkness is coming. Darkness creates Heavy Obscuration, and thus the condition Blindness. Blindness auto-fails ability checks that require sight, gives Adv. to attackers against you, and gives Disadv. to you against attackers.

The choice here to spot the grim man is:
risking running across this trough, and thus discovery, before it goes dark vs.
risking being cautious, missing grim man, and getting caught in the dark vs.
risking prepared lighting for regular travel, and thus possibly missing him -or- discovery.

Any additional clarification wanted? :)

OoC: Isn't one of these thrillseekers a Halfling with Darkvision?

Edit: Nope! Typical Humans jeez. Why is there no Rogue in this party? Hanalee is trying to be one so I'm left wondering why she didn't actually take the class?

OOC: They're fine. They are making valiant choices in the face of danger. I'm loving how tenaciously they are grabbing this bit and turning it into a thing! GMing is a bit like fishing...

That reminds me, encounter tables. Thanks, Marleycat! :D

edit: Also Darkvision 60', though useful, is not all that powerful. That just ups darkness within 60' to Dim Light and thus Light Obscurement. That just means closer surprise range, and other animals and creatures have other Keen Senses, as per the .pdf you pointed out for me. See, the GM incorporates your suggestions! :)
