This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Zwiehander, for someone Not familiar with Warhammer; but familiar with D&D?

Asshat McBitchnugget's hefty Zweihander tome adds some interesting stuff and ideas to poach, but the system itself looks like a hot mess. Maybe it plays better than it reads, but to me, I couldn't see a reason to switch out from Warhammer Fantasy 1e. Especially when you delve into the treasure trove of WFRP 1e ideas from years of Warpstone magazine.

If someone wanted to play Warhammer today, I can't speak for the current edition, but based on what I've seen Shadows of the Demon Lord seems to be that sweet spot between D&D and Warhammer that promises grimdark heroics with good rules. I've not yet played SoDL so I can't speak to actual play, but the reviews have been excellent. I consider it one of the only Kickstarters I regret not backing.

Arkansan

Can't say much about the system, it looks okish. With WHFRP 1st edition being available on DrivethruRPG and thus easily printed I don't really see much of a reason to play it. Besides that I refuse to support it because Daniel Fox is a colossal douche bag, I'd sooner drink bleach than give that fuck head a single red cent.

Ok?  I'm not familiar with the creator.

Shadow of the Demon Lord is pretty great. I played in a short campaign up to 2nd level (you start classless at level zero). It strikes a good balance between grit and accessibility. Rules medium (on the lighter side), and really high lethality (compared to 5E, though not quite to the same extent as AD&D).

Spambotted the damn game on what felt like every forum.
Doxxed people who called him out on his poor behavior.
Doubled down and started weaponizing cancel culture to get the consultants removed from 5e D&D credits out of spite.
And more I probably mercifully havent seen.

And his games a blatant rip-off of WHFRP.

The game is pretty good despite DF's abrasive faux-SJW marketing warfare. He is the poster child of the outrage brigade only because he convinced the OB he looks good on the poster.

The game is a generic grim-dark thing without a real setting so you can play it in various settings of your choice. I was really excited about it in the beginning but DF's behavior just made it all "meh" for me.

Yeah that was the bummer for me, I was excited about it early on but after all of his bullshit I just can't bring myself to buy it.

Snark Knight

Fuck off Daniel.

In all seriousness, if I wanted to play WHFRP 2E I've got all the content I need for that game. I had given Zwiehander some thought until every other thread vaguely about a fantasy RPG was vomited upon by the endless spam from the creator. That it actually worked out in favour only solidified not buying it, as well as it's brazenness at being Warhammer with the serial numbers barely filed off. Besides, if I want to run something different to 2E I'm very happy with the previously mentioned Shadow of the Demon Lord as it's a genuinely good system with considerable support from it's creator. I would look into that instead if you're after a dark fantasy toolbox.

Runequest or Drakkar och Demoner or of course the original Warhammer RPG all do it better. Especially since Warhammer 'borrows' the Broo from Runequest.

He's responsible for efforts to remove the names of contributors to D&D 5E, namely the PHB?  I didn't realize he was the source of that mess.  Why would he want to be a phallus like that?  Envy?  Jealousy?  That speaks very poorly of him.

After reading the PDF, I had no desire to play it and instead got out my WHFRP book and started working on a possible campaign. As already stated in the thread, since you can get WH, I see no real reason to play this clone. Sort of like how I'll probably never play OSRIC or Labyrinth Lord anymore since AD&D and B/X are so accessible now.

Don't bother with Zweihander; you can get 1e Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play as a .PDF and have it printed on demand. Same for 2e.
