This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Legacy of Kain getting an official TTRPG adaptation via Mork Borg.

So this came across my news feed, today:

I'm mildly interested. Haven't gotten around to trying out Mork Borg yet, but it's gotten enough sustained interest in the OSR-adjacent scene that it must have some good qualities. I'm not mega-invested in the Legacy of Kain series. I played Soul Reaver back on the PS1 and remember liking it. The original Legacy of Kain has been installed on my computer for like a year, but I haven't actually fired it up yet. The art for the books looks excellent, though, and Legacy of Kain's somewhat classier take on dark fantasy is more appealing to me than standard Mork Borg.

Unfortunately the usual Kickstarter fuckery is in evidence. All I want is print and pdf copies of both books, but there's no backer tier for that. There's no digital option for the Encyclopedia book at all.  $50 for what will probably be a pretty insubstantial rulebook and $63 for the lorebook, not including shipping and with books to be delivered sometime next year...maybe. Oh, and if you don't pay up in the next 30 days, you might never get another chance to buy these books. That's a pretty hard sell for me.

Planning: Too many things, and I should probably commit to one.

I wouldn't sweat it. I imagine that somebody will scan the book and put citations on the fandom wiki explaining all the new information it provides.

The LoK franchise is a good example of why lore dumps are overrated and unnecessary. Nosgoth's lore is quite frankly inferior compared even to a middling ttrpg setting. But the video games were successful anyway because they focused on good storytelling, characterization and gameplay. They did minimal worldbuilding, but just enough to suspend your disbelief.

What is the tabletop game even going to do? Nosgoth isn't a typical ttrpg setting. It has multiple known eras of history that are completely unrecognizable from each other, as well as time travel retcon shenanigans. What we know is so limited that the ttrpg writers are gonna have to write what is essentially fanfiction to make sense of things.

On the upside, this series has really cool vampires. I can easily see it crushing Vampire: The Whatever in competition.

I think I saw something in one of the articles about time travel rules, so maybe they're going to try and address that.

I tried to play Legacy of Kain once. I remember very little, aside from it not being readily apparent what I was actually supposed to do. Graphics and gameplay was a little janky as well. Early PS1 games were kind of hard to play.

I managed to get further into Soul Reaver. I remember mostly dull brown hallways. The whole dead and dying world concept might have sounded cool to writers, but it made for a pretty boring and repetitive game.

Legacy of Kain is one of the best video game series of all time, sans Blood Omen 2 which added nothing of substance. Other games are masterpieces.

Mork Borg on the other hand... imho, overblown hyped garbage.

So... thanks I guess, to whoever decided to mix the two. I'll probably just get the lore book, no interest whatsoever in their manifestation of a RPG. Literally could use any other existing system to better effect.

It's not fuckery, it's just Kickstarter. It's not a preorder platform, you're supporting someone's idea towards fruition.
