This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Yeah yeah I know he tries to backpedal and downplay this hit piece.

But the moral busybodies drag this out as "proof" Gygax was a "Nazi!!!" that even lesser fuckups like this just make me reach for the unsubscribe and block buttons and never look back. Virtue Signal to the vultures.

Slambo

His comment section, from what i saw, got why Hitler was mentioned at least. Its probably overrun by now

Zenoguy3

Unsubed. It should have been telling that the character I relate to most in his skits was the grognard caricature.

BoxCrayonTales

I thought it was funny how Gygax said that Caesar, Napoleon and Hitler were all hideously ugly and only made up for it with personal magnetism and persuasiveness.

Yeah that was at least refreshing to see.

uh, No Gygax did not.

QuoteCharisma: Many persons have the sad misconception that charisma is
merely physical attractiveness. This error is obvious to any person who
considers the subject with perceptiveness. Charisma is a combination of
physical appearance, persuasiveness, and personal magnetism. True
charisma becomes evident when one considers such historic examples of
Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Adolf Hitler. Obviously, these
individuals did not have an 18 score on physical beauty,
so it is quite
possible to assume that scores over 18 are possible, for any one of the
named historical personalities would have had a higher charisma score -
there can be no question that these individuals were 18's - if they would
have had great attractiveness as well as commanding personal magnetism
and superb persuasiveness.

aheh. Before this little mess he did a long running series of shorts on mostly D&D spells, animated, and some campaign logs among other things. I like his art and appreciate the sheer amount of work he has put in. Also he orates well which is a must really.

Up till this I would have pegged him as mostly neutral in the SJW vs sane people side of things.

Ombre29

That leaves me completely speechless...

This is wild.  Hitler is the archetypal charismatic leader.  I'd be willing to bet when charismatic leadership gets taught in Sociology 101 classes, Hitler is the most commonly cited example.  In fact, Max Weber's theory of charismatic leadership was arguably translated into English after the war to help explain Hitler.

Zee Bashew?

Nope, never heard of her... ;)
1. I'm a married homeowner with a career and kids. I won life. You can't insult me.

2. I've been deployed to Iraq, so your tough guy act is boring.

Venka

Yea pretending that Hitler is a weird or offputting choice for this just marks him as a dumb bitch, or worse, preening for social acceptance whilst knowing full well that all three are solid historical examples of charisma.

Ruprecht

The video takes the thing out of context and comes off as rather forced and stupid.

Gygax saw everyone using CHA as a beauty stat and it drove him nuts when it was intended to be a Leadership stat. eventually lead to Comliness which also didn't move the needle much. So he made the point using three of the most famous leaders in history (one of whom clearly was not beautiful). And if the video guy doesn't think Hitler was charismatic how else can he explain how he convinced Germany to go all in and follow his crazy plans?
