That's one of the options listed in the book, in fact, and one that I rather like as I have some players who like rolling more than one die. Plus, as I point out it means that I won't be rolling any dice so their fate is entirely in their hands.

I haven't played it but I do own it. I've been working with dice probabilities lately so when I saw the numbers for the ranges, I knew what I was looking at. I think the first time I saw this was in Starblazer Adventures.

Which amuses me, because in other games that roll 2D6 you may as well subtract 7 from everything and roll D6-D6.
I pretended that a picture of a toddler was representative of the Muslim Migrant population to Europe and then lied about a Private Message I sent to Pundit when I was admonished for it.  (Edited by Admin)

The mechanic itself was used in Feng Shui (1995/96) which itself was lifted from the relatively obscure Nexus: The Infinite City rpg (c.1994).

As a mechanic it reduces complexity in the application of contested rolls. The basic mechanic in Icons is really: Acting Ability + D6 vs Opposing Ability + d6 = Outcome.

When there isn't an 'Opposing Ability' the core roll remains contested by the difficulty of the task + D6. As such, it's really just a shorthand to describe it as D6-D6.

If you were to take the representation of 2D6 instead, you get less of a conjunction between uncontested and contested tasks, and then have to work out when you have to add or subtract 7 from any given roll. This method is, therefore, more complex. It is also, incidentally, a lot more simple than the core mechanic used in Champions: Attacker’s OCV + 11 - 3d6 = the DCV the attacker can hit

Is that in the Assembled Edition?  I didn't see that, I'm having an issue finding it.  If you have a page number, could you point it out?  I'm about to run another game for some friends as a one shot.  I may have been doing it wrong.

The base mechanic in AE is that the player and GM each roll a single d6, but there are several (mechanically similar) options listed on page 172 under "Dice Options." Personally I like all but the High Drop method, though Lucky 7 is typically what I use.

If you can find the original ICONS very cheap, then you might as well go with it. It's a perfectly fine game. I ran a game for years with it.

But if you're talking equal price, I guess you might as well go with the edition with some extra stuff in it.
