This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Zevious Zoquis;991236So the friend I mentioned earlier who found the pristine copy of Dawn Patrol at a garage sale for a buck just sent me a picture of something he found today at another garage sale...a pristine copy of Top Secret - complete with unused white crayon and unmarked red dice.  He bought a scooter for his little girl and the guy threw the game in free.  I now hate him.

Lol...

If it makes you feel better, I hate him too.

Quote from: K Peterson;991259Not sure if it was my best acquisition, but a few years ago I found a bundle of 9 Traveller LBBs for $10 at Half Price Books. Shrink-wrapped together in Fair to Great shape.
1977 LBB1-3, High Guard, Horde, Animal Encounters, Citizens of the Imperium, Forms and Charts, Veterans.

That's a great bargain. I wish there was a Half Price Books in my area. I'm always reading about steals there. Online they are no bargain at all.

Recently picked up Shadowrun's Bug City in a lot of old RPGs on Ebay. Got the whole lot of 7 books for $21, which is less than half what Bug City  usually goes for just by itself. That is one cool book of horror bugs!

Danish version of the Mentzer red box found in a thrift store for around 3$, great shape, with original dice and a Grenadier-mini thrown in for good measure. Now if only the Blue, also translated, Expert Set would turn up some place similar...
Running: Call of Cthulhu
Playing: Mainly boardgames

There's a couple I recall. One of them was at Goodwill, I found the Basic/Expert (the pre-Mentzer one) which turned out to have several old-school modules in them too. I think it cost about $5 canadian.

My best would be a battered box set of Starter Traveller for £2.

Just remembered another one.

Found a Ravenloft: Realm of Terror box for sale at a convention. The price of 15$ seemed a bit high... until I opened it and saw that the box contained both the original Ravenloft AD&D Module (I6) and Ravenloft II: The House on Gryphon Hill (I10). So that was bought instantly.

I picked up a bunch of OD&D/AD&D/AD&D 2nd edition books and modules and mini's at an auction for 34 bucks.

Excellent. Beats mine; I had to pay $7 for the one I found about 2 or 3 years ago.

I've yet to strike gold with this mythical unicorn that is a second hand sale!

Come to San Diego and visit Empire Games by Clairemont Mesa Blvd. In the backroom where you have to slip betwixt bearded fat guys in cheap chairs playing miniatures war games, they have a good shelf of used games. Not as cheap as you might find at a garage sale but now and then there is a real gem for the price of paste.

I hunt bargains as a hobby. I find a lot of cool things. But for every cool thing, there are a dozen trips where I find nothing. Perseverance is key.

Any relation to the Empire Games in Pasadena?

Yeah there are some game stores where I live where you'll get a semi-ok deal but nothing like walking out of a garage sale with a wood grain od&d box for 50 cents ;)

No idea. I would doubt it since the name is backed. I imagine maybe Game Empire is a local chain or franchise as there is (or was--I hardly ever go to game stores as I really have more than I'll ever need already) another Game Empire in Old Town San Diego as well. Personally that location underwhelmed me: a lot of D&D-type stuff but not much else, and not much for me as I don't do D&D.
