This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I am going to be running a Ninjas & Superspies one-shot that takes place in 2019.   N&SS is all about martial arts, high tech espionage and illuminati style world conspiracies and diabolical secret societies.   So its James Bond meets badly dubbed Kung Fu movies!

Let's imagine its a few years past 2019.

What do you remember from that year?

What has the hot new technology?

What were the big world events?

What great crisis happened that year?

What weird thing happened that year?

Okay let's see.

2019... we've had 10 years of no growth and massive unemployment. Those that are actually working are paying 70% of earnings in taxes. Oh yeah, official retirement age is now 85.
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It\'s simple, it\'s free and it\'s in colour!

I remember the first xCereJak - the old models that required a licensed physician for installation and only the rich could afford them...

Then CentraComm came out with that self-installed version for 3,999 and that was it, everyone had one.

To the dismay of people all over the planet, 2019 marked the advent of the first nuclear exchange between Pakistan and India.  Massive death totals, radioactive fallout, and general chaos rule in both countries (but Pakistan, especially--as it's smaller in area).  A terrorist-led nuclear attack on Israel at virtually the same time as the conflagration in Pakistan/India was shot down by American satellites with particle beam weapons.  Israelis and Palestinians take to the streets in some of the most vicious fighting of the year.  These events, among others, make the Unite Nations much less effective in its peace-keeping role.

{I'm sorry.  Too depressing maybe. :(

Maybe there's a device which combines speech recognition software & babelfish, which can translate speech in real time - but it doesn't synch up with lip movements, so...

Remember how...

  • ...Michael Jackson had himself cryogenically frozen and nobody cared?
  • ...KFC sued McDonalds over their new "Colonel McChicken" character?
  • ...Mexico broke out in civil war after the government declared martial law during the water shortage?
  • ...the IRS came down on The Church Of Scientology for tax evasion, and all those actors and lawyers flipped out, calling 'persecution' and 'witch-hunt'--but then it turned out that they HAD been dodging the tax-man, and a bunch of 'em went to jail?
  • ...those people in that town in Kentucky claimed to have 'suffered mass hallucinations' after drinking Red Bull...and they all hallucinated the exact same thing?
  • ...the Biggest Loser movie won an Oscar?
