This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Likewise.  4d6, drop lowest isn't exactly brain surgery.  There's also a simple xp -> level progression, but I can never be arsed to remember it because I have the handy-dandy table.

If I remember correctly, it's your current level, times 1,000 needed to reach the next level.  But I maybe misremembering.

I think it's that, added to your previous level's xp.  So 1,000 to reach 2nd, 3,000 to reach 3rd, 6,000 to reach 4th, and so on.

But see?  It's really a simple formula, but nobody can remember because there's this table...  ;)

Anyway, back to the thread.

The ZeFRS project that's reviving TSR's old Conan system is excellent. I've recently rediscovered the system through this and am excited about their proposed developments.

I gotta say SoTC/FATE 3.0. For what it is doing, it's really fucking cool. I wouldn't use it for, say, Jovian Chronicles, or Heavy Gear, or Blue Planet. But I'm adapting Tribe 8 to it and I have to say that I think serves the setting very, very well.

Quote from: RedFoxIt's technically not complete.  You cannot generate characters or advance them without house rules or purchasing the PHB.

Y'know, since I'd invariably have to add skill lists to FUDGE, I could say that about it, too.

But I wasn't thinking in that vein. I was thinking the even less complete Zothique D20.

Or FATE.

Another vote for Jags, particularly the Wonderland stuff.

Dr Rotwang!

I've seen a lot of free RPGs that kick the llama's ass, but for sheer thump-thump-thumpitty zero-em-gee-one-less-than-three full-on RPG geek swoon, I'm walking on the beach at sunset hand-in-hand with Encounter Critical.

FATE, though it didn't run quite as well for me in real life as I thought it would :)

I was having trouble telling if this thread was the same one that I posted to last week.  It's not, so I'll reiterate my choice for best free game:

   NEMESIS

That would be followed by FUDGE, which I've never actually played, but thought it was really, really neat.

I'd go Risus for a generic simple chargen/resolution system. If it was a question of what's given me the best experiences I'd have to say Nicotine Girls.

Quote from: JamesVFuzion then Risus.

The rules for Fuzion seemed to "broken" for me.   Action! seemd to fix some of the problems but even Action! had it's weaknesses.

Danger

I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

Balbinus

Either Zenobia or Warlords of Alexandria, both of which I think are of professional quality and put most published games to shame.

And, incidentally, there are a fair few free rpgs that put the published stuff to shame.

Edit:  I host them for the author at //www.balbinus.com
