This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I think I'd rather play in a world that lost the war, but with an active rebellion and an alien force whose initial landing was ill-equipped to contain the territory it conquered.  The rebellion actively trying to throw off the yoke of the oppressors (who are extremely effective against concentrated action, but not so effective against guerilla efforts).  The oppressors desperately trying to hold the ground until reinforcements can arrive.

Toss in some interesting cultural elements for the aliens so they are more than just "mindless invaders," like an agenda of events, specific goals to achieve and some actual reasons behind their actions.

And definitely take away the Deus ex Machina that they all suddenly die from microbes...

Western & Alien Invaders:
You are a member of the Pinkertons, the only group that knows about and can stop "Them." "They" are a group of beings from outer space that can assume the appearance of humans and are trying to take over the planet by replacing powerful people with themselves. All you have is wit, cunning, and a few stolen technologies to stop them.

That's a good one, but I'll raise you: Illuminati + Mech.

More detail?

How exactly would you pull this off?  Only the members of the highly secret order would have mechs?

...wouldn't they become very much "un-secret" the first time you saw a mech?

"Ayup, I saw the mech head over toward ole Banker Johnson's place and the rumbling of the earth stopped about the time it reached his barn.  I've always thought he was a member of that elite and super secret group, now I know!"

Maybe I'm not understanding how you're tying the Illuminati in with the mechs?  :)

Now...

Ninjas and the Illuminati could work together...

Supers and the Illuminati could work together...

Pinky and the Brain and the Illuminati could work together...

I'm still not seeing mechs, though.

No, the opposite: everybody has mechs (sorta like Patlabor or, I guess, Gundam or Heavy Gear) and that's just the baseline for how things are done. Then on top of that, you layer full-bore secret societies, cabals, ritualistic orgies, fnords, etc.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say "biopunk" or "psychopunk".

It's a world where synthetics and biological studies advanced faster than industrial technology. The problems of hunger/land utilization are solved by enormous tunnels filled with fungus cultures on the walls and/or in vats. Early on (maybe even before the study of genetics) humans discover "mutagens" and the ability to create and breed new species. Later they learn to enhance their own physical form.

Psychopunk would follow a similar model, but advanced religious mysticism awakens latent psionic function.

Eh? Eh?

Genre two would be a reality tv-show.

You ever read Khromosome Beejazz?

Genetic Engineering biopunk.

Underground had that in part (more punk/rebel with parodic elements of then modern society similar in spirit to Marshal Law)

Manga?
Game?

Game put out by TSR--used the Amazing Engine system Khromosome was kind of a neat take but the AE system wasn't very useable for most people. I see signs of what would later become Alternity in its frame but vague and distant.

I liked the setting for Khromosome--genetic engineering made people more prone to immunity issues--like pollution, guess what there was a lot of?

Underground was an RPG put out by Mayfair--using a very variant form of their MEGS engine (found in DC Heroes) and the most game within a game PC creation ever--you start by treating your PC from the planning stage as if you are the recruitor who arranges their re-engineering surgeon, rehabilitation psychiatrist and so on from the process.

Sweet...

But back on topic:
Anachronistic French Fantasy (royalist/catholic paladins brought forward into French revolution).

Mix it with... whatever genre FLCL (anime) is. Just that over-the top absurd uber-cool semi-comedy dadaist shiz.

I recall his as a polyhedron d20 game. Brushfire wars fought by
Moreau types. Had some unfortunate "dog soldier" remarks and
the Russians fielded bearmen. I did have a chuckle at the concept
of a rat-man pointman.

Mr. Analytical

X = Surrealism
Y = Noir
XY = Fishpunk - The characters live in the ruins of a city where a runaway scientific experiment caused a disruption in the probabilistic nature of reality at a quantum level.  Suddenly the likelyhood of a giant egg appearing in the middle of the street out of nowhere went from one in countless billions to one in a few hundred thousands.

X = Gonzo pornography
Y = Horror
XY = Bangbus Vs. The Undead - The characters play a porn crew who drive around the country filming willing "amateurs" shagging in their VW Camper.  However, every new town they visit also brings supernatural encounters as the team have to battle the undead and monsters.
