This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

WoTC is in the T-Shirt Business, but Also the Virtue Signal Business

So, here's my latest video, about the mostly non-controversy confabulated into some kind of fake 'controversy' by the usual suspects, regarding WoTC producing a new LGBT-rainbow T-shirt:

NOTE: this is not a thread where larger political discussion will be allowed. Any discussion must be kept STRICTLY ON TOPIC to the subject of the gaming hobby, not broader discussion of politics.

I was expecting a lot worse. I didn't even notice it was a "LGBT" shirt til it was pointed out to me.
Battle doesn\'t need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don\'t ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don\'t ask why I fight.

It is a non issue that shirt is part of Wizard's charity work and supports the Lambert House in Seattle.

Wizards has a lot of charity work going on with the corporation

The virtue signaling in this case is the one corporations all over the world use to show they are not cold hearted money grubbing machines that many folks have of them.

Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

If you cannot discern between charity and money-grubbing, insipid marketing (which you are doing by featuring your rpg in every video), you must indeed be a bigger fool than we realized.

You are virtue signaling your own product to a specific market: towards people who bristle at anything perceived as SJW. The irony is palpable.

I want a D&D T-shirt celebrating that I got married in the Church.
Every time I think the Forgotten Realms can\'t be a dumber setting, I get proven to be an unimaginative idiot.

Not eligible for that one, alas. Can I get one for my Ph.D. in Catholic theology? :)

"I'm running out of things to be outraged about. Oh look, Wizards has T-shirts." squinting intensifies, "One one of them is LGBT+! Rage mode engaged!"
"Anyways, I for one never felt like it had a worse \'yiff factor\' than any other system." -- RPGPundit

I think this is a "miss" on your part, Pundit.  If LGBT people want a t-shirt to show their "D&D Pride", more power to them.  Can't see how this affects anything at all.

Batman

"Wizards of the Coast isn't in the business of selling t-shirts"

- 'looks at my Izzet League shirt for Ravnica: City of Guilds of Magic: the Gathering'  Yeah they are, lol.

So it all boils down to some people who've been saying there's backlash about this t-shirt but because you have people "on the other side" not say anything....it's a pile of BS? K......

Fucking kids, playing their d&d with t-shirts all over their torsos, torsos with t-shirts on them that might not have played d&d, fucking wizards, signalling virtues, fucking cotton, woven into fabric, stretched and dyed, laser printing, wash with similar colours, make a video, pipe, crack pipe, whoooosh.

The thing about whipping up a moral storm amongst the intellectually disabled is that they have to be intellectually disabled for it to work. I'm not sure we're the right crowd for this particular piece of altish-agit-plop.

Gaming has a long history of popularity in the LGBT community. I saw "Chaotic Gay" t-shirts ages before WotC jumped on the SJW train.

Obviously, the Lambert House charity was chosen for virtue signalling, but it looks like a solid charity that's been around decades. If it helps some kids, that's good. Especially a charity that gives teens a space to be teens and do fun stuff. I'm no fan of boy scouts or church teen groups, but I do know they provide a valuable space for many teens, even if they didn't provide me anything of value.

I'm confused where there is any controversy. Controversy would mean something incongruous occurred. Does anyone not expect WotC to virtue signal at every opportunity?

If any conservatives haven't noticed yet, WotC doesn't want you as fans, but they will accept your money. That's been written in stone for years now. YOU ARE NOT WANTED BY WOTC, BUT SEND YOUR CASH. The only question for any conservatives is whether you vote with your dollars or not. It's not like WotC holds the keys to RPG gaming, or even D&D anymore. If you give WotC money, you know what you are supporting - and you've known it for years.
