This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Why are we paying attention to WotC at all?

That's like asking why non-Americans follow U.S. politics. Like it or not, WotC's decisions and antics affect the hobby, micro or macro scale. Not to mention all the people that can't cut the umbilical on zombie wearing the face of a product they once loved.
Sadly correct. For now, WotC's behavior is definitely an influence.

Of course, at the rate they're pissing themselves, that may change. Knock on wood.

If only any of the likely successors weren't just as crazy and stupid...

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

Oh I'm sorry  :o Should I move it to another forum? I thought it would be an interesting discussion on the latest D&D release.
Ignore the retards. If Pundit or Brett have a problem, they'll let you know directly.

Kind of unsurprising though. While there's an argument that NPCs should not outshine PCs, at the same time there needs to be some risk. Without risk, where is the glory?

One thing about The Fantasy Trip: it is no D&D.  It is DEADLY.  Don't get too emotionally attached to your P-C.

Actually, a good idea with any TTRPG.

Which raises an unrelated question: at what point does it stop being a roleplaying game and start being a tactical encounter game?

I mean, I wouldn't get emotionally attached to my units in a tabletop wargame. But asking me to pour some thought into my PC, only to have it killed off in the second session? Nah brah, I'll find another game.

Lethality should probably be inversely proportional to the complexity of character generation.

Hell, forget tactical encounter game, with all the talk of the VTT and all its going to do when does it become a video game and stop being a role playing game?

In the computer industry in the 1980s we had a saying, "No one gets fired for buying IBM" meaning that if you needed computers and bought IBM mainframes you'd be okay.  IBM is still around, they still do computer stuff, but they are not the driving force in the industry anymore.

They lost their gorilla status because smaller and more agile companies started producing things that users wanted and got the job done better than big iron.  My hope is that as TTRPG  moves into a more mainstream entertainment activity that those smaller companies will pull the motive power away from WotC and disperse it out into a larger marketplace.

That's a very good point.  IBM sold their laptop/desktop division to Lenovo and now are a slimmer leaner company.   Hopefully as you said companies will come along and take away some of their power in the market.

I mean, look at the damage Paizo did when they released Pathfinder.  They at one point I believe surpassed D&D and pushed it to the number two spot for a bit.

I wonder how much of the market Paizo has between Pathfinder and Starfinder.  They have major product lines in both Fantasy and Sci-fi.  I don't think Hasbro could resurrect a Sci-Fi line from the TSR days.  There are too many smaller companies that make popular products for a new 5e Gamma World or 5e Star Frontiers to gain much traction.  Even if it has Hasbro's backing.

I looked and they took back Star Frontiers so you can no longer get it for free on that site.  They are selling it on Drive Thru RPG now (especially the core book as an all in one book).
