This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hmm, PCs painting names on their loot cart... What's the equivalent of hyperspace travel? ;)

No, from the get-go, not just for higher levels. Hmm, it has a huge inland sea. So get them a cheap ship and place the dungeons conveniently close to the coast...

Yeah in some ways it is, the thing is very adaptable and just full of inspiration, been using since it came out, two different campaigns, one in the Altanis map (wandering exiles from the city state, very cut throat Sergio Leone like campaign, an idea I stole from Melan) and one in the Citystate map sans the citystate itself, (second generation game where the players are the off spring of their characters from my previous campaign, a much more heroic game), in two different systems, HARP and 3.5 respectively and we've had a blast in both.

The Wilderlands also are perfect for Iron Heroes. Or Conan.

They´re also perfect for 3.5.
Actually, it´s an environment to make your 3.5 shine very brightly. You are not forced to take optimal character builds, you are free to roam and wander and build a character at the pace and of the colour you like.
That goes double for skillpoint allotment.

What is also very easy and fun to do, is to connect feats and prestige classes and maneuvres to discreet points on the map.

For example there´s a tower with monks in it. You best them, you learn new stuff.

Like in the days of old, where your character was defined by where, how and which magic items he found, your character can now become to be defined by his feats and prestige classes.
usually you get this stuff off screen, with the Wilderlands you can add this new dimensions very easily.

For the Wilderlands style Sett is suggesting, I'd strongly recommend the variant rule in Unearthed Arcana about "test-based prerequisites". This takes some of the stupid character planning aspect out of the game. With a little good thinking and help from other players, in additon to some decent role-playing with prospective mentors and groups, players can join whatever prestige class they encounter and take more feats without actually going through tedious feat chains that allow for no spontaneous customisation.

And while we're at it: Ditch the XP penalty for multi-classing.
