Why people hate D&D/d20

Ok. Sorry... I get it. I have an emotionaly weak point, reading about Gary Gygax and than reading those things at the same time... it just send me to mild depression...

I've seen many cases where it's garden variety insecurity, with people trying to justify purely personal tastes with hyperbole, slurs and attacks. They lack the confidence to express their preferences without calling on some external circumstance or authority. The internet-- lacking as it does the nuances of face-to-face interaction --is awash with this sort of shit.

I hate d20 'cause it made my children be born naked and it makes my poop smelly.

Next question!
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

I don't "hate" D&D or d20 (and to me they may overlap at times, but they are not the same thing)

Its just not my favorite system or the one that I'm most comfortable.

If my friend , Cindy, asked me to sit in as a player with her D&D group - I would. Not because I likle D&D , but because she is a friend and good company. Both she and I prefer GURPS - but she is stuck in Athens, Ohio with a bunch of D&D/d20 players.

Also....this question feels weird to post today of all days considering who died earlier.

The only reason anyone would hate D&D/d20 is because they have severe emotional issues. Dislike it? Sure. Can't stand to play it? Yep. But actually hate a game? Ludicrous.

Good point. This applies to all games, IMO.

I think much of it has come from that mis-spelt rant

I've gone over this before, it's the same reason people hate operating systems or programming languages: the networking effect. Fans of X hate that option Y exists, because Y reduces the utility of X by the number of people who'd choose X if only Y wasn't around.

This applies whenever the utility of something is positively influenced by the number of other people who use/participate in that thing, and there are impediments to simultaneously using/participating in more than one thing in the class that's being compared.

Quote from: MorteOTOH Star Wars Saga Edition did its level best to stop me enjoying a Star Wars campaign, because it set out to be "D&D in the Star Wars Universe" rather than working like the Star Wars movies. But it's a great big license, so there's really only one company that's going to get it, and you know what sort of game you'll get from them.

I couldn't disagree more.  The first two versions of d20 Star Wars felt like D&D Space, but Saga is a different animal.  It is quite a bit different from D&D in most respects.  Very fast playing.  Very cinematic.  Very true to the source material.  The Force rules are almost right on.  It runs like a Star Wars movie should run.

I'm assuming he's talking about the d6 version being the non-D&D in space here. The original d20 SW were most definitely D&D in space. I haven't played SAGA, but I like some of the stuff I heard about it.

Boy it's like I've been paged or something.

Because D&D in no way deserves its place in the hobby.  Not for the design which is pedestrian at best and downright nonsensical at worst.  Not for the way TSR and WotC have treated their players (unless you're really into being constantly shat upon by people who actually disdain you).  Not for the business management and marketing which have only served to pigeon hole the whole hobby in the minds of the public.  Not for the excellent quality of the fans because D&D's rabid fans suck as much as every other games only there's so many more of them.

But most of all, because no matter how I want to like it it always disappoints me and leaves a terrible taste in my mouth.  I think if Gary had managed to write second edition a good game might have emerged, but if management had dictated aspects of the game to him as they did with first edition I doubt it.

Obviously :D

None the less as a die hard on-line (if over the top and tongue in cheek) D&D hater that is my most basic complaint.

I don't hate D&D.  It just bores me so I don't play it.  I don't say anything negative about the game nor do I tell people not to play it.  If it's your thing, great.  It's not my thing.

Same with D20.  It's a Mediocore system but I understand some people like it and play it.   I don't and I won't, however play it and I don't hate it.

GrimJesta

I'd like to add to my previous statement:

"Because there's dozens upon dozens of better systems out there and D&D 3.x+ sucks compared to them."
