This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Why ISN'T D&D the Most Successful RPG in the World?

Fuck me!  Why do I even bother trying to put forward a reasoned, rational argument if you are just going to paraphrase it (and in a misleading manner, no less).

I'm out.

Maybe it's because as much as you want to tart it up with pointless verbiage, it's still the same crap we've heard over and over again, and we were already sick of it the first time?

Since you're fond of shit metaphors, how about this one:  You can bread a turd, drown it in Hollandaise, and put it on a bed of imported black rice, and it's still a fucking turd.

In addition to being a wonderful description of your post, it also ties wonderfully into D&D itself:  If the game is shit, and half it's players are miserable, external factors are only going to go so far.

D&D sucked my cock pretty well when I let her, but she didn't swallow. So I dumped her.

D&D isn't the most successful RPG in the world not because she doesn't swallow.

Because....ya know...for me, she does. For starters.

And that's why, Black Flag, I said in a subsequent post, that I got more of the vibe you give off in this last one than the vibe walkerp is laying down.  I still think it cuts a little close to the "players of D&D are not happy, they just keep playing for reason X" arguement that J illustrates is as tiresome as they come.

Just remember TF, this is a hobby, not work.  So those two factors are going to be on short leashes. Don't have fun? Done. Don't like the rule? Done. Don't like the Catpissmen at the Con? Done. People aren't locked in cause of health insurance or car payments or rent - they are playing a game they could leave with little effort at any time. So the workplace analogy kinda falls to the wayside.

*shrug* I'm just your average ordinary male "games should be played like pussy eaten"* gamer.

*something (more or less) what American Badass (I think) said on tBP which really stuck with me

Well, I thought what you said made sense. Well, the "two factor" part - "Motivators" and "Hygiene Factors" - made sense, the "D&D is a steaming pile of shit", not so much. Don't mind the resident BNG. We just keep him in case Forgers visit, so they won't feel too lonely.

Me? She just did it, no coaxing whatsoever...

But if you have to beat your women to get them to, it might explain your view on others that don't...

God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

Don't go, TF. At least, not from this site.

walkerp's clearly going through some kind of gamer crisis and I wish him the best even though he's been kind of a passive-aggressive freakazoid since he popped in here.

For the record, I agree with Black Flag, TF, and JimBob.

Let's clear out some semantic underbrush: why is D&D the most popular, most played RPG in the world?

Answer: because of multiple factors. You can't "prove" or even seriously argue that any factor is insignificant simply because it fails to fully explain D&D's popularity. Nor does asserting the significance of any one factor "prove" the insignificance of the others.
