Title: "Why Greyhawk?" in 2023 - grodog's Thoughts
Post by: grodog on January 08, 2023, 03:24:57 PM
"Why Greyhawk?" and why I think that Greyhawk is still as relevant in 2023 as it was in 1973: https://grodog.blogspot.com/2023/01/why-greyhawk-in-2023.html

Do it! For the first time I am planning a game in Karameikos rather than Greyhawk.

If the OGL1.1 is released as leaked, the idea of doing anything with any property under WotC's iron fist should probably be considered ill-advised. As written, you'd need to sign up for a 1.1 just to legally blog about their content.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens with fan sites/blogs. Back in the late TSR era I ran afoul of their web policy for something or other and got a rather nasty email from their online person, Sean what's this name (who later went on to be a designer)

The old OGL made it pretty clear that it wasn't for fan purposes, but for publishing and they pretty much let fan sites do what they want, since it's obvious they were non-commercial.

The new OGL now seems to blur the lines. Which is actually something Paizo did with Pathfinder 2e, instead of releasing a proper SRD, like they did with 1.0, they had a fan site that combined non-open content with fan material.

I like Greyhawk a lot. I like Known World. I like Kalamar. There are published settings I like. There are even modern settings I like... I liked Midnight, for example. Non-D&D settings, too... I love the Old World, I love Harn.

And then there's ones I don't.

But the point is, there's tons of old settings that I love so much that I wish weren't half-forgotten relics, that I really wish got more publicity and love than they do.

I fell in love with Greyhawk after playing the video game version of Temple of Elemental Evil. It's a great setting. I will admit I've gravitated more towards Mystara in recent years due to using a lot of material from it for my B/X campaigns. But Greyhawk is still awesome.
