I'm looking to run some Judge Dredd. I have distant memories of using the Games Workshop Judge Dredd roleplaying game from back in my university days.
I notice that since then there have been three further Judge Dredd games: - one based on d20, one based on Traveller and the current one based on WOIN.
Does anyone have any experience of any of theses systems? Would you recommend any over the others?
The Mongoose Publishing Traveller Judge Dredd isn't great. It's not abysmal either, but it stays too close to the Traveller side rather than embracing a full conversion. And I'm a big fan of Mongoose Traveller core played straight, and a Dredd Trav could have worked, but should have worried less about compatibility and done more of its own thing.
I don't know any of the others to compare, unfortunately.
Yeah, the Mongoose one is good, but nothing special. And it does feel like JD has been shoehorned intro the system.
I've not read the woin version like op, I'm afraid.
I've played Judge Dredd settings using Mongoose Traveller. Never used the actual Judge Dredd rulebook from Mongoose though.
The Judge Dredd and the Worlds of 2000 AD rpg, the WOIN one, is actually pretty solid. The writers have access to the entire 2000 AD catalog of art and comic books to work with. And the book is fun to read.
The system is similar to the WEG d6 system in how it plays. Character building is kind of a Lifepath system, but its really just a series of occupational choices that adds to your characters stats and skill ratings.
One more neat thing is JD & TWo2000AD is a core rulebook for the rest of the 2000 AD world books.
The only bugaboo to some people is its published by EnWorld.

Is WOIN one of those systems where only the players roll dice?

Every time I took it off the shelf, my mind's eye would see Umbran's skeevy lawyer avatar glaring at me as he made some pompous put-down... ;D

It's a very traditional system where everybody gets to roll dice so all get to enjoy shooting law givers and other inferior and banned gun products. ;)
One of the other things I can say that is really cool about this version of Judge Dredd is that the game is designed around the players being able to play not just Judges but normies, criminals, and illegal mutants of the Cursed Earth so if you want to play it as a straight up Post-Apocalyptic game in the Cursed Earth, you can.
