Which game has the most interesting Paladin?

Thor's Nads

Paladin. Warriors of Charlemagne.

This game is intensely and exhaustively researched, and is the best depiction of Paladins in an RPG. If history is your thing.

I have been meaning to pick this one up for a long time!

One of the first RPG books I got was the 2e AD&D Complete Paladin. There's some interesting stuff in that.

I guess whatever game 'defines' paladin for you.

For me, it's AD&D.

I haven't read the P:WoC book yet, but even so, I tend to think of "paladin" as a peer of Charlemagne. It's a concept that is wider than gaming. To Thorn's point -- I first encountered many things in AD&D, but its use of "paladin", "druid" and "monk" are pretty peculiar as noted in a recent thread.

Though, from television, I'd also like to see "paladin" as a gunslinger in the old west. :-)

Yeah, I really like the Companion version.  Really Companion created the first prestige classes.  I'd probably put the limit at fourth but that's largely a matter of how I view levels.  But basically why would the gods support a nobody who's not all that impressive.  That said, there should probably be a pious peasant kind of class too because the paladin is too closely tied to the trappings of knighthood and nobility.  That's one of those detail things.  I can totally see the evil god of the divine right of kings having paladins but I think the various other gods might have some other kind of champion.

Pious peasant class? Monk immediately comes to mind.

Right now the two games I like the most are Dungeons & Delvers Dice Pool, and Olde Swords Reign.

Why?  Well, I'll tell you, disembodied voice that may be a precursor to dementia.  Glad you asked.

They're both customizable.

Delvers is more traditional, but at character creation, and some levels give you pick your talents.  This way you can make your Paladin different than another Paladin. Mine might be all about two handed weapons and mystical powers.  Yours might be about racial abilities and one-handed weapons with a shield.

Olde Swords Reign is likewise able to be customized.  They don't even have a Paladin, just the fighter.  But, you can get Lay of Hands, and some single spells, or horsemanship feats to make your character as you want it.

Also, Olde Swords Reign is free to download.  Go see for yourself.

There are other games I like, but the next honorable mention would actually be Palladium Heroes Unlimited, the Magic Weapon hero.  I love the thought of being a secret knight with powers, and all I need to do is grab my sword, say the phrase, and wham, I'm a powerful knight.
I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

Olde Swords Reign looks like a good replacement for D&D 5e.  I need to run this at my table and see if my players would like it.

It is.  It's an OSR, but this one has 5E bits as it's selling point.  So, it's not just another B/X clone.  I like it because it's an all-in-one RPG even though it's only got four classes.  I love the game.

Other than that, the 5e vengeance paladin is cool.

Yes, that was one of the better ideas from 4th edition D&D, where it was called the Avenger. In fact, I'd argue the 4e version was better because it was sneakier, and gave off Batman vibes as a result.

Arcana Unearthed/Evolved's Champion class is I think a very good example, it's an umbrella class rather than specifically Paladiny, but it's geared to be very flavorful for whatever cause is being championed.

Wrath of God

I think considering general D&D like systems I always orbited towards either oathbound paladin (though 5e done it in most mediocre level) or divine champion paladin (especially since I always dreamed of de-martialised clerics) - with each deity at least major having own peculiar quirky champion form crafted to its domain, lore and creed.

I like the AD&D Paladin because I qualified for it on my first character roll ever for the ruleset. Made the class and character feel very special to me.
That's all there is to it, really.

Rolemaster Paladins have the spell Holy Martyr at level 50.  It allows them to explode in a righteous +50 fireball.  I do like the Rolemaster Paladin spell lists in general.  I love how RM generally rolls class abilities into a spell list that functions much the same as everyone else's spell lists.  They've essentially unified class abilities into a single uniform mechanic.

I had to look that up in the copy of RMSS Spell Law I acquired 4 years ago ... and it's a +100 Fire Ball with double concussion hits and a bonus Slaying critical. Sounds like just the thing when you absolutely have to take that dragon/Black Reaver/Ordainer Demon out with you. :D

I always liked how it was spelled "Palladin" in Palladium Fantasy. I used to assume it was a cheesy callout to the name of the game, but knowing Palladium, it could have been a straight-up spelling error. 😁
