This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Which CURRENTLY AVAILABLE D&D version do you prefer?

I voted True 20, since I consider "smaller rules set" to be siding with the lesser evil.

Brantai

True20, since it's the only one on the list I actually like.

Hackmaster, cause if you want 'rules light' games, go play TWERPS. :p

I mean jesus. It's a DUNGEON. You're supposed to walk in there like you own the place, busting down doors and pushing over sarcophagi lids and stuff. If anyone dares step up, you set off fireballs.

Quote from: James J SkachI'm unclear as to why OSRIC would be left off. Just because it's a "fudge" for OGL purposes doesn't mean it's not a currently available version of the game.

Because your average gamer is deeply unlikely to find it unless they're trawling around online forums and actively seeking that sort of thing. If a printed version does start popping up on gamestore shelves, that'll be different, but at the moment it's pretty much there to breach to the AD&D 1E converted.

Also, if I included OSRIC, I'd have to include every other freely downloadable D&D-knockoff sitting around on a website somewhere. :)
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Crossbow bolts are easier to remove than a .22, so I'll go get the crossbow.:p

You can buy OSRIC compatible adventures and supplements from places like RPGNow and some are available in printed form. (shrugs) Since it was designed as a cipher for AD&D1E IMO with this poll just vote AD&D1E if you prefer OSRIC. It's a restating (which in some cases is a Good Thing) of AD&D1E using the d20 SRD specifically to allow for the creation of new AD&D1E works that can be sold.

I voted C&C. Works out of the box, doesn't get in the way, and I can easily use bits from any D&D version with it. I can play most any version but won't run 3.x anymore without stripping it down so much it'd be easier to just start with C&C.

Honorary vote to Basic Fantasy. It is available in print as well as free PDF and redoes Basic D&D nicely while seperating race and class and reversing AC, my 2 gripes.

Quote from: el diablo roboticoBah. It's so easy to convert any 3.x stuff for C&C.

This is true. . . but since the "conversion" is a largely matter of ignoring 90% of the 3x mechanics and system info in such products, I'm paying roughly $40 each for books that I'll only use 10% of with C&C ;)

Purely from a price standpoint, this is a horrible deal. I get to use 100% of these products when I play the game they're actually designed to be used with and, for me, that's not only practical, but sensible, too.

I only buy used, not having a lot of money...but I have an extensive library of d20 stuff from the boom.  And really, a lot of what I've been buying lately is really cheap 1e and 2e stuff.

There are also quite a few free 3E adventures, especially on the WOTC website, that can be stripped and ran with most D&D incarnations.

If I hadn't had to part with nearly all of my AD&D1e/2e stuff last year, I'd probably be playing C&C right now. Converting this older material makes a lot of sense for me (i.e., converting stuff from editions of D&D that I can't find players for). That said. . . I sold most of my game collection last year.

Currently it simply makes more sense for me (both financially and where simple practicality is concerned) to buy into the world's most-played and best-supported game system. Converting this material for use with C&C  doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Add the fact that this conversion means I'm paying quite a bit of money for very little material that can/will actually be used in C&C (given the 3x crunch to fluff ratio) and the situation isn't only impractical, but financially unsound.

For me, this just doesn't work out. To each their own, of course.

Casey777 already pointed this out, but you can indeed buy OSRIC modules.

I would have considered Basic Fantasy Roleplay or whatever the analgous Basic D&D SRD thing is. I have a copy, but since I still have my D&D Cyclopedia I just ignore it.

My favorite game is D&D3.5. I had a bit of a conflict about 2nd place:

Here's where I buck ye olde trend.

* I like the Troll Lord guys a lot.

* I actually bought my copy of Castles and Crusades (PHB) at Gen Con from a guy with reddish hair, muttonchops and a moustache that I am almost 90% positive was Joe Wolz.

* OSRIC is just better. It's more open. Also It's free.
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

C&C all the way.  I gave up buying any D&D/WotC stuff a while back, cause it all just started looking like oWoD splat books.  Still expecting the art direction to lean even more towards anime at some point so i can no longer differentiate it from the Manga it sits next to in the local gettin' store.

old school. gotta love that. Lots of adventures. can easily use 3.5 or 1e & 2e stuff with it.
