This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Campaign Coins [forked from old-school thread]

Quote from: flyingmiceI'm not disputing that, Hellhound. The players obviously love it, though it leaves me indifferent. I just keep forgetting, and it staggers me afresh each time. :O

You should see what happens in LARPS. People can make some nice bucks catering to those players.

Damn that's cool I may do something like this for my next campaign.

So, in the game I ran this weekend, I had my first opportunity to use the Campaign Coins I've been clinking around since GenCon.

Here's a recap, crossposted from a thread I started on another forum about them.

- - -

So, Dex just opened up her box of Campaign Coins and...

WOW THEY ARE SEXY.

Each box has 120 coins in 4 metals (copper, gold, silver and platinum because no one but Diaglo uses electrum anymore) and 1, 10, 100 and 1000 denominations.

I thought they were cute at first, but after digging into Dex's leather pouch of coins, these things are awesome. A double set would be enough to handle most D&D campaigns (over 130,000 gp worth of coins).

So, in the game I ran last night, we tracked all wealth using these coins and now each player has a small pouch of coins in their dice bag.

They've been a huge hit at our table.

Just a random brain dropping. Those coins look awesome, but I'm on the poverty plan.

Some years ago, I was in an original play about the life of Shakespeare. The director wanted coins that jingled for one scene, but since we were in a tiny space, and the audience was right on top of us, US coins looked like... US coins. One fo the cast experimented, and using a sledge hammer, pounded the coins flat. He mostly used nickels, but I think he also tried a few pennies. They had a nice heft, jingled convincingly, didn't leave metallic paint on the costumes, and cost less than washers. It's a sad day when real money is cheaper than fake money.

Players do love shinies. I brough in some craft gems to mark some magical McGuffin, and my players were fascinated. Must've been crows in a former life...

I showed these to some of the guys from my gaming group, and they thought it was the coolest gaming accessory/prop they've ever seen.  It's up with Kayuda Maps as my Best Find of Gen Con.  I know they're pricey, but they're also just amazingly cool and well-done.

Hi, my name is Jim, and I'm a gamer.

When I was in Indy, we were doing the family thing - so we went to the childrens museum and the zoo.  Now, all over the place, they have these machines where you put in two quarters and a penny and crank this handle (turning big gears and looking neat to the kids).  It then spits out the penny, but flattened (wafer thin) and with a design on one face - a train, butterflies, dolphins. Tons of kids in both places were dragging their parents over to these machines and blowing $.50 a pop to get a flattened penny. And thing I thought of?

That would be cool to make coins for gaming...

Ooooh..there's an idea.  Get some that make the pennies into random "coins" and set them up all over Gencon next year....

Chocolate money is another cheap alternative, although they wouldn't last 5 minutes in my games. The characters would be on skid row and the players in a diabetic coma.

Good point, and since I use them all the time in my games to begin with...

I suppose so. The fellow had some rationale for the hammer technique, which I forget now. I keep imagining his coin flattening experiment derailing a train, and him being hauled off in chains to Gitmo, ranting, "You don't understand! It was for a play!"

Of course, if we derail a train, we must rant, "It was for a game!";)

Mardi-gras coins could be used as a cheaper alternative for those of us who live in the deep south (why didn't I think of this before?)
